Lost Planet 2 |OT| Rolling, Grappling, Bugs and Mechs

Penny-Arcade has a good write up of how good this game is. I agree with this.

"This is a game that needs to be batted back up into the air, reintroduced to the discussion. I've had experiences in Lost Planet 2 that put it very near the top of this year's releases, though I don't see why we should limit the scope to this year. Distinct and stylish, their characters are steeped in some bizarre, nanopunk aesthetic that is wholly their own. Beautiful cutscenes show your bad-ass quartet from the best possible angle. Then, you're tasked with broad objectives in far-flung locales that satisfy night after night.

The Apparatus is returning a nebulous result on Lost Planet 2, but most of the things I've read about the game are irrelevant to me. I happen to like the weird stories in Japanese games, and hearing that a co-op game is best played in co-op ain't exactly front page material. "We" have "said" for years that we want meaningful co-op experiences, but when they're delivered to us, they must give an impeccable single-player performance as well?

Here's what I do know. Out of nowhere, this supposed "shooter" became a bizarre puzzle game in the middle of the desert, where my friends and I had to learn to crew a massive, train-driven deck gun. We failed our first attempt, but in the best possible way - considering the problem for days, until reuniting to claim victory.

It has grand ideas, and longs to show you them. No, it's not perfect. How could it be? This is how the future happens, sometimes; it comes in fits and starts.

(CW)TB out."

Fuck yeah! :D

PA is right on with that. The co-op is a designed very interestingly, and I even find the single player fun (the AI isn't that bad). Even in single-player, I like the fact that many levels can be approached in many different ways, and there are so many weapons and styles of play that you can play levels in radical different ways.

I am giving PA's recent post Australia's highest accolade - ten out of ten and a koala stamp.

Brilliant stuff. I'm loving single player, so damn if I won't have a constant erection when I can finally get some co-op going!

I don't think the AI is bad at all, it's fairly simple and basically just acts like a turret. It's no replacement for another person is it's only problem, especially since it won't do certain things, namely most of the tasks during 3-3.

4-2 has such great maps, I absolutely love the design of this game and how it's geared towards the ultimate co-op experience. Reminds me of early 90s arcade games. Having a mech in the corner, set up so that it can't jump off the platform so it's almost stuck on rails, allowing a single player to help escort the other players on the sub is just amazing.

Interesting thing happened last night. Got Lv 70 on the Rounders faction, which should give you the Gun Sword. However, I already had the Gun Sword from the slot machine earlier. It actually gave me the Gun Sword SP, which is just the Gun Sword but way better.

That said, I don't really care about the spoiler but...seriously? A week is the statute of limitations for spoilers in your mind?

edit: I take back what I said about being done with the game. I took one more shot at 3-3 before sending it back to gamefly and beat it. I'm back! :lol
Good to hear you're back in - it really is great.

Also - no spoiler tags for information that is given in the first ~2 hours of gameplay is something I wouldn't spoiler anymore. Mid-game and end-game info is what I would spoiler a week out.

I'm only on 2-3 and this is already my Game of the Year. Holy shit this is a fucking good game. It's actually hard, too, unlike Demon's Souls that only pretends to be hard. Just got it yesterday and started up a hard mode run with a couple buddies, S ranks the whole way :D

I wish I could be wesker in the story mode, though. :-(

You can be once you beat the campaign once.

God this game is amazing. I just finished 3-2 so am about to go into that level :p I'm kinda reserving judgement overall until I finish the level and the game, but so far this is a huge improvement from the original, a game I really love.

Bouncing about between SP and MP at the minute, MP is so addictive and the maps are all great so far.

I don't understand the negative press this game is getting it's crazy.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the Gun Sword SP regardless of whether you've got the original or not. As a minor note, the GSSP is way better as a sword, but the gun part is really bad even compared to the original Gun Sword.
GSSP is one of the best weapons in the game for taking down VSs or big Akrid (assuming you can get close), but the normal one is a lot better if you're going to need to shoot with it too, or against soldiers and players (who die after the first one or two swings and don't really need the third).

I should really grind up some of the different factions. I want the Shuriken and the Akrid Launcher. I kind of want to get all the Femme Fatales parts first though.

Seriously,

At this point, I honestly think Capcom seems to have made a sequel that is solely for it's rabid (though small/niche) fanbase. Whether delibrately or not.

I really doubt this ever even had a chance at appealing to western tastes....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBEDo4t89Pg&feature=related - Everybody needs to watch this video, it has a bunch of tips about grappling and rolling along with some other stuff. It's all in japanese, but most of the stuff is self explanatory.

