Mac Hardware and Software |OT| - All things Macintosh

Hi I'm trying to invest in low cost mac for some light music production.

I have the choice between this mac with upgraded 2tb drive/ssd drive and the cinema display for 400
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP506

vs
the current mac mini which is around 569

What would you recommend for a mac newbie??

Depends on the model, but $400 for a 2009 Mac Pro plus the display is a very good deal (for reference, last year I bought a 2008 2x2.8 Quad Core Mac Pro w/ a Radeon 5770 for $900, and they still go for $500+ usually on eBay depending on what aftermarket cards, memory and drives are installed.) Do you have the eBay listing?

If expandability is your goal the 2009 will stomp on the mini. But you're getting a much smaller and power-efficient device going with the latter. It's up to you to decide. If you can't wait until the next Mini refresh (probably in the fall) then I would say the Mac Pro just because there's more you can do with it and the current mini's graphics are pretty poor.

I can only presume this is about shrinking the phone to the size of Lightning, as opposed to the 1/8" minijack... but we're talking about a limit of what, 4mm? That's still basically half the thickness of a 5S now. Battery and camera lens and screen tech hasn't advanced to the point where that thinness is going to be an advantage.

I think it could also be about wearable and transmitting data between your headphone and your phone, controlling apps with your headphones and stuff like that.

I think either the lightning headphones are a specifically high-end audiophile item and that the normal 3.5mm jack will remain; or they will simply put another lightning adapter in instead of the 3.5mm jack, and offer a 3.5mm to lightning adaptor for $10.

Oh thats what I meant. 11'6".

The size doesnt matter. I just want a fast sleek laptop.

I might upgrade in the future to the new MBP in October but need something in the meantime.

Yeah that should be OK. I have no info about how well it will run Windows.

I have a 4GB 13" MBA from 2011 that still boots up and runs fast. It doesn't run as fast as my 2013 Haswell 1.7GHz i7 11" MBA with 8GB ram though. So "fast" depends upon what you are comparing it too really.

Cool, also do you know how good are Apple Refurb products?

Are they pretty much brand new and there's no problems with them?

I've only ever bought new and never had a problem with my previous purchases.

Same warranty, same product. The main difference is the box is white and you have to wait for it to arrive.

I have a very random question that's been on my mind .. is it possible that in the near future Apple will be putting something similar to the current A7 processor in their mac hardware?

Sorry if that's a stupid question!

There are rumors of a 12" MBA that is super thin and does not have a fan. It just might also run on the ARM architecture. It's possible, but it would also be a huge transition and there would be a lot of questions.

So I bought a 2013 MBP a couple weeks back.

I went from a 2010 and as a musician, I never had any speaker problems from a mac...until now.

Basically, I used my new mbp and as soon as I transferred all my itunes purchases and went straight to listening, I noticed some songs would have a sharp sound to it. Like when lyrics were sung, anything with an "s" sound would be real sharp and distorted for some reason (if that makes sense).

I called up my local apple store to see what they could do and after about a week, they replaced both speakers. I'm still getting the problem regardless and I don't feel like doing 2 more drives to get this done again so GAF, what should I do? I'm not seeing anyone else online with this problem when I google it...

I always always use external speakers unless I am away from my desk. Most of the time my 2012 rMBP is stationary on my desk. I don't know if you have golden ears and mine are not quite as refined, but I have not noticed the problem you are describing on any of my Mac laptops.

If you are worried that it is a widespread problem, you could try bringing some MP3s on a USB to an Apple store or Best buy and test some of the floor models to see if they have the same problem. Or you could try to demand a new in the box computer instead do another speaker replacement.

Let us know how it goes.

My 2009 iMac seems to be crapping out on me. It's never frozen before, but now it will freeze all the time with minimal CPU usage. And when I try to restart, the majority of the time it gets stuck on the apple screen. Safe boot usually works, but then it just freezes again. I've unplugged everything from the computer. Anyone have an idea what might be going on?

Not sure. Reset the PRAM? Do a clean install? Take it to an Apple Store? Or call Apple Support? Ask on the Apple Support Communities forum?

I wonder if we're going to get an AirPort Extreme refresh anytime soon? I would love to see what a second (third or fourth, actually, at this point) generation 802.11ac chipset could do over the early one used in the current model.

My apartment hates wireless signal, and I could really use any kind of improvement.

I do have an outdated version of VMware. Maybe I should try uninstalling software in safe boot mode.

Reinstalling didn't work. Just went back to the apple screen.

Edit, removed all non essential software, no effect

If you wiped your drive completely, and then simply reinstalled mavericks (without any of your personal stuff like from a time machine backup), and it still has problems then it's most likely a hardware issue.

Doing a clean install and then using migration assistant is sort of like not doing a clean install IMO.

Erased drive and did a clean install and nothing, still stuck on the apple screen :( at this point I guess the only option is to take it in to the apple store

Oh. If you have a bootable disk or USB version of OSX, and your computer works fine using that then it may indicate that you have a failed or failing internal hard drive.

