LTTP: Dark Souls (PS3)

it's not a spoiler. The great hollow is a fairly difficult area leading down to ash lake. Getting down is tricky enough, but getting back UP is nigh impossible. There's a lot of ridiculous drops, and unclear footing.

You really want to wait until you have the item that allows you to teleport from one bonfire to another, which you get after you complete new londo.

Anor Londo, actually. I know that's what you meant.

I was just trying to be as courteous as possible with potential spoilers.

Am I being silly sticking with and upgrading the Broadsword, when the Drake sword does more damage?

Is Attunement useful for anything for a non-magic user? I'm only really upgrading Vitality, Endurance, Strength and Dexterity

But what about
The 4 Kings in New Londo. I've already drained the water so I've gotten that far.
Am I really ready for that?

no, you probably aren't. You need to defeat Sif first in the darkroot forest (I don't know if you have or not) before you can even approach them. You also need to clear anor londo (it unblocks the entrances to several bosses- nito, bed of chaos, 4 kings, and seath)

There's quite a few other things I'd do first, honestly.

oh right, I always screw that up.

Eh..the broadsword isn't great, but if you end up maxing it out at +15 or whatever it will outdamage the drake sword pretty handily. The Drake sword isnt really that good of a weapon- it does new players more harm than good by encouraging them to stick with it long after it's actually useful.

as for attunement, it's always good to have a slot or two if for no other reason than spells like magic weapon, iron flesh or similar that are useful for melee. they come in handy in a tight spot.

Anor Londo, actually. I know that's what you meant.

Dammit looking for that thing is the entire reason I went to New Londo.

Here is what I'm looking for.
Whatever that thing is that lets me teleport between bonfires
The giant blacksmith?
Large ember so I can take my weapons to +15

I would be ok doing New Londo first if that is where I should be anyway. I've already got a +10 Washing Pole so I'm doing good for now. I was in Anor Lando but left because I thought I was supposed to be in New Londo. It's not that far of a trip if I need to go back though.

You can ignore attunement if you're not using magic. I've never bothered with magic myself in all my playthroughs.

You're OK with upgrading the Broadsword. Most people would recommend other swords, but I did a Longsword on my first playthrough, and a Scimitar on my most recent. Dexterity will be the stat you should focus on most.

Someone else can provide you with more specific information there. The Drake Sword does not scale, you're really better off not upgrading it at all.

You need to beat Anor Londo to get
the Lordvessel, which allows you to warp.

The giant blacksmith is also there.

That particular ember is in New Londo Ruins, it's actually called the Very Large Ember.

Also, would it make any sense to upgrade my scythe to a fire weapon instead of my Uchigatana? I've been looking for a good reason to use this bad ass scythe.

first thing - beat Anor Londo
second thing - path off the main halls right before the Anor Londo bosses
third thing - New Londo after you drain the water, there's a room with a giant goo and some darkwraith guys in huts on either side, in the corner of said room is stairs, just keep going up

don't upgrade the uchi to fire. It scales too well with dex. you want to upgrade that to +15. If you want fire on top of that, there's an item you can use that will apply fire on top of the +15 damage.

Do whatever you want to the scythes, they're not really great weapons so it doesn't matter.

If you like the moveset, go for it. The great scythe and Lifehunt Scythe are great weapons. The lifehunt scythe with some anti-bleeding gear is unbelievable in PvE.

Bleeding is such a great status effect.

I did a thief run recently and upgraded the bandit knife all the way to +15. So nice when every third or fourth hit you see that blood spray out and a huge chunk of HP vanishes. Even better that it actually works on some bosses.

yeah, lifehunt is probably the exception there. the rest of them though...ehh

The great scythe has the exact same moveset as the lifehunt. The two-handed moveset for both those weapons is amazing. The running+light and the regular strong attack are so damn good. The bleed effect isn't as good, but it does more damage.

Great Scythe is terrific, especially the running attack. At least for PvP it's a good weapon.

A Lightning/Chaos Great Scythe is amazing. Low requirements, especially when wielded with both hands and damn fast in its range-category. Bit more reach than the Lifehunt Scythe as well.
Quick-dodge to Attack does the same attack as a sprint-attack, and is extremely fast, so PVP against the unwary is a cinch. Normal standing attacks are a bit less good though, striking slightly off-center from where you'd think.
Guys I have a problem, I can't bring myself to finish the game.
I'm hooked on farming shards.
Welcome to my world of "+10 everything for every character every game". I just can't help myself!

I need to just walk through that last fog door and smash the last boss. Weird thing is I probably wont play new game +. So why the hell am I farming?!
I think there is just something about walking up to the titanite demon and smashing him in the face over and over, or backstabbing black knights over and over for the pain they gave me at the beginning of the game.

