On my way now via Greyhound. Anything of worth to do within walking distance of the station? We've got about 2 and a half hours to kill before we can check in to our hotel and we've got big bags with us if that makes any difference.

I'd suggest calling ahead to the hotel and asking if you could store your bags there for a couple of hours until you check in.

It's a hostel on Beverly Blvd operated with a door code that doesn't activate until 4pm. Don't even think there's a front desk or anything to ask to do that. We're considering seeing if we can store a bag at the greyhound station and walk into downtown to get some lunch or something. Google maps says its only a 25 minute walk.

Just be careful with the greyhound station in Downtown, its in a sketchy area so make sure your belongings will be somewhere safe. Also its pretty far from everywhere else walking wise. You can walk to Little Tokyo I suppose.

Any taxi recommendations for the Beverly/Western area? Preferably one that will go to and from the beachy coast area. Thanks, I'm loving your city so far!

I've had one good experience each with UberX and Sidecar. Lyft is good too. Or if you want a 'real' taxi, use the Taxi Magic app, which I've also liked better than calling a dispatcher and then waiting forever for a cab that never did come.

Thanks, will those definitely have coverage in those areas? And how reliable are taxis booked in advance? We need to get back to the Greyhound station for a very specific time early Saturday morning and don't want to be waiting around for something that isn't going to turn up.

Just got back from a day out at Venice beach/Santa Monica. God damn I love this place.

Also, for anyone that may be even moderately interested in my work/travels around the US I've got a small tumblr thing going on with a few pictures and whatnot: wjdusa.tumblr.com

What are the best places to meet chicks in LA?

Not in Hollywood or trendy bars, those women can be very stuck up. When I was single, the beach/westside communities. Venice, Hermosa, Culver City good looking women, laid back atmosphere. Hermosa Beach pier for the college kiddies, Venice/Culver City for the 20-30 somethings slumming it and, as a bonus, if you like rich MILFs, Marina Del Rey is full of divorcées looking to get in trouble.

7 hours later, power restored.

This wasn't quite as bad as 6 or so months ago when my power was out for 12 hours when it was 40 degrees outside with a healthy wind. No heat, no insulation, that was pretty miserable.

This was just uncomfortable and really boring once it was too dark to read and the laptop/smartphone batteries were gone.

I don't have AC but I do have a couple of fans. The breeze was blowing the wrong way to keep the house cool without them. Kinda sucked.

Given SCE's existence as counter-evidence, I don't get why the LA Weekly shits on DWP unions all the time.

I wouldn't blame the union (being a union guy myself) but DWP is crazy expensive. I pay a lower rate with a family of 5 here in Pasadena than my mother does living alone in LA. It's ridiculous.

On the 13th I have a friend coming in to watch the Dodgers/Giants game. She wants to go to hookah afterwards. Anyone know of a nice place around the stadium? Also, she's from Japan and has never been to LA. So I am not sure where I am going to take her. Suggestions?

If she's here for more than a day or two you will probably have to get some Japanese food.

Hey LA GAF, I'm thinking about coming over for two and a half weeks to catch some Lakers games before Kobe retires, thinking about mid feb with the long stretch of home games including Bulls, Thunder and Rockets. Looking for a bunch of info like where to get cheap rental cars, restaurants I have to try and so on, any good city guides around?

Why is everyone saying that the Valley sucks? Just moved here (South Pasadena) and it seems awesome so far. Should I be expecting something shitty to happen because I live here or something???

Edit: and no one say the weather. As someone from Texas, it's embarrassing when I hear people complain that it's hot here. People are bitching about 90 degree weather (at worst), while Dallas goes thru a week of 100+ degree weather on a regular basis

that thing is mostly terrible.

though the valley doesn't entirely suck any more than other parts of LA. Along Ventura Blvd it's quite nice in a lot of places.

I don't think South Pasadena counts as the valley

LOL apparently not many Valley lovers here. Hey, any place that is the home of the Karate Kid AND porn can't be all bad.

And I think the San Fernando Valley officially stops before Glendale in the east.

Well that explains a lot, I guess lol. Some people from work always tell me that I live in the valley (San Gabriel? Not sure)

You live in the good and right valley, that of San Gabriel. Plus you're in South Pas so I know its gotta be nice.

When people refer to "The Valley" they're talking about that hot nasty overcrowded disaster area to the west of Burbank.

Can anyone recommend a sort of lounge-y type bar that can accommodate a group of 15-20 people for a birthday - where also the music isn't so overbearing that one can't hear each other?

My friend is turning 27 and is looking for a venue.

Anyone know of anywhere to buy GTA 5 early in SoCal? I would give a lot to be able to play it this weekend. I am discrete, I won't go blabbing to anyone else.

There is a mom and pop store on Venice in Culver City called Game Play, that would traditionally break street dates. Might want to give them a try.

I'm an older guy, late 30's, and partied in Echo Park this past weekend. What a blast, I live the scene there. Come as you are, everyone's welcome, all people of different backgrounds, a true LA experience.
