LTTP: MGS V ground zeroes..gameplay is amazing

The tight controls, the fluidity and movement as you traverse the environment. Being sneaky but also changing to full on scale gun attack is a lot of fun.

In previous MGS i would get annoyed when getting caught, since the shooting tends to not be as fun. But in GZ i don't really mind, its just as fun to gun and run, and escape, or eliminate everyone, or just sneak or be creative.

Design is at its best. I can't wait to see more balancing and refinement of the control plus extra skills and tools.

With all that in play, the fantastic presentation and music. Stellar VO
Ocellit
and atmosphere. I can only be excited about boss battles and doing more open ended missions in TPP.

GZ is an awesome Demo. I am glad i paid top dolla for it.

To me it's like the MGS2 demo that came with ZOE, except this one was cheaper. It was such a leap from the previous installment in the gameplay department. I got so much out that small demo.

Yes ! best gameplay mechanics in the series, never had trouble playng the old mgs games, but Gz controls the best and i cant wait to fulton sheeps and invade your motherbases !

lol

I feel like there needs to be more ways to distract guards. Like knocking, throwing a rock (far cry lol). The only way i found was to shoot something behind them with a silenced weapon.

Big Boss can spin his robo hand in TTP to distract enemies.

I'm not joking

You can throw empty magazines to make sounds. Snake has an unlimited amount equipped.

Knocking will be an option in TPP, you can see it in the E3 demos.

*Edit: Also wanted to say, yeah, the gameplay in GZ is spectacular. The stealth is incredibly dynamic, it feels more open than any other stealth game I can name. Big Boss' movements and animations are so fluid, and the controls have been fine tuned to perfection. The more I've played it the more I've come to appreciate it. Add in the size and scope of TPP and you have recipe for a masterpiece here. Really looking forward to it.

How about this?

Don't worry there will be TONS of ways to fuck around with the enemy.

Yes, OP. For all the shit Metal Gear gets for "being a movie" the gameplay in these games is actually pretty awesome, regardless of the game/cutscene ratio. Better than most games that try to cut down on the use of cutscenes.

i wonder how many tools we will get in TPP

-Cardboard Box (various levels with new features)

- various arms with different abilities

- gaseous snake decoys

anything else im missing

So good.

Also so good to fight your way out of a situation.

Edit:
I threw together a 5 minute vid a while back, mostly to mess around with sharefactory.

But I think it shows some of the game mechanics. Sneaking and guns blazing.

https://youtu.be/U3MmqxC1N7o

It's a little long, but it ends with some melee and shooting action.

I'd say they almost perfected stealth mechanics.
You are finally given near complete freedom of movement and true sandbox mechanics, with a range of tools you can use at your advantage that's bound to become much bigger with TPP.
IA that makes sense for the most part, or at least doesn't display any jarring mistake and doesn't drag you out of context.

I sadly completely suck at the game: I don't have the patience anymore, and i'm sure i'll rip through MGSVTPP guns blazing, eager to trigger the next cutscene/story bit asap...what a waste of a good game for me.

Traversal of ledges and the like is still pretty finicky. Blacklist controls far better but then again it doesn't have quite the same functions as GZ.

Ground Zeroes was sold separately because it's the last game we properly play as Big Boss. Some weird things are gonna happen in TPP and with rumors of the whole head transplant thing floating around, I wouldn't be surprised if during the 9 year coma, Big Boss has had his head transplanted onto the body of, who knows, Gray Fox or something weird like that, knowing Kojima. He did say that GZ will play slightly differently to TPP, further strengthening the "two Snakes" theory and the idea that Snake in TPP is 'different' to who we play as in GZ. The operation could be the reason why we see all the nightmarish visions and hallucinations in the first TPP trailer. His brain is fried. There's no denying there's something very 'off' with the character this time around besides the obvious 'replacement' of voice actor.

If all this sounds too far fetched, let me remind you that this is the series where Ocelot has Liquid Snakes arm grafted onto his stump...and it takes him over. Well, until MGS4 when you realize he underwent psycho-therapy or something. Point is, as absurd as this all sounds in text, it'll more than likely be executed wonderfully.

Back on topic though - I loved GZ. It was an enjoyable experience that also benefited from one of the best PC ports in recent memory! It played great, sounded great, looked great. Top notch. Can't wait for TPP.

would that be the gaf consensus, that Blacklist controls better then GZ...

i feel like it would be hard to compare the games

Oh.. tough call. I love Balcklist, and before GZ came out i wanted Kojima to take a look at that game and make MGS more like it. From design to animations, to interactions i think Blacklist set a new standard.

MGS takes a lot of that and refines it. It still doesn't have as many takedowns as sam. BUt you can still execute well thought plans and make them work as intended. Thats the beauty of Blacklist, you can always improvise and it works. I think its the same for GZ.

Thats what makes it fun imo.

there is no way that were not playing as big boss.

I think there's an unannounced character we will playing as. The one that Kaz looks at in the hospital and says, "what about him"

Yeah as I said because there's so many extra functions in GZ they can't really be compared in most regards. But ledge traversal definitley can be compared though.

PythonSelkan is that you?

finally bought ground zeroes on PSN and started to play it..wow the gameplay mechanics and control is some of the best i have ever seen, everything just feels "right".. walking, crawling, every intricate part of the game works perfectly. i see the only criticisms of the game have been the length, because the gameplay is top notch

in fact, i can't think of many games of 2014-2015 that have as good as gameplay as Ground Zeroes had... this is definitely the best playing mgs game, and one of the best playing games out their

Yup, KojiPro finally made game that any western fan of TPS games can controll without any issues. Controlls are so tight, intuitive and can easily support stealth, action and improvisation.

