Do you think that Harry has a photo of Dumbledore in his room? That would be so fucked up if he did :lol

Bet he has a photo in his wallet, to carry Dumbledore with him at all times.

I was under the impression that Dumbledore lived on in those wierdo photos that the Harry Potter universe has. So if he had a bedside table portrait of Dumbledore, nookie with Ginny would be pretty fucked. Or maybe Harry gets off on that who knows, I don't really care.

Back on topic, Boromir is awesome. His dad is such a dick though.

I can't remember exactly, but I'm not sure they actually 'lived' in the photos, just that the photos were.. kind of displaying live feeds from past events, if you see what I mean :lol The portraits in the headmaster's office at Hogwarts (and a couple of other portraits, like the one in Sirius' house) are 'living'. Or something. Either way, Dumbledore was gay, so if Harry had a portrait of Dumbledore in his bedroom, Dumbledore would probably be more interested in Harry in the nude than Harry humping Ginny :lol

Boromir was indeed a bad dude. His dad was an asshole.

aww don't hate on denethor, he saw the end of Gondor, and also the end of his house/line and fell into despair...then madness

IMO, he didn't do anything "wrong" until he tried to burn himself and Faramir alive

Yeah. And that whole abject paranoia from peering a little too much into that Palantir, refusing to release his regentship, and yeah, that whole lighting him and his son on fire thing. That tends to give you a bad rep.

At least he went out with style :)

Also, am I the only one who looks at the Palantir as a lost opportunity by PJ and crew? Considering that all the movies were completed before releasing the full DVD sets, I thought it would be awesome to redo the images in the Palantir and Galadriel's reflecting pool to show stuff from the later movies instead of just bits from the current movie. Imagine Frodo looking into that pool and seeing flashes of Helm's Deep or the battle at Minas Tirith, or even Gollum?

He was grossly mischaracterized by Jackson and crew. Don't understand a character? Make him into Nero!

That's a cool idea actually. Didn't they show the Scouring of the Shire in the pool?

El Papa said:

They did, but considering that there wasn't a scouring of the Shire in the actual movies, its kindof a lost point.

Looking in the Palantir did not affect the quality of any of his decisions until the whole pyre incident, not to mention that fact that since he had the right to view the stone and foresaw a great battle in his time, it would have been irresponsible to not use the Palantir.

On the subject of giving up his regentship

1. Aragorn would not have made him give it up (as shown by letting Faramir keep the office of Steward, and giving the title of Prince of Ithilien and Lord of Emyn Arnen)

2. He considered Isildur's line bereft of lordship, but in fact Aragorn was descended both from the line of Anarion (to whose house Denethor was Steward) and Isildur, and once shown proof of his lineage he most likely would have relented

3. Denethor could not have held out politically against the entire Gondorian Ruling Council or the people, especially if Aragorn came back victorious from the battle on the dagorlad

I'm sure they would had loved to show stuff like Helm's Deep or Gollum in the pool but I guess the problem was that Gollum's design for example was nowhere near finished when FotR came out.

That's certainly true. I was thinking they could have done it before releasing the extended DVD versions.

The original Star Wars trilogy didn't have a black dude (unless you count that cunt Lando), but then they added in Samuel L. Jackson to have a black dude who's black enough to count for 2 trilogies.

So I'm hoping in the 2 Hobbit films that they add Denzel Washington's character from Training Day "Alonzo Harris" because he was the fucking man and everyone should know it, including Gandalf

Isildur's line identifies aragorn, it has nothing to do with the difference between the houses of anarion and isildur. Also, denethor made many poor decisions leading up to the events of the war at minas tirith by looking in the palantir. If you read the books it is very clear he's been doing so for a long time and really screwing things up.

Cool. So who would be the token black character then? I think we should also have a mexican, a chinese, an indian, hell even a character with an american accent as well. Then no one can complain.. right?

Each dwarf should be a different race. Couldn't possibly offend anyone that way right?

Seriously though, yes, Dumbledore pulls off more flashy special effects and magic compared to Gandalf, and yes, Gandalf works mainly through influencing others (but it's been explained adequately in this thread why Gandalf does that), but if you would let Gandalf, without having him restrain his magical and divine powers, go one on one against Dumbledore, I really can't imagine Dumbledore emerging as the winner.

Sad... gaf has officially reached gamefaqs level. Dumbledore vs. Gandalf? Seriously?!

:lol

See, even if you were joking, that is ridiculous in itself. Considering Dwarves are covered in beard, it wouldn't matter anyway. Dwarves would be white anyway, if we're looking at logic, because they live in caves.

Regardless, the whole race thing is seriously dumb.

Boromir was indeed a bad dude. His dad was an asshole.

But in the first book, Boromir was always whining about the fate of men, whining about this and that, whine whine whine.

Though the fight in the woods was more awesome in the books than in the film by far.

I have been checking out these lectures on Tolkien's work:
http://www.tolkienprofessor.com/lectures/lectures.html (also on Itunes)

Very informative and goes pretty deep into world Tolkien created. The professor actually gives Tolkien classes in his University. The lectures have covered everything until halfway the Hobbit. He said he is planning to do Tolkien's entire work (Silmarillion and LotR), so I suppose this thing will go on for a long long time.

yeah and we should add some black characters into movies about roman and greek gods, why isn't Zeus blacks? I mean it's racist that Zeus has to be white, he should be played by Will Smith in the Clash of the Titans remake

Why aren't Vikings black? I mean that's some real political incorrect shit right there!

Agreed.....needs more "Welcome to Earf". Better yet...maybe Will can buy his son into the role of Bubo, the owl?

there was a black x-wing pilot in Return of the Jedi

I want some Asian vikings in that viking movie Mel Gibson is planning. And I think they should have a black guy as Snorri Sturlason.

The Palantíri don't let you see the future, that's something that Elrond and Galadriel (and elves in general) normally do. They are just cellphones for the lords of the numenoreans. Denethor was either stupid enough to try to spy on Sauron using it, or he believed that it actually DID show the future. You'd have to be really powerful, which he wasn't, to manipulate them to do anything else. In any case, in his position he should have known very well that all of them were lost except the Orthanc and the Minas Morgul stones, so that there wouldn't be anyone nice to chat with anyway.

I have read the books dawg, pray tell some decisions he made that were bad (barring the pyre incident)

Saruon just showed him the armies arrayed against him, and Denethor drew his conclusions from there.

Denethor knew they didn't show the future...he used them to gather intelligence on the movements his enemies were making. Can you show me where Denethor thought they showed the future?

No, Aragorn is descended from both the line of Isildur and Anarion. Arvedui, last king of Arthedain (direct descendant of eldest child from Isildur) married Firiel (direct descendant of eldest child from Anarion), daughter of King Ondoher of Gondor. The Kings of Arnor and Kings of Arthedain (except Arvedui) are not part of both houses and not eligible for the Kingship of Gondor (unless the question of the High Kingship is brought up) but Arvedui and all Chieftains of the Dunedain of the North are descendants from both Houses.

I think you misunderstood me, I know all that. I mean when the characters in the movies refer to isildur's line they are in fact referring to aragorn.

You still haven't supported this, I'm interested because I never saw Denethor do anything wrong, but another set of eyes might help me see this from another angle

This is the longest LOTR thread in a long time :)

Yes I've read the fucking books and I didn't see anywhere the Palantir affect's Denethor's decision making (except for the pyre shit).

You've asked twice if I've read them instead of giving a fucking example of Denethor messing up because of the palantir.