Just finished it. Pleasantly surprised. I could never get into Demon's Souls, but Dark felt more cohesive and fair.

The ending
is AWFUL though. The Dark Lord ending was marginally more fleshed out, judging from YouTube, but still terribly unsatisfying.

After a month or more break from the game, I decided to try and fiinsh it, seriously Gwyn is one cheap sob.
Almost broke my controller last night, I just decided to stop playing again.

Ending:
This game has the worst ending I have ever seen in a video game.

Im not sure which LTTP Dark Souls thread is the most current, but I finally grew a big enough pair of balls to finally play this. I have it coming Wednesday. My question is are there any guides out there with some pointers for beginners? I beat Demons Souls a couple years ago, but Im gonna need a refresher.

started a new character (Wanderer build).

It's been fun, considering my first run of Dark Souls was a tanking knight that I just pummeled enemies with.
Having a quicker build is a blast. I was able to school Havel by just flipping around him and backstabbing.

You know what I love about this game?
Everytime I get cocky, know the exact route/exact enemy placement, and want to just rush my way through I still find myself making a fatal mistake here and there. The game is great with reminding you that it's far meaner than you are at any given time. :p

The Dark Souls Wiki page, but honestly, if you've beaten Demon's Souls than you should know what you're in for. Echoing almost everyone else- try going in as blind as possible. The opening area will give you all the refresher you need.
Personally I found Demon's Souls more difficult than Dark.

How do you beat 4 Kings on New Game Plus? They are impossible.

Oh, Im a magic user with a +4 Ugikatana. Elite Knight chest, Gold hemmed legs, Gold hemmed hood, Elite Knight arms. All as upgraded as possible.

Thoughts?

Bought the DLC, still haven't played it

/ashamed

I think it's because I had played through the game about 100 times before the DLC dropped, and my characteritis meant another new build which I grew bored on leveling.

Need to get my act together and get the DLC done. Is there any good strength based weapons in the DLC? I know it's mostly good for DEX/INT, but I think I feel like creating a new char and take advantage of the high end STR weapons for some fun.

Your weapon is +4 or is that a typo? If not, it should be +15 and hopefully buffed since you're a magic user - Crystal Magic Weapon only needs something like 25 INT to use.

The standard advice for 4 Kings is just hack away up close with high poise and heal when necessary - Put on something like Havel, Giants or Stone armour sets and just tank it, two-handing your weapon.

Since you're also a magic user, you can also use your most powerful/fastest spells. Use crystal homing mass/spear etc - put on the bellowing ring, but maybe not dusk crown since it also increases your damage taken from magic as well as buffing your own magic. On that note, using the crest shield with it's 80% magic reduction is also recommended.

Any stamina regen items or Green blossom is useful - if you were going for the bellowing ring but not dusk crown, you are free to use mask of Child and cloranthy ring.

Lastly remember to keep hacking away even when one king has died, the last couple of seconds as they disappear you can still inflict damage (same goes for Pinwheel when he warps, not sure if there are any other examples)

Thanks to the chat while I was streaming I got past the first boss :) Might try to do it more regularly it was fun but I think I made every noob mistake there was.

Once you reach Firelink Shrine there are several directions to go in. If you are finding it very hard to kill enemies, that's the game telling you not to go that way yet - and that's the kind of advice the game gives you, the environment and it's inhabitants themselves are the clues.

If you're in a graveyard area with skeleton warriors, you are going the wrong path for now, come back a little later. Try going up instead, have a look around Firelink Shrine, you will see the other way.

Don't worry too much about losing souls, especially early on. It will surprise you how easy it is, not too much further in the game, to get amounts you were precious about early on.

General tips:

- Watch your green stamina bar. When you block hits stamina depletes, as well as when you yourself attack. And with your shield up it regenerates much slower, so it's important to drop your guard when you're not blocking a hit so that it will regen faster. No stamina = guardbreak and stun leaving you completely open to the enemy. Having said that, if you're walking into a new area, you never know what is going to lunge out at you, so walk with your shield up just in case! Caution is rewarded in Dark Souls - running into a new area YOLO-style can have you sent back to your last bonfire before you even know what happened!

- Upgrading your weapon is more important than levelling up your character. As soon as you are able to start doing so, start upgrading your primary weapon of choice, and there are many weapons to chose from so have a play with the different types, it's fun how varied they are.

- Levelling up: The resistance stat is useless, never waste points on that. Vitality and Endurance are important for any character build. The rest is kind of obvious, if you're a magic user, Intelligence is important, a Cleric, Faith, you want to use big weapons, strength etc, etc.

