Pretty stupid.

It seems like you can walk into most stores, even now, and get a PSP with no pre-order or anything.

My local Best Buy has "tons" according to the lady when I called about 30 minutes ago.

Apparently you didn't remember the Japan launch where people paid 900 dollars for a PSP off ebay - and that was just the most. People easily paid 400-500 dollars for a PSP back then.
