Rumour: Next Xbox to cost twice as much as PS6

I don't really understand Microsoft plan to be honest.

They don't want profit on Xbox division, just simply reduce their expectations lower than zero and use Windows Software As A Service money to cost their dumb moves.

I think Sony will try to release the PS6 at $599-$699 (which would already be expensive for the mass market) and Xbox would go for a console at $899-$999, which would be direct commercial suicide.

I think they're knackered with future hardware at any price if I'm honest.

Rumor is stupid af and doesn't make any business sense.
MS is pushing subscription services from Office to GamePass, so why price yourselves out of getting as much subs as possible.

If you take the video sub services into account, they can play on almost everything; smart TVs, phones, tablets, PCs consoles, etc. MS was pursuing this with everything is an Xbox via XCloud.
There's no way they price themselves next gen at twice the competition especially after they are so behind this gen.

They might end up more expensive, but twice....no chance. Edit: At least for mainline console. You might have an Elite tier (basically highest end PC) that can play all your games from Steam or other PC games at Ultra).

Microsoft has given up on hardware as the focus of Xbox so no need to clutch pearls over it. It would come as no surprise to me to see them not subsidizing hardware to grow install base when they're also going to be selling games on every platform they can. I think that the main reason for them to provide hardware is going to be to support Game Pass, so I wouldn't be surprised to once again see a lower cost digital-only option to go along with a higher cost box.

It very much feels like Microsoft is still in the stage of figuring out the details, and all this confusion is why they don't talk about the details when they're in flux. I think the leakers are doing everyone a significant disservice here putting out half-baked information.

How much energy was wasted talking about the Xbox in-house hand-held only for MS to shelve it? Same thing for the Xbox streaming only box that was rumored for years before they killed it. This Xbox PC device could go the same way and get scrapped late next year. How much energy do we all want to waste talking about it between now and then?

MS announcement did say "First Party Consoles" as in plural.

I think they will aim for $499 and $799 baseline SKUs, and OEMs do higher priced SKUs with more storage or ram.

They feel like they're intentionally pulling a south park by trying to get themselves cancelled

Sorry but if you think a version of the next Xbox SKU will be 499 in this economy your going to be disappointed as MS is done with subsidizing their gaming hardware. Expect the next Xbox price to go for at least 600-700 for the lowest SKU.

Xbox no longer and probably will never be a driver for subscription growth. Especially now since xbox moved to be full multiplat.

And they need no hardware for this

Because they don't want to compete at all.
They want "branded device" sold at profit that are not associated as direct competition to PS6, but rather presented as convenient, easy-to-use for mass market high-value device in living room zone, priced on PC scale and not PS scale.
Like premium product for premium price to differentiate itself from both Nintendo and Sony to avoid battle they already don't expect winning.

If there is any truth to the leaks so far, this is coming out late next year. MS is well past the stage of figuring out the details. They must be figuring out how to message this though, so they don't confuse the heck out of their audience.

Seems like mere speculation.. would be an interesting dynamic if Sony went the cheap route and the new Xbox was substantially more powerful however..

That's not surprising based on what we've heard about the next Xbox. But at this point, if it wasn't very obvious, the Series generation of consoles will be the last time Microsoft's hardware strategy is based on trying to move millions upon millions of units. They're selling the ecosystem, gamepass, play anywhere, cloud, competing storefront integration, etc etc etc, whether that be on an 'Xbox' branded device or any other consumer electronic device that fits the 'this is an Xbox' mantra. So if the next Xbox 'console' costs $1000 and sells 5 million units, that's what it is.

Metro are idiots. Anyone could have figured out that was a possibility 18 months ago just by looking at OEM or laptop prices on Amazon. Some OEM are $3000. It's like they just discovered the existence of PCs.
… but this is supposed to be a console. Right? People will be shocked if anything calling itself a console breaks 1k regardless of what it can and cannot do. This is not being made for mass consumption. The mass consumers will riot… …or laugh and go buy a PC or PS6.

Its a box that plays Xbox BC games and all PC stores will run on it. What people decide to call it is largely irrelevant.

And of course people will pretend to be maximum shocked. Then Steam Machine could do the same thing and it would be nothing but articles about how much sense it makes. Metro are outrage merchants.

Keep in mind you would be getting Free MP. Plus it might actually be more powerful, we will have to see on that.

They'll still be too busy trying to figure out if the Xbox Ally is an Xbox or not.

What Microsoft calls it is relevant.
Its really not. They may call it a console to avoid a lawsuit for BC stuff but its a PC. I dont care what any insider says. It will run Steam, GoG and Epic. It will be priced like a PC.

People will suddenly figure it out and have zero questions or concerns when Valve does the same thing. Fake outrage and liars. The people concerned aren't even interested in getting one of these, at all.

If that's true, yikes. I thought this was speculated for holiday 2027.

Its like people still don't know whats going on. I was expecting 1500 - 2000 for 18 months. Just look at OEM PC prices. This is pretty normal. MS is making it open store so its not a closed ecosystem, subsidized box.

This would have been "breaking news" in February 2024.
Well if thats the case, MS needs to dip out of the console market then

Consoles have a place in the gaming world. Cost affordable machines that just work. If these consoles start pushing $800+, then just build your own pc and get much better performance to price

A PC is not going to be BC with Xbox games.

Why does outrage have to be fake if prices for consoles are getting outrageous? 🤷‍♂️