- Have fun! The game isn't anywhere near as punishing as it's made out to be, a lot of it is common sense.

there are some really fun STR weapons in the game, but none in the DLC specifically. i just finished the game with a STR character and really enjoyed it.

Thanks guys, i thought it would be massively cringe worthy.

I'll try and do another hour same time tonight, hopefully it goes better, I'll get to that other bonfire first, cant believe I missed it, how clueless of me ;)

I've really gotten back into this game again lately. Bought the DLC, and since then I've progressed very far with the magic user I made, then made an all strength guy (gave up on that as my NG+++(+?) guy already has 42 STR). But I made a Dex guy, and using bows this has made the game play ever so slightly different. But I love it. I've been helping a lot of co-op bosses in Blighttown, farming shards while waiting to be summoned. As a result, my Iaito and black bow are +10 before Sen's.

What really annoys me about this game though, is the players that low level their way through the game, getting high level gear in the process, then going back to Undead Parish and griefing guys. What do they gain? If it's new players, they get a couple hundred souls and 1 humanity if they're lucky.

There was a fun moment in the Depths, though. I revived to human at the bonfire, and waited for summons. Got invaded. It was one of the above mentioned high level gear guys. I managed to summon. This guy also had good gear. I, on the other hand, still had my Bandit's Knife, with its glorious range and +5 stats. They went at it in the narrow corridor, and eventually the invader pushed back into the bonfire room. But I managed to summon a 2nd guy, and it somehow ended at the other end of the tunnel by the stairs with all 3 of us around him giving him the beat down he deserved. The 1st summoner saved me that day but I forgot his name.

I can understand people finding the endings "boring" if they hadn't really been paying much attention to the lore or details of the world, but I can't understand people saying it was "unsatisfying" or "the worst ending ever"... When I finally beat it my first time and accidentally got the
Dark Lord ending
I felt robbed, cheated, baffled, betrayed by my own character, after all I'd taken him through. It was very interesting and emotional, far more than many other games I've played through this gen.

I'm really curious as to what exactly wasn't satisfying about it. Should it have been longer? Did you want a medal or something? There are many games out there with massive exposure in the ending, that fill a need for "closure" and tell you exactly how/why everything plays out. Dark Souls didn't need to adhere to this, and was all the better for it, imo.

This has always happened you just have to let it go. Most people doing this used the BB glitch when it worked or similar ways to twink their characters out, so they don't care about in-game goals, they just get off on griefing - that's it.

You can outsmart them and/or legitmately get high level stuff yourself at low-level to beat them - it's quite satisfying actually and usually they're rubbish any way which is why they do it, they're too scared to invade higher up because they know they'll get their ass handed to them 95% of the time. I have several characters @ around SL25 where I haven't killed any bosses specifically because I want to do co-op and be invaded early anywhere early game (Burg/Parish/Blighttown/Depths) - when they get blasted with great combustion from a maxed out pyro glove + dusk crown/bellowing ring combo, they shit themselves, you can see them panic and run! It's a hoot griefing the griefers! XD

i wanted to yell through the screen (and back in time) when you spent the first 20 minutes not locked on and therefore dying to the asylum demon, and again when lit the bonfire but didnt sit at it. if it is any consolation, now that you know the way you should be able to get back there pretty quickly. i cant play the game for the first time anymore, but in watching others play for the first time i can sorta remember what it was like.

Yeah massive school boy errors, especially the bonfire. I would have been clueless if not for the stream support.

Gone have another blast in a few hours, I'll throw the stream up again for you guys.

I still have no idea how to do the falling attach.

Not sure why but I can't get into the chat.
Your amor seems heavy you don't seem to be locking on enemies and dealing with them one by one.

Yea you are not locking on to enemies, thats why your strikes are missing the target

Thank you for the advice. Do I need to upgrade Havels armor, or can I just put it on and go? I just didn't want to waste upgrade materials.

It might be a typo. I have it enchanted at +4 (the highest is +5 with the blue slab correct?)

I don't usually bother upgrading armour, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Enchanted +4 hmmm. I'm not sure how much damage that is doing for you wiki says it scales B with INT at +4, which isn't amazing but it might be decent since you probably have high INT if you're a magic user, but you might want to test it against the damage of a +15 with buff. You could buy another one from Shiva if you don't have a spare.

Didn't think till now, but what I love for bosses is the Power Within pyromancy. Slap it on at the start of the fight and just tank. The damage boost with dusk crown and bellowing ring is almost too good - Good luck!

LOL, was running around anor londo dressed as Havel when some magic spamming invader shows up. I just blocked all of his spells with my shield and took virtually no damage. He looked dumbfounded.
