LTTP: Wes Anderson makes awesome movies (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr Fox)

Never watched a Wes Anderson movie before, and had never really been interested. Decided to check out Grand Budapest Hotel after seeing all the praise and I really enjoyed it. Whimsical, charming, funny, great performances throughout, an interesting story, and just a great film.

But as much as I enjoyed Grand Budapest, I enjoyed Fantastic Mr Fox even more. Between The BFG, The Witches, The Magic Finger, etc. I have fond memories of Dahl's books, although I actually never read Fox. I'm not even much of a fan of animated or stop motion films, but wow, was the movie excellent. From the great humor and great voice acting to the wonderful animation and inventive cinematography, I loved every minute of Fantastic Mr Fox.

now you have to watch the following movies

The Royal Tenenbaums
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Moonrise Kingdom
The Darjeeling Limited

start with the first two
I still haven't watched Rushmore

Early stuff like The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou I never really enjoyed as much as other people seemed to (it's that subjective visceral thing; if it doesn't make you laugh it's not funny for you) but did appreciate them as interesting

But The Fantastic Mr Fox I loved

Moonrise Kingdom I loved ... for me it seemed like I finally 'got' him, and Grand Budapest Hotel I loved too (especially the prison break)

All great films, the attention to detail is staggering you'll always notice something new every time you watch.

Last year I decided to check out the films I hadn't seen of his before. His filmography is incredibly solid I pretty much enjoyed everything he's done. Can't say that for alot of Directors around.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is my favorite too and I've seen most of his filmography.

I think his quirky style really fits an animated film. The movie is a great combination of great visuals, nice story, humor, voice acting and also an awesome soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat.

Mr Fox and Budapest are both magnificent films. The square framing in Budapest, along with the vivid, heightened colours made it such a treat to watch, quite aside from its other charms.

I may have to look into his other work, as suggested in this thread!

One of my favorite directors.

Mr. Fox
Life Aquatic
Moonrise
Budapest

Are among my favorite films of him. The score for life aquatic is fantastic.

His style is certainly grating to some, but I like it quite a bit.

Best movies:
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Rushmore
Royal Tenenbaums
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Pretty Decent:
Moonrise Kingdom

Not that good:
Life Aquatic
Darjeeling Limited

Haven't Seen:
Bottle Rocket

I'm still not sure where I stand with Anderson. Life Aquatic was fucking awful, Grand Budapest was ok, Moonrise Kingdom was pretty good and The Royal Tenebaums is absolutely fantastic. I'll probably have to give his other movies a watch. He's at least always interesting.

Start at the beginning with Bottle Rocket and go through all of them. You really won't find a bad movie on his resume. Though Darjeeling Limited is probably his weakest effort.

Life Aquatic was amazing

Just watched Grand Budapest a few days ago and I absolutely loved it. Anyone who has not seen Bottle Rocket or Rushmore is missing out as well. I can't think of a movie he has made that I didn't enjoy. Although I have not seen Darjeeling Limited.

Just caught Grand Budapest Hotel and really loved it. The Life Aquatic was wonderful also. I just love the worlds that Anderson creates. As I work my way through his filmography, he's steadily becoming one of my favorite directors. I have the blurays of The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore to consume next!

I love his movies, I'll have to check out fantastic Mr Fox I didn't know he made that. The Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite I think. It was shot down the street from where I grew up.

the life aquatic is my favourite, but most of his stuff is great.

. I haven't seen Bottle Rocket, The Darjeeling Limited, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. The last I am hesitant to watch because its all stop motion animation and I really don't like that type of animation. I saw Corpse Bride which was alright but it looks a lot different then say Mr. Fox or those Wallace and Gromit movies.

Fantastic Mr. Fox remains my favorite of his, but Grand Budapest Hotel isn't far off.

I'll have to check out Mr. Fox again, I must admit it didn't strike me as particularly good the first and only time I saw it, while being a W. Anderson admirer myself...

I love the Fantastic Mr. Fox. I have a terrible habit of always quoting one line. When someone asks me "Can I (something something)?" I always reply with "You may". I really got to quit doing that...

