LTTP: Thief (Gold) - Or how some games don't click until you really try

Yeah you should! I had them on the backlog for way too long. Expected a good game for sure but it still surpassed my expectations.

As some have said it runs out of the box, but I recommend the TFix Lite to improve the experience while keeping it as close as possible to vanilla.

Also! Very important, make sure you have some sort of sound hardware emulation to be able to enable EAX. It sure makes a difference in this game.
Nice one TintoConCasera TintoConCasera

Installed Tfix, runs like a charm, I'll get stuck in later

Hell yeah! Have fun man. I struggled a bit on the first mission but once I understood how everything works it was smooth sailing.

And thanks for the gold man! Really appreciate it. 🫂

Thief is one of the GOATs. Fun fact: In Germany, the first two games (and these are the only ones that really matter, tbh) were called "The Dark Project" because marketing feared that Germans could not pronounce "Thief". And they were (and still are) totally right on the money.

Definitely a GOAT tier stealth game. This and Splinter Cell are kings.

I had no idea The Dark Mod was a thing before this thread though, holy shit

The Dark Mod
Damn man, I just checked that and what the hell, a full Thief game by the community based on the DOOM 3 engine? And with over a hundred of community made missions? Hell yeah, guess I have enough Thief to play until I fucking die lol.

Yeah it really takes you back to the good old days with them controls :messenger_tears_of_joy:

PC community when they love a game they're truely something else with mods.

Lol yeah, that took some time getting into. If it helps, here's how I set it up:
- Inventory items selection: mouse 4 and 5
- Unselect item: X
- Unselect weapon (sheathe): mouse 3
- Drop item (kinda important at times to not make too much noise): R

The rest are the obvious ones anyone would choose.

Hell yeah it is. Stuff like The Dark Mod, Archolos, Enderal... there are amazing people out there doing great stuff with mods for sure.

Did Thief Gold ever release on consoles or is it playable with controller? I'm looking for games to play on my retro emulator console and I always wanted to play this game as a kid! :)

Still a PC exclusive all those years later.

That said, it's a game from 1998 which should run in any modern-day toaster. If you have a laptop lying around you could install the game there, plug it to your TV, grab whatever gamepad you have and play it! The controls aren't too complicated nor require a ton of precision, so you should be able to play it with a gamepad just fine.

Playing the System Shock 2 Remaster this last week has me wanting to delve into other stuff, like Thief, that I never played back in the day and that I haven't committed to learning well enough to get over that initial hump. Just a completely incredible era for games, though one that requires a bit more patience and commitment.

Fun fact, System Shock 2 and the Thief games share a lot of code and even some animations, like the one where the guards are looking for you with their weapon drawn is the same in System Shock 2.

Might be the best time to try and jump in, should feel kinda similar to SS2.

Their games might be old, but pretty much any game related to Looking Glass Tech are solid.

For its time, those Ultima Underworld games were insanely high tech great RPGs. Never solved UU 1 as I got stuck. It was the sign of the times where you can get into an impasse if you messed up. And I couldnt get through door or gate on one of the later levels with fire and lava everywhere as I was missing a key. Gave up. lol. But I solved UU 2.

Replaying this lately by the way, your thread inspired me

I had forgotten so much of it

Goddamn the maps are so damn good in this game. I just did "the sword" with that insane fucking house and it was bliss. They don't make maps like this anymore.

Going to play this after I finish Blood Omen, it's finally time to get it on the Steam Deck with TFix.

Nightdive just did the remaster for SS2 and since that runs on the same engine, I think it's quite possible that they remaster both Thief I and II.

That said... is there anything there to remaster at all? I'm playing the game with the Lite version of TFix and don't feel like I'm missing out on any potential improvements.

I'm amazed that there aren't really any other games like this. I can think of MGS or Dishonored, but those games give you so many tools that put you on adventage against your enemies that it makes those games to be not near as tense as Thief.

Maybe Hitman? Never really played those.
You should try Splinter Cell franchise

Wasn't new dark possible and all the fixes because of one mysterious French guy shared a Source Code for System Shock or whatever? I seem to recall that.

Time to replay Thief and Dishonoured 1&2. Been a couple of years.

Absolutely a genre defining game was Thief. Not only did it set a blueprint for others to follow on from, but it still holds up incredibly well itself.

Special game indeed.

How Nightdrive haven't picked it up for a release is rather mind blowing to me.

Exactly. The moment you consider that you can give players lethal or non lethal paths it's when the design falls apart, it will always be on your mind during development. That's why I don't consider Dishonored really a successor to Thief.

Thief started and never strayed from forcing the player to be stealthy.

I very much agree with this. I love Dishonoured, but would have vastly preferred if it was more restrictive (maybe wrong way of putting it), and more Thief than it actually is.

I'm looking to finally go down the rabbit hole of community maps now. Have been meaning to check many of them out for years. I have a feeling I'm going to be very spoilt for choice.

Then we have The Dark Project engine and its community maps. Hundreds of hours of Thief. Fucking awesome. Can't wait to dive in.

Try the huge expansion I think it was called Thief 2X.

No controller support for the first two games, sadly. The Dark Project mod engine does. I believe that is based on the Doom 3 engine and Thief 3. Huge library of custom maps that can be downloaded from within the game itself. I for one am very much looking forward to diving into that.

Another reason I'm surprised Nightdrive haven't had a crack at a Thief 1&2 release. It would bring a lot of players that can't get along with Keyboard & mouse to the games.

Papi tintoconcasera, the game doesnt have controller support right? I just cant enjoy a game with keyboard and mouse
I think it sort of does! In any case, you could try using Steam Input to emulate K&M controls with the gamepad.

You thought that was crazy?

Just wait till you play the 2nd level of "The Black Parade Mod". This will kick you in the nuts you're gonna feel it lasting after you finish it.

I think there's still a chance that Nightdive may revive Thief 1 & 2 (and maybe even 3). It's high on the official wishlist and KEX Engine should be able to handle that (since it was able to handle SS2).

If they did, the one thing they absolutely must do is to change the crazy bouncy physics on Garrett. Or better yet, do a System Shock style remake. This would win a lot more fans as it will provide more Quality-of-Life features that may put them off the classics.

Considering Thief IP is now owned by Embracer it may mean Aspyr may be the one handling it. Unfortunately

Man, I was so certain I responded here before, but apparently I've done so in some other thread where OP went through the same revelation as you.
There's plenty of great mods that should make it easier to get into Thief 1 and 2. They are quite hardcore, but gameplay still holds up very well if you like true stealth.

Thief Definitive Edition is free on GOG, via Amazon Prime

Too bad new Thief game is VR only. And it seems more like continuation of reboot. At least we will get Garrett voiced by Stephen Russell as new "The Eye", I think - check the end of the video.

But I still have mixed feelings about it.
