LTTP: Thief (Gold) - Or how some games don't click until you really try

Yeah you should! I had them on the backlog for way too long. Expected a good game for sure but it still surpassed my expectations.

As some have said it runs out of the box, but I recommend the TFix Lite to improve the experience while keeping it as close as possible to vanilla.

Also! Very important, make sure you have some sort of sound hardware emulation to be able to enable EAX. It sure makes a difference in this game.
Nice one TintoConCasera TintoConCasera

Installed Tfix, runs like a charm, I'll get stuck in later

Thief is one of the GOATs. Fun fact: In Germany, the first two games (and these are the only ones that really matter, tbh) were called "The Dark Project" because marketing feared that Germans could not pronounce "Thief". And they were (and still are) totally right on the money.

The Dark Mod
Damn man, I just checked that and what the hell, a full Thief game by the community based on the DOOM 3 engine? And with over a hundred of community made missions? Hell yeah, guess I have enough Thief to play until I fucking die lol.

Hell yeah! Have fun man. I struggled a bit on the first mission but once I understood how everything works it was smooth sailing.
Yeah it really takes you back to the good old days with them controls :messenger_tears_of_joy:

And thanks for the gold man! Really appreciate it. 🫂

Lol yeah, that took some time getting into. If it helps, here's how I set it up:
- Inventory items selection: mouse 4 and 5
- Unselect item: X
- Unselect weapon (sheathe): mouse 3
- Drop item (kinda important at times to not make too much noise): R

The rest are the obvious ones anyone would choose.

PC community when they love a game they're truely something else with mods.
Hell yeah it is. Stuff like The Dark Mod, Archolos, Enderal... there are amazing people out there doing great stuff with mods for sure.

Did Thief Gold ever release on consoles or is it playable with controller? I'm looking for games to play on my retro emulator console and I always wanted to play this game as a kid! :)

Still a PC exclusive all those years later.

That said, it's a game from 1998 which should run in any modern-day toaster. If you have a laptop lying around you could install the game there, plug it to your TV, grab whatever gamepad you have and play it! The controls aren't too complicated nor require a ton of precision, so you should be able to play it with a gamepad just fine.

Playing the System Shock 2 Remaster this last week has me wanting to delve into other stuff, like Thief, that I never played back in the day and that I haven't committed to learning well enough to get over that initial hump. Just a completely incredible era for games, though one that requires a bit more patience and commitment.

Fun fact, System Shock 2 and the Thief games share a lot of code and even some animations, like the one where the guards are looking for you with their weapon drawn is the same in System Shock 2.

Might be the best time to try and jump in, should feel kinda similar to SS2.

Their games might be old, but pretty much any game related to Looking Glass Tech are solid.

For its time, those Ultima Underworld games were insanely high tech great RPGs. Never solved UU 1 as I got stuck. It was the sign of the times where you can get into an impasse if you messed up. And I couldnt get through door or gate on one of the later levels with fire and lava everywhere as I was missing a key. Gave up. lol. But I solved UU 2.