Can't wait for a full game.

Ground Zeroes is the best infiltration and rescue mission I've ever played...

But, I have to say that it would lose 100% of its tension if you can just Fulton enemies, equipment, and even the POWs without any meaningful consequence.

Seriously, when even doing that is a blast, you know you're onto a winner.

Kiefer, you're a pirate, man.

I think there's an unannounced character we will playing as. The one that Kaz looks at in the hospital and says, "what about him"

I'm inclined to agree. Until I see that 'doctor' post legit irrefutable legal action against Konami, I'm beginning to think GAF stumbled on something very incredible. It's either the biggest coincidence ever, or one of the most elaborate, inventive, and creative ruses that successfully managed to not only fool gamers, but scientists and the general public alike. And knowing who's heading the project, it's not too far of a stretch to buy into the latter. As for your statement about the hospital scene with Kaz saying "what about him" Kojima turned round and said it was supposed to be us, as the audience. I don't buy that for one second. Metal Gear Solid doesn't directly talk to the player in it's cutscenes (with the exception of some forth wall breaking) but never in a proper trailer that contains pivotal parts of the games story. Maybe it's the body you get transplanted onto! Who knows?

PythonSelkan is that you?
Not familiar with who that is on here (I'd know them if I saw the avatar perhaps) but hey, it's good fun. I often feel the road to a MGS release is more exciting than the game itself. :)

It was fun and definitely has gotten me excited for MGS V.

The funny thing about these threads though is I remember how people were reacting to the way the game played when it was first talked about (I think it was an IGN article?) there were quite a few people losing their shit over it because of the slow motion and X-Ray vision, claiming the series was becoming just another TPS game. Glad to see it's proven itself.

I won't deny that all the controls in ground zeros felt nice, but I had a lot of trouble finding the fun in the game. I'll grant you, stealth games aren't typically my thing, but I went through the entire thing at was just sort of, "ok, I just played through that... cool". I actually found my reaction sort of strange given the praise the game gets.

Ground Zeroes feels like the proper execution of what Kojima was trying to do with MGS4 - make a Metal Gear Solid that controlled like something western audiences were more accustomed to. Although the automatic cover can be a tad fidgety at times. It controls fantastically well. Almost everything just feels so natural - which is something I never thought I'd say about a Metal Gear game's controls.

I've put well over 50 hours into messing around in Ground Zeroes, and it got me super hyped for MGSV

Yeah. There's no way they'd address the player in a cutscene. But if they do, I'll be hugely disappointed.

If this is the game where big boss finally becomes darth vader, maybe it's best experienced through the eyes of another character. when I first saw the trailer with snake walking around the burned bodies, I immediately knew he had done it somehow.

It would he more impactful, to me, to witness big boss do some terrible shit vs the game making me do it as him.

"ok, I just played through that... cool" is not enough for a game with deep gameplay mechanics. That would be like playing through Devil May Cry and Bayonetta on normal once and calling it a day.

Check out youtube and see all the creative ways that the missions can be handled in. The game is like a play ground where you can go nuts due to the depth of the mechanics.

I enjoyed GZ. I've found that Sniper Elite 3 has been a fun MG (sort of) substitute until MGSV hits for real.

Sounds like I need to play Blacklist too. I've yet to play it.

If Big Boss actually gets his head transplanted to another body it will be the dumbest thing I have seen in gaming in terms of story.

There was a thread that asked about our go to games for when we just want to chill... it's definitely ground zeroes. I think i put like 35 hours at the very least. Such a fun game. Controls are flawless, traversal is flawless... this is gonna make for a very good multiplayer game.

Yeah, $40 was a bit much for that amount of content, but Ground Zeroes works extremely well as a demo for Phantom Pain.

Since MGS4 and Peace Walker they finally figured out a good control setup for 3D Metal Gear, but what's significant about Ground Zeroes is its open-ended level and mission design. It feels more like a western Stealth game -- like Chaos Theory or even Thief in terms of how its missions can play out.

Damn fun game. I ended up buying all three versions, so to speak. The PS3 version on day one, the PS4 version a few weeks later when I got that console, and finally the PC version when it came out.

I ended up putting somewhere around 30-40 hours between them all, 100% the PS4 and PC versions.

Man, it looks so good on PC, and runs so well. I hate that Phantom Pain is coming to PC two weeks after consoles... but as I have proven in the past, I will end up buying both.

Controls and movement were generally great, but its greatness made a few shortcomings stand out more.

I really didn't like that continuing to move the joystick after diving would make Snake stand back up. If you're moving (pushing the joystick), hit the dive button and continue to hold the joystick in the direction you want to crawl, Snake will stand back up. You have to dive, let go of the joystick, then start pushing it again to crawl without standing back up.

It's small, but there are times when I really just want to immediately start crawling as guards are approaching. Even though there's a way around it, there's no need for moving the joystick (not clicking in on the joystick) to ever be tied to stance changing. It's more reliable to keep that all tied to face buttons.

Rolling controls were also bad. I had to practice doing that repeatedly at the beginning of the mission just to do it. Forget doing it on the fly.

The first time I played it and it told me to find
Paz
through audio cues in the tape the mind was blown. If MGSV hits with more ideas like that, good god.

Such an amazing use of the little sandbox there.
