I found out way too late that there's a LA chiptune scene,

and that their event has been going on all weekend:

https://www.facebook.com/8bitla

today's the last day if ppl are interested.

I'd go but I'm way too tired from last nite...

super secret underground dance parties, where they dont give u the address until a few hours prior, and require you to have 2 passwords just to get past the gatekeepers =P

also I live in OC, dont wanna drive out again =P x 2

Ate at Babita recently. Found it on a few lists for best Mexican food in LA county. It was good but not really as impressed as the reviewers.

One place I think you guys should go to is 26 beach. That shit is soooo goooood. I think I might go there in a few just thinking about it.

What do you like to do? Do you know anyone down here? There's a lot to do, man. Are you single? Do you mind driving?

Alright I'm buying a condo in Koreatown near 3rd and Normandie!

This will be a great change of pace from living in the quite and boring SGV and be a hell of a better commute to Downtown.

I like to watch movies, play videogames, take photos, go on scenic walks/hikes, see comedy shows, etc.

I don't really know anyone down here, just people in my class.

I am single.

I do not mind driving.

Go to UCB, iO, and maybe Groundlings and Second City. (I've never been to the latter two, but they're comedy institutions.) If you find you really like improv, especially improv more like the first two theaters, you may also want to check out indie improv shows around town. (and even if you don't like it the first time you see it, I'd give it a couple of chances. Different shows have different vibes. iO and esp UCB shows don't go over $10, and many are $5.)

Follow the Comedy Central Stage on Facebook or on their blog and check out their shows. It's free, you just need to call and make a reservation. The shows I've been to there have been good to great.

There are multiple podcasts recording around town that take audiences, like Harmontown and others hosted at Meltdown Comics.

LA is also a good city for stand-up comedy, but that's mostly something I don't know that much about.

There's literally almost too much for you to do.

You like movies? Well, have you even been to The Chinese Theater? A lot of history and a great setting if you are into that sort of thing. You want weird foreign/indie movies? Nuart or This place in Pasadena.
If you just want a smaller venue go to the New Beverly, they play some cool shit and how can you not like Tarantino's heroics. I could go on but I think you should start there. Let me know if you have any feedback. There are obviously big chains but you have most likely been to those already.

I don't take photos or hike, I run on one of the beaches every Saturday. That's about as close as it gets for me.

Comedy shows. I'm sure that you have heard of the Laugh Factory. I mean, Look at this thing's Wiki. We have one in Long Beach, Hollywood and there is one inside of a Casino according to that website in San Manuel (I didn't know that.) ACME does sketch stuff and it can be pretty cheap. Beat hooked it up pretty good with the comedy recommendations.

Being single I don't know if you do the bar scene or go to clubs.

I've lived here for 6 years now.

There are still moments when I see something in a certain way, especially while driving on the freeway after dark, when I just sit up and say to myself "Jesus Christ this place is gigantic." Years later, I still can't get over the sprawl of southern California. And it's not like I came here from the country. I've lived and worked in major US cities for most of my life and visited pretty much all of them, and yet... holy crap, this place is big.

It's crazy when you realize that Cali is bigger than a lot of countries.

hell yes, thank you for showing me all this. been looking into a lot of those theaters already. i'm like three blocks away from the hollywood hills so i'm pretty close to some good hiking/running trails... was kinda just wondering if there were any i wasn't yet aware of.

I don't understand how you can move here and not find something to do. I've lived her for over a year now and I keep myself entertained.

Here is something to do this week:

I've been in school all but three of the days I've been here and I work before I play. This is my last week of class, though.

lol arcade parties? sounds raucous. definitely gonna look into this.

I'm actually leaving it behind to pursue a new opportunity working for friend who is going to pay more and offer a chance at coming up with my own concept in time.

Cool shit. Hope everything works out for you.

Any of you been to the Pot Lobby Bar yet? I heard some good things about it.

the main outdoor water drainage line was backed up, causing the two drains in my private atrium to not drain, causing that to flood my atrium with four inches of water which eventually flooded my house.

awesome

Hey dudes, for someone without a car do you know of any decent Chinese food places closer to the West Side? Specifically Santa Monica? (Non touristy-PF Changs stuff please)

Just moved here from Chicago

I've been there but not to drink just to check out the design during the daytime, it looks cool but I'm going to wait for the restaurant to open too (hopefully it'll be decent since I'm going to move within half a mil of this place).

ROC Kitchen on Sawtelle (Little Osaka). Chinese food in West LA tends to not be so bread.

I haven't tried most of those west places listed by LA Eater, but my off-the-cuff impressions are that Hop Li and Hop Woo are serviceable and ROC Kitchen is actually good. The one time I went to Hu's Szechwan, they were closed that day, so call ahead.

Thanks for all the wonderful Asian food suggestions guys!
I'm really liking LA (Santa Monica so far), I moved out of Chicago right in the nick of time.
Dodged that winter.

Is anyone into live music? What venues would you guys recommend?
Anyone play music? Want to start a band?

Why does it feel like every earth quake in LA in the last 6 months was centered right under my house (Playa/Marina Del Rey)? Shake somewhere else damnit

Texas is similar but over here there's a lot of emptiness in the western half of the state. It seems like California is more evenly distributed in civilization:nature ratio.

Had Jinky's because I heard it was a good place for breakfast. It was sort of okay. Not sure why that place is so popular.