You're a big guy.
All of his movies are fantastic, with the exception of The Fantastic Mr Fox, which feels too alien and disconnected for me to truly enjoy.

His best films are; The Royal Tenenbaums (I've seen it over ten times, the "Can the boy tell time?" bit cracks me up every time) , GBH, Moonrise Kingdom and Darjeeling Limited. Probably in that order, but ask me tomorrow and I'll give a different answer.

Rushmore is good, but you can tell he is still learning the ropes. Plus the second act is baggy and unenjoyable. The ending is beautifully executed though.

Life Aquatic is a the hardest film of his to gauge. It has a more mellow, tranquil vibe to it. Seu Jorge's performances throughout contribute enormously to the film's washed up tone (and Mark Mothersbaugh's videogamey music is incredible in a completely different way) but the film just lacks something to make it truly great. I've never quite put my finger on it, but I think it is slightly too apathetic and detached. Claus only goes so far in this regard. The action scenes are just wonderful, though.

As it goes, there are lots of significant stylistic differences between his films. He retains his distinctive, auteur style, but compare Darjeeling Limited with Grand Budapest Hotel and with Moonrise Kingdom. Very, very different looking and feeling films.

I'm conflicted on Wes Anderson.

I think he goes overboard on the twee. It doesn't bother me too much if the story stays grounded, but if it doesn't, the movie goes off the rails and starts annoying the hell out of me.

I'd say Moonrise Kingdom found a good balance, but Grand Budapest definitely went off the rails.

Mecklemore Is My Favorite Wrapper
Rushmore is, depending on the day of the week, my favorite movie of all time. So much charm, wit and emotion packed into a film that still feels like his best balance between the actual world and the world that only ever existed in Anderson's head. It had an enormous impact on me as a teenager. OP, you should definitely watch that one next.

I dont understand his movies, I think they're terrbly boring and overrated.

Life Aquatic and Royal Tennenbaums bored me to tears. Seems like movies only arthouse type elists would enjoy lol.

I've enjoyed most all of his movies, though I think The Royal Tenenbaums is his best. Fantastic Mr. Fox always cracks me up though; even watching it on mute makes me laugh.

Darjeeling Limited is the only film of his I didn't like, it felt too forced. I also thought Moonrise Kingdom was kind of boring though it was nice to see Bruce Willis acting again.

I don't really like him that much. His first movie I watched was Life Aquatic, and I absolutely loved it. Then I watched Tenenbaums and hated it. I honestly haven't watched anything else from him but based on trailers and previews, he seems to have a Tim Burton thing going; Beetlejuice was fun and really different, but then he just keeps doing the same thing over and over.

Never realised Fantastic Mr Fox and The Grand Budapest Hotel were by the same guy! Loved both of them so I need to check out these other films you guys listed too.

What?

How on earth is Tenenabaums anything like The Life Aquatic?

Or Fantastic Mr Fox or Grand Budapest or Darjeeling Limited?

I mean, like whatever you want but he does not keep making the same film over and over.

I do think they kinda share the same vibe. It's kinda hard to describe, but I mainly atrribute it to the dialog and the way it is delivered. But I don't that's a bad thing nor do I agree that it's anywhere close to Burton's level of sameness.

If you haven't seen The Royal Tenenbaums or The Life Aquatic, then you have some great movie watching to do. Love both of these films to death. Moonrise Kingdom was also good, but not as great as the two above.

Did not like Rushmore, Darjeeling Limited or Bottle Rocket nearly as much as the above.

I have Grand Budapest on order from Amazon and haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox yet.

But seriously, watch The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic. They are amazing.

Love:
Fantastic Mr Fox
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Life Aquatic

Like:
Bottle Rocket
Moonrise Kingdom

Did Not Like:

Rushmore
The Darjeeling Limited

I don't get it when people say his movies are all the same. He's certainly got a recognizable thing going but so what? I can recognize a Terrence Malick movie instantly too. Or Michael Bay. Or Scorsese.
