Liveblog thread for 3DS new Nintendo IP announcement (Code Name STEAM)

Nintendo isn't having a roundtable for a Square-Enix game, makes no sense.

Great to see more games announced though.

Nintendo has published plenty of S-E games worldwide in the past, including the recent Bravely Default.

Still, I doubt that's what they're revealing tonight.

I know, they're still not having a roundtable for a game that isn't theirs though. Everything points to a proper Nintendo game announcement. Especially with heavy hints about Majora's Mask and a bunch of hints about Metroid.

... does it though? They left the 3DS to a sub-par Paper Mario game Holiday 2012, this is hardly anywhere near as bad.

That's a good point. Like I said, really just wishful thinking on my part. We'll know soon enough, though. (Also, I really liked Paper Mario: Sticker Star, but I know I am part of a minority in that on GAF.)

Now I'm convinced that there will be more than one game.

Because there is no way they'd spend an hour and a half to reveal a Final Fantasy spin off.

Cool. A 3DS Final Fantasy is something I want. More details will be great!

But I doubt it will the featured game at the event later. I would hear it first from Square Enix rather than Nintendo having a dedicated discussion for it.

What's your favourite from the series (Paper Mario, TTYD, Super Paper Mario)? I heard only bad things about SS, that's why I didn't buy it yet.

The announcement for the roundtable has always referred to "game," as in a single game, though. (I just don't want you to be disappointed!)

That's a tough question. I think TTYD > Paper Mario but I love both. I've only started playing SPM recently and am maybe halfway through that and really digging it. Sticker Star can be had these days for like $10. To me it's a must-buy at that price. I was pleased with it even as a full-priced game. It offers plenty of content, it's just--like SPM--a very different kind of Paper Mario game. Think of it this way, I guess: SPM has RPG elements of story and leveling up, but not turn-based battles. Sticker Star is the exact opposite: minimal story and RPG elements in terms of leveling up, but enjoyable turn-based battles. Coin and sticker collection takes the place of traditional leveling up. It's really quite a fun, charming and enjoyable ride of a game, and to me a fitting portable entry in the series. Great OST, too.

It's her own mask.

It's also her favorite game ever.

There's nothing more to that here, even if it is MM

Yeah it didn't come off as her doing promo work for Nintendo. It looks like she just wandered on stage with it lol.

That's not to discount the likeliness of MM3D coming. Nintendo knows we want it, they're just toying with us.

Imo, Majora's Mask remake wouldn't qualify as a big game. What would they even want to talk about for an hour? If it, however, was a remake with a Master Quest-like second quest, complete with new dungeons, then I'd be fine with calling it a big reveal. If it was just a straight 3DS-remake of Majora's Mask though, I'd be pissed. I'd hope for either a Collectathon, a new OoT / MM-style Zelda using the OoT engine or a Metroid Prime successor (not Hunters).

I don't know about that. I mean, look at how much work they put into promoting the Dragon Quest games in the US around the release of DQ9. This level of promotion could have been part of the deal for Square to develop it.

Also, Nintendo published Bravely Default here. Maybe they're publishing this.

As far as I'm concerned this is now the most likely candidate.

Didn't Wind Waker HD have an added master quest? I could see Nintendo doing the same for Majora's Mask 3DS.

Wind Waker had some stupid difficulty adjustments that just made hearts disappear and enemies dealing more demage. I was thinking of a proper Master Quest that doesn't destroy the balance of gameplay elements for an extra dosage of tedium. Including new dungeons.

Eh that was an established very successful mainline game, this is a spin off. Besides Nintendo's not exactly the begging position Bravely Default outsold LR first month in America.

SE has an incentive to make games for the 3DS without Nintendo having a major hand.

I guess? I'm not saying that it is definitely the secret game, I just think it's the most likely candidate given that it hasn't been shown at E3 up to this point and the Final Fantasy brand is still big enough to warrant a bit of attention.

If anything, I would say that this is a bit of a tweener. It's not quite a megaton, but it is of sufficient stature that it is a valid candidate, especially since it hasn't been shown anywhere else yet. The timing is just so suspicious.

Anyone notice that, aside from smash bros and this unnanounced game, Nintendo was pretty mum on 3DS titles?

Makes me think we'll hear about a new handheld as soon as next year. Total speculation though.

That's the issue all around. Majora's Mask would be a megaton for me and a lot of us, but why would they specifically do a roundtable for it?

we have been over this BD is the new FF

they just need to remove the repeat content in the sequel is all

until FF15 saves the series its dead to me

Guys, they're having developers talk about the game with journalists, in a Nintendo roundtable, announced by Nintendo. Yet you think we'll see SE developers talk about a FF game and Nintendo's involvement is only publishing?

I don't see this at all. Also I think Nintendo has never had E3 roundtables about third party stuff, could be wrong though.

For me it's Paper Mario > TTYD, but yeah, both are amazing, Super Paper Mario has a nice mechanic, but for me it was kind of a letdown (uninspired enemies, not much freedom, lackluster plot, felt detached from the Mario world canon). I already heard the minimal story stuff, and that's a major turn-off for me, are there enough secrets, hidden or optional things? By the way SS isn't $10 here, more like € 37,90 (Amazon, the nearest physical store is 1 hour away from me and only has new games anyway), which is around $51... :(

50% chance of Majora's Mask
15% chance of Metroid
20% chance of Advance Wars
15% chance of Fire Emblem

-10% chance of F-Zero *

* Percentages pulled out of my ass

I'd honestly say nah. Nintendo surely has some sort of major game in development for the 3DS in 2015 rather than some third party game. Doesn't make logical sense for it not to be unless the plan to drop major first party support for a while. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence for the handheld if your major game is a third party especially for the 3DS.

I think it's more that they focused all of their attention on getting the Wii U some positive press to try convince the world that it is still alive. Once the dust settles I'm sure we'll get more 3DS news.

Given the 3DSs install base, they aren't close to abandoning it. Smash is going to be a monster release. Persona Q should be a big seller (at least in Japan) and now we have the FF announcement. Smash is the big anchor title for the remainder of 2014, but I'm sure they will be announcing some additional titles to fill in around that.

IMO the roundtable game, if it isn't MM or FF, is going to be an anchor title for 2015.

Why do people even think it's going to be Metroid anyway? Is it because of Reggie's pin or was there something else? Because before the show I thought it was generally agreed this was going to be Majora's Mask.

I really hope it's Metroid =(

Really? Wow, that completely throws me off then. I had expected some degree of special importance given the length of the thing.

You saying MM isn't important?

Would take any Metroid game at this point, 3DS is a fantastic platform for if.

One question tho.
How does the hardware compare with the GameCube? Could we be seeing a Prime trilogy remake for 3DS? Or is the handheld not powerful enough to do it justice?

My dream scenario would be a 2D Metroid in the vain of fusion or Super Metroid but have a feeling it's a remake/update of some sort if anything

The dev rountable in 2011 was also focused on OoT.

These things are almost always about Zelda. It's going to be Zelda.

These things also never run the full time. It won't be 90 minutes

I love Majora's Mask and I'm still hoping the game isn't Majora's Mask. Please, no. I already own the game twice. I don't need to own it again. Give me something new or Mother 3.
