Look, I hate EA as much as the next guy but...

after watching some of theGodfather gameplay videos, i am in complete awe.

I was not nessecarily blown away because of the graphics, but the animation of the characters kind of freaked me out.

Is it just me, or does the way the character walks and talks, bordering very closely to real life? If this is the direction games are heading, then i couldn't be happier.

But seriously, am i the only one that finds the animation of these characters leaps and bounds better than what we play now?

Not sure why this deserves it's own thread, but I'm not impressed by these videos. I keep fixating on the hair and the fact Leon has much better THIS generation.

I will be dissapointed if those are "next gen" graphics. While certain things like the hanging clothing look really good, the hair and the movement of the models just looks...off. It's hard to describe but perhaps the problem lies in the fact that it is just close enough to the valley of "weird/awkward/semi-real" in terms of graphics, for me to be totally turned off by even minute imperfections in the animation.

i don't know to me the animation; movement driving etc look very much like The Getaway at this moment sort of good looking at first sight but just akward if it starts to move.

Yawn. If this is the kind of gameplay I can expect from most next-gen titles, I'm so done with everything. What's pathetic is you hear this room full of "journalists" ooohing and aaahing over things that could have been done 5 years ago. What is wrong with this industry?

I hope Revolution truly does something different. These kind of games are getting stale.

can't judge graphics by EA's offerings.

After finally seeing this game in motion for the first time, I have to say: what the fuck? The animation really is stiff and robot like.

It's a nice video, I didn't find the animation too awkward, the facial animation was a step up, but still not quite human. It was somewhat impressive, but its EA, so the games itself will never be particularly outstanding beyond the graphics.

And really, if I want to watch The Godfather, isn't that what I have DVDs for? Its not really something I've ever thought of wanting play as a game. Too many games have aspired to be movies, sometimes at the sacrifice of interactivity, now we have games directly duplicating movies we've already seen.

Maybe I just like how Half-Life or Metroid go about it better. I don't mind some good presentation, but not when it becomes the selling point of a whole game. I'm playing the first Xenosaga now and OH GOD, I'm like 13 hours in and I'm ONLY level 15. Its just too much watching and not enough playing. What playing I get to do is pretty darn good, but its all so few and far between. At least Monolithsoft balanced it out with Baten Kaitos.

I'm in awe of EA's gall and brash monoplization of all manner of things. Oh yeah and Larry Probst coif, what an amazing coif it is.

Actually, it seems as if you are. :P Overall I'm very unimpressed with that (in the context of OMG NEXT GEN).

Excuse my ignorance (I never take the time to read about EA games) but is this supposed to be a next gen game? Cos that I've understood from the replies on this thread. If that applies then let me :lol:lol:lol

You guys need to understand that if this is next gen stuff it's probably not been in dev very long so anything that you see is probably very early or rushed. Marketing people are going to take and show stuff regardless of whether the artists think it's ready to be shown

Wikipedia

This principle states that as a robot is made more humanlike in its appearance and motion the emotional response from a human being to robot will become increasingly positive and empathetic, until a point is reached at which the response suddenly becomes strongly repulsive.

I think we're definitely bound to encounter a few of these awkward CG characters next-gen. See Polar Express for another good example.. not real kids, but damn close, and kind of unsettling and creepy.

When are we going to get rounded finger in a game. I have rounded fingers. You have rounded fingers. But apparently the Corlene family like to stick their hands in the old smoothing plane every night

When there is enough power to waste triangles on stuff like rounded fingers. Would you rather have rounded fingers or empty environments and blocky everything else

I talking about the video with Robert Duval and James Caan. As Sonny is waving his hands it looks like two fins attached to his arms.

Exac-fucking-dactly.

And it isn't just the animation, it's the fact that most CG animatord don't have the time to build a realistic skeletal structure to each character as well as an exterior. Again, referencing Polar Express, like the little African American girl that seemed to have a really unnatural curve to her back. Like extreme scoliosis.

But instead of coming across as a cute little kid (hell, even a cute disabled little kid), she seemed almost evil. So near reality that our brains perceive them as human until a contradiction is found in their behavior.

And sure enough, when I think of her, the image of the girl from Exorcist with her head spinning round comes to mind.

Guys, don't judge Godfather on this gen (PS2) video footage. Look at Gameplay video 6 on Gamespot and tell me that's not some of the best character animation during gameplay ever conceived. That's probably the PC or next gen console version. Most of those videos are from PS2 though. I agree that even the next gen version doesn't have the best graphics (models and some scenes look like Silent Hill 3 and facial animation isn't any better either) but in some ways it looks really damn good. Also look at trailer #2 from IGN.

Those Gamespot videos where quite a bit better than the ign ones. I wonder if number six is real gameplay, because it seem like a series of mini games or cutscenes

Haha thanks.. that was the word I was looking for - uncanny.