I'm going to retry with the USB, but if that's the case I'm kind of tempted to install a new hard drive myself (and get an ssd) instead of taking it to the shop. I know that's tough with iMacs, but since the warranty is off anyways might be worth a try

edit: might just order the supplies and pay the shop the $99 labor actually

First check if this applies to you:
https://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/

Apple might replace it for free. They even sent a tech to my job to do it for me.

I've got yet another freeze on my Macbook Air 2013 and this time I've bothered looking at the console and save the log. Does anyone know what caused the freeze(s), judging from this?

I didn't see an iPhone hardware related thread, so I thought this would the most appropriate spot...

I kind of jumped in a pool and went for a leisurely swim with my wife's 3 month old iPhone 5S in my back pocket. I didn't realize this for quite some time... maybe a half hour?

Once I got out and realized it, I called Apple and set up an appointment tomorrow with my local store. The rep mentioned that it may quality for a $269 out of warranty replacement, but if it's too beat up they may opt to not replace it.

Other than the obvious water, the phone is immaculate. What are the chances that it'll qualify for the replacement? Has anyone been in a similar situation? I can live with a $269 "stupidity charge", but $600 is going to be pretty tough to swallow.

30 min in a pool is basically forever. First of all keep it turned off. You could try putting in some dry rice overnight. Consider yourself very lucky if they give you the $269 replacement.

Ugh. I kind of assumed that 30 seconds or 30 minutes in water shouldn't make that much of a difference to them... submerging is submerging.

Either way, yeah... I've put it in the requisite bowl of rice and have been too afraid to turn it on.

If the phone was turned on then 30 min is very very different from 30 sec IMO. I don't know how mix difference it would make to an employee at an apple store.

Hmm. Yeah. Even though NetFlix currently uses Silverlight, which like Flash will cause the fans to turn on, those temps seem high.

Are his fans even turning on? If they aren't, then he should definitely take it in. Because the fans should be keeping the temps down immensely.

Not sure how hot it should be getting with the fans on though. I do know they do get pretty hot even with the fans at maximum. But then again, Flash and Silverlight are shit. (Thank goodness for NetFlix's HTML5 Safari support coming with Yosemite. You won't even need Silverlight anymore.)

Yeah it kind of depends what your friend means by "overheating". If the computer shuts off or complains that it's too hot in some way then yeah take it in. If the computer just gets hot then yeah that's usually normal.

To expand on this, Silverlight is even worse than Flash in that, even in Safari, there is no GPU acceleration (unless full-screened, IIRC). Yosemite will change this by supporting non-Silverlight Netflix.

ok so the left fan doesnt seem to be working. and he says that when apple support told him to restart and it started working again but only for a moment. it idles on 55. so i decided i am not gonna take the risk and just take to apple store to get it checked out.

Just a FYI to any other would be water damagers out there:

It seems as if straight water damage is covered by Apple as an out of warranty replacement (currently $269 for 5/5S), as long as the device is in otherwise undamaged condition.

Pretty great customer service if you ask me. I'm pretty sure I'd be SOL if I submerged my Nexus 5.

My 15inch Retina Macbook Pro, sitting high on the table in my living room, headphones plugged in. I wanted to go grab my Vita and accidentally stepped on the headphones wire which are hanging all the way down and that pulled the Macbook along with it and dropped it on the floor from about 4 feet high.

I do not know why but I just felt like my heart stopped beating for a second, all upset and i did not even want to pick it up because I guessed I would be disappointed to see what would have broken.

Somehow, it was sitting on the floor, after a loud bang, just as how I'd use it while on the high desk. The screen still seems to be intact and nothing seem to be changed except for the tiny little scar on the hinge between the base and the panel on the outside.

I do not know if it had any internal damage yet but it seems to be working fine as I restarted it and GAF still works as I'm typing this post. Been using this for 6 months and I don't suppose Apple covers any accidental damage within the first year, if at all something were to happen, right?

Either way, if it is still 100%, has to be that metal casing that kept it intact because I knew if it is any other laptop, would have had a different ending and with the fact that I lucked out tonight.

Phew!!!

Yeah. I doubt they cover drop damage. But I guess you never know.

These new iMacs eh?

Not like this Apple, not like this :(

I'm a bit confused by it, personally. Soldering the RAM doesn't seem to have much of a purpose unless it's designed to pushed people up to the next model (which, considering the previous version stays where it is price-wise, doesn't seem to be too much of a factor.) A common comment I've heard regarding the Macbook Air-style i5 is that way they have an Intel HD 5000 instead of 4600, but at least from a cursory look the 5000 doesn't really seem too much better than the 4600:

http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/inde...-5000-mobile-vs-intel-hd-graphics-4600-mobile

The multi-core performance is pretty irrelevant for casual use cases, so other than that I don't see the issue with a 1.5GHz processor that will be turboing 2.7 most of the time anyhow.

The slow RPM HDD still boggles me considering at Newegg I can go from a 500GB 5400RPM drive to 500GB 7200RPM for basically $10-15.

Finally there's the price. They still didn't get it under $1000?

I guess education markets will still buy this (and still be well-served by it), but insofar as breaking into emerging markets it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.
