Apparently the longest ban the FIFA can punish him with in this case is 24 games or 24 months. I think he should get the full duration. Set an example. This is not in the spirit of the game, fuck, this is not in the spirit of human interaction.

Someone else put it well: in any other walk of life, you'd be facing police action for this.

Skipping a handshake with a black man is a problem obviously, but I dislike how people make it seem that skipping a handshake is forgiveable or even acceptable unless its based on race, sex, or sexual preference. I get that these are things that are big issues, but skipping a handshake and poor sportsmanship in general are the source of all this and its not being addressed. You cant give passes out for certain things but not others. I've said before, skipping a handshake with a black man is a branch of the tree of poor sportsmanship. If you want to get rid of skipping a handshake with a black man, you cant address it just by cutting the branch off.

LOL

so someone made a foul and got a deserved red card and walked away. wow that behaviour, uruguay truly is scum

what are you even doing? when did I call maxi pereira a victim?

I'm just highlighting why this team is so unlikeable and why they give the rest of the world reason to root against them.

It wasn't the handshake. He said this to Evra:

Evra:Why did you kick me?
Suarez:Because you're black.
Evra: say it to me again, I’m going to punch you.
Suarez: I don't speak to blacks
Evra:I'm going to punch you,
Suarez: okay, blackie, blackie, blackie

(Evra interpreted "negro" in spanish as nigger - not that it makes it less loathsome.")

Perfecto.

And he's the captain of the Uruguayan team, so he speaks on behalf of Uruguay. Plus he's human so he speaks on behalf of the homo sapiens.

I think the anger of Italy's loss amongst this is getting to people's heads.

I think you're missing something, people aren't angry because Italy lost (we're on an American board if you missed it, most of the people here are happy because Italy is out or they don't care at all), people are angry because Suarez once again behaved like an animal.

The handball itself might not compare to the rest of it, but how he behaved there was a clear extension of his terrible mentality on a whole. Not only did he have no qualms with breaking the rules, but he was unrepentant, and knowing that his illegal actions resulted in victory after Ghana missed the penalty, he had no problems with celebrating openly. He's a sick, sick man. :(

To be fair 99.9% of football players would do the same. One of the best players of all time (Maradona) scored a goal with his hand on purpose on a World Cup final. Rather than being ashamed, he (and his whole country) call it one of the best moments in football history and the hand of god.

That kind of mentality btw is why Portugal was able to tie the US. The US team played much, much better, but they were way too naive in the end. Did you see how Uruguay defended their lead against Italy? At the 90 minute mark there was a free kick for Uruguay near their goal. I actually timed this, it took them more than 50 seconds to execute it. When you have 5 minutes of extra time, gaining 50 seconds can easily be the difference between winning or losing. Their goalie got a yellow card, which was even better for them, since they lost even more time.

That's just how the game is played on the big leagues. You might not agree with it, I certainly don't, but you have to respect that kind of commitment. Until FIFA does something to fix those problems, it will continue to be how the game is played.

Watching football/soccer players fall over and do that infantile head grab thing to make them look like they just got hit hard never fails to make me roll my eyes. Apparently having some dignity doesn't net them any bonus points.

Won't happen, this is FIFA we're talking about. Not sure if Chiellini's post-match comments on it were legit or not but if so then he says it as it is. FIFA want to have Suarez and all other stars playing regardless of what negative things they do. We've had fishy play-off draws for finals before among many other things, nothing will surprise me.

Well played, sir. Well played.

*slow clap*

Pretty much.

5 year ban from football, no criminal charges.

lol, did the other white shirt guy come in on the right side and start to step on his leg?

Suarez is a real sack of shit. Biting people on the pitch. Making racist remarks on the pitch. Blocking goal scoring shots with his hand. Just an all round unpleasant person. Sad thing is, he's really talented at playing the actual game too, but he seems to want people to remember him for his displays of inhumanity instead.

There is nothing wrong with that, i also dont think that he is a pice of shit, but he really needs help, mental health help

They still beat England fair and square though.

Maybe. They should have been a man down which probably would have changed the outcome of the game. Coincidentally, the player who should have been given a red fairly early in the England game (Diego Godin) ended up scoring the winner in the Italy match. He really shouldn't have been on the pitch for this game.

Suárez just bit himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about football culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is with boxing where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over with football you bring shame to yourself and your country, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the public, after hearing about this, is that they are not going to want Suàrez to play for the rest of the WC, nor will they support the Uruguayan team. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Suàrez has alienated his entire country with this move.

Suàrez, publicly apologize and accept your ban from the FIFA or you can kiss your business goodbye.

this is a worthless game everyone plays in the WC

same way if we win the WC now a fraction of the public is gonna go "oh but it doesnt count cause Suarez tried to bite that guy" even tho he did jack shit in this match in terms of us winning it

saying "well it wasnt fair cause X player should have gotten a red THUS he shouldnt have been in X game at all" is just yadda yadda

we won against England and we won against Italy and we deserved both. Suarez being a shitcunt is another thing entirely. There were many instances of shit plays not called that would have benefited us too in every game till now. That's just how it works.

Can someone explain why this sort of thing doesn't result in criminal charges?

Playing in a sports tournament is usually seen by Courts as consent to be the victim of an assault...they also realise that sports usually have internal mechanisms for dealing with such behaviour and rarely get involved.

How is that remotely related to him being a piece of racist psycho shit? He blocked the shot, accepted the red. Took a fall for the team.

Physical altercations in the field of play rarely end in criminal charges. Discipline is usually meted out by the sports bodies.

I'm wondering if that's part of their collective bargaining agreements with their unions... for a lot of sports. Though, when it gets egregious enough, the law will step in, regardless of how the league wants something treated.

Some people will excuse a whole lot of shit in football, but a handball is sacrilege. I don't know why, but I've seen that as a recurring theme in these discussions about various players.

The eyes of the world are on FIFA for this.

The allegations of corruption are already strong and have become louder in recent years as more and more instances have surfaced. They can't protect Suarez here, not with the cameras providing the clear-cut evidence. He'd be convicted in any courtroom.

Well, hockey has been using assault as its main draw for nearly a century now.

Two fans fight in stands, jail........two players fight on ice, applause.

Those incidents are at least consensual. Some States even have "mutual combat." There's some youtube vid of a guy fighting a "superhero" vigilante with cops watching.

Bertuzzi and McSorely have faced criminal charges in fairly recent history for cheap shotting and stick-work respectively.

I don't see how Suarez trying to bite someone has anything to do with Uruguay winning the game. It's not like that incident altered the course of the match in any way. Uruguay deserved it because italy failed to shift into the 6th gear early on, they always start to fight too late and it's not always working out for them.
I also hated the fact that every 2nd italian player kept diving every second minute of the match. Some dives were ridiculous, like no body contact at all yet they kept acting all injured and sh*t.

I agree that he should be punished but it's not like Uruguay wouldn't have won the game without that incident.

Red Card would have changed everything.

Personally, he hasn't learned anything from the past. The only way for his actions to count, I honestly feel Uruguay should be eliminated and Italy allowed to go through..

MOST players bite other players. It's a normal part of the beautiful game. Also slow-mo headbutts and nard-grabs.

It wasn't the handshake. He said this to Evra:

Evra:Why did you kick me?
Suarez:Because you're black.

So Suarez is a racist cannibal. Fuck this guy, I hope he gets the maximum penalty.

Yep, the handshake incident was afterwards and before the game both clubs had essentially ordered their players to shake hands to help diffuse the situation. So he ignored his clubs request and inflamed the situation even more. :/