I've played the game a ton and there's a bunch of stuff there I had no idea about. A quick summary:
-Aim at the top of structures with the grappling hook and press X again when near it to land on top right away, without doing the jump.
-Video shows the exact timing for when you're invincible during a roll, and a nasty trick how to use grenades with a roll.
-You can headshot people in turrets or VS to make them jump out immediately... which I'm not sure if I can even believe yet without trying it myself, this will change the game entirely.

This makes me wish the PC release was earlier. Most of that stuff will be SO much easier to do with a mouse and keyboard than a gamepad.

Kinda ironic considering Lost Planet was supposed to be a game appealing to western audiences in the first place, but they still kept all of the oldschool stuff from the first game which people complained about (like being able to get stunned).

I'm happy that Capcom still makes games which are very much in their own style. Games like LP2, DMC4, Dead Rising and RE5 are among the most unique AAA titles released this generation. I just hope Capcom continues to ignore mainstream criticism and makes games in that style as long they sell well enough.

People who complain that something like LP2 or RE5 doesn't play like typical shooters should take a close look at the current shooter lineup and realize that 99% of them kinda play the same!

Fairly late to the party,

I got my ass handed to me on the first LP, would I still enjoy playing LP2 if I never finished the first game because of pure frustration?

Although I did enjoy the multiplayer immensely.

I'm > < this close to picking it up on Friday.

This game is alot of fun but the roulette thing is pissing me off as ive only got two guns from probably 20 spins of it! and I dont have the patience to spin spin spin then log out/back in!

Gah, I am so sore my net is running at the speed it is right now...of all the weeks in the year, they had to do whatever they're doing NOW. We'll see how it goes come the weekend, but damn...I just want to have a few rounds of multiplayer with a ping a little closer to any sort of double digit figure! I'm riding something that feels like it's in the thousands...not optimal for enjoyment at all.

But hey, brilliant game. Loving it so much! We are the defense force!

Yea, I'm just as addicted to the MP since the first game. Has there been a list of how the hell the Ranked mode titles works? Just hit Vice-Admiral last night, and have no idea how good or bad that is.

In LP1 I was addicted to the MP and loved it. In LP2 I'm addicted to the co-op and loving it even more than the MP. One of the best parts of the game is figuring out how to do stuff, especially in a cooperative setting. I don't see what the gripe is from all these reviewers saying they couldn't understand where to go. If you don't want to take the time to explore, learn from your mistakes, and appreciate the satisfaction of getting it right the next time around, then maybe they should start reviewing something else.

Herein lies the problem with modern reviewers and games. Just because it's a shooter doesn't mean it has to be as accessible as a COD or Halo game.

I think most people wouldn't complain so much about 3-3 if it was simply made into 3-4.

Glad to hear this is becoming other people's GOTY as well.

Wow at reviews...not touching even with a ten foot pole.

Never liked LP1, thought I would this but chance that I would try for changes (?) in second is now dispersed.

I was so looking forward to this game since it was announced.

Biggest disappoint of 2010 so far.

All is not lost for me. If they patched the game to include in-and-out co-op and level select, I'll be there.

This is my only real gripe of the game. I would've even settled to be able to watch how the team I was joining progressed through the current level before I was allowed to join. Instead you're stuck in a lobby having to wait for who knows how long. Can get really annoying.

Level select I'd like, but drop-in-and-out co-op would be pretty abusable considering the way the game is designed. The Battle Gauge (afaik) doesn't deplete when your AI teammates die but does if your co-op partners die, so if any of you are close to death you can just drop out just before the character dies and then drop back in without penalty. That's with the current system, of course.

I do agree that it'd be better if you were able to see the action going on instead of waiting at the lobby screen though...

Maybe if the community screams loud enough, Capcom will hear it. They seem to care as evidenced by CE and Tourney modes added to SFIV

Has anyone figured out how in the hell to get an S-Rank in Chpt 1-2? Did the secret path, did everything...have no clue what I'm doing to not get past a B rank.

I saw use the coolest emote the other day. A character was able to form a cloud above his head and it rained on him. What is the name of this emote?

I think its called "Life Sucks", or something like that.

Did anyone buy the MP maps? I have some MS points spare and was considering it as I'm going to be playing the MP for a while. I also want to see another 8-bit map like in the original!

Your around Europe yeah?

Will definitely have to do that. I got a coworker who will also be a dedicated player, so we can at least have a team of 3

Send me an invite when you can. My play hours are usually from 8pm - 1130pm, Berlin time
