I've lived all over, having spent most of the second half of my life in asian countries where homelessness/vagrance/busking is, like, heavily controlled, it's always weird going back to places like spain, portugal, south america, where things like begging, pickpocketing, slum neighborhoods and just generally shady places are still very real; it feels like you're stepping back into the 90s... it's really weird to have to watch your wallet...
slight aside...buenos aires stunk of pee because the corrupt government doesn't spend anything on street cleaning, really weird to walk among incredibly expensive 1920s-era art nouveau apartment blocks that make western europe look poor while you're slipping on years-old garbage bag grime spots and smelling urine on every doorstep
I've been a few places where it really does makes you wonder how something so beautiful could be be forgtotten. It's saddening. Poland, Czech Rep is better. The further you go west ...
I'm not insulting the locals they at still amazing but the ones i've seen looked all forgotten about which was such a shame.
