Mac Hardware and Software |OT| - All things Macintosh

I reinforced mine with heat shrink since I have the barrel connector and not the t-connector. Apple needs much much better strain relief. I think part of the problem is that in their quest to remove bad chemicals from their products, they've removed a few really useful bad chemicals and have made their plastic worse— newer power cables feel worse and my impression is that they are less durable than old ones— this is completely baseless supposition on my part.

Mac cables have always fucking sucked. My TiBook G4 power adapter had to be replaced 4 times due to fraying cables.

It's a combo of lack of stress relief and that soft rubbery plastic sheathing they've always used.

Well it makes sense that as Apple (and Microsoft, now) lock down the usual vectors that got everyone's grandma and the unscrupulous tormentor that impersonating or infiltrating trusted apps is the way of the future.

Yup, it makes a lot of sense unfortunately.

yeah i figured that part out... problem is device wont show in image capture. what gives?
If the phone is locked with passcode that'll block it, otherwise check cable to see if it's working right (not just charging, but an actual USB connection), and try just restarting the phone and/or computer.
Does anyone know a way to check SSD health on OSX? i bought this used drive and done a clean install and i really want to know how much the previous owner used it...
Look for SMART Utility, it's shareware but has some number of free uses. There's also other SMART viewer things but that one is simple enough.

(Just one more note, it may mark stuff as indicators of failing but that can be a bit of a fuzzy area, plus SSD SMART data isn't always consistent, hell drives in general can vary by manufacturer)

So I am thinking of finally switching from Windows to Apple, as laptop wise I seem never satisfied with what Asus, Lenovo etc have to offer.

Was looking at the 2015 Air or Retina Pro, either with 8gb of Ram, as I need it for Android Studio/Eclipse (and other dev stuff, maybe mysql etc), apart from that, I would use it for djing (Traktor), browsing, netflix, plex and not much more (no gaming). Would an Air be enough for me? (portability is also very important, but the Retina Pro is also much lighter than its predecessors right?)

So, should I get the Air, or is the Retina a lot better (for just 150€ more), or wait for whatever Apple will offer this year. Any info when their next keynote whatever will be?

As I also have no idea about the OS, is 128gb enough for what I listed? (with an combination of an external hdd). What features could I miss from windows?

Don't buy anything yet, they have an upcoming event later this month where new Macs are likely to be introduced.

Rumours point to the Air being phased out. MBP is much better than the Air. I have the 13" MBP from last year and it's a great machine.

Just hold off a bit longer. This should help.

Thank you for the response but sincerely i can't seem to understand the values that it spits out

Are these good numbers for the SSD? The guy who sold it to me told me that it only wrote not even half a Terabyte do you think that by these number it is true?

Weird. Does the iPhone charge when concerted and will iTunes try to manage it when it is connected?

The soft rubber keeps changing though. Good to know it has always been shit.

Assuming your DJ library is on external storage (perhaps even a slim SD card), then probably. I don't think that the disk usage requirements aren't dramatically different from Windows.

What features could I miss from windows?

Games, a lack of folder merging in the file manager (Finder), and then probably a lot of idiomatic things that are completely different and may prompt you to complain it isn't intuitive. Not that this has happened before.

e.g. You can cut paste files, but it is copy/move.

I think what I'm excited about the most with this year's Mac refreshes is that they might address the ridiculous storage upsell between models, decreasing the price gap, lowering the upgrade cost, etc.

The pricing of MacBooks are out of whack currently since Intel and the die-shrinks for GPUs, etc. upset Apple's "more value for the same price" model.

I'm a tech enthusiast with a coming up 3 year old MacBook, and it's really become, "Whelp, why should I upgrade?".

that thing has only been on for 22 hours, its basically brand new

Thanks. Yeah I have enough sd cards and external disks to handle big files.

Games is a non issue, the other stuff I can definitely get used to somehow.

Just ask if you have any questions. There are fairly consistent keyboard shortcuts across first and third party applications so if you're a keyboard jockey you can be very happy. If you're a cursor person, drag and drop is pervasive idiom— you can drag images and text between applications, files into applications, etc.

FWIW, I have 120GB SSDs in my work Mini and my personal MacBook Air and it's fine. I have no video on them (for watching or creation) and just use them for writing, programming, web graphics, small photography projects, and small music projects. The photo stuff is the biggest use of space.

I'm a tech enthusiast with a coming up 3 year old MacBook, and it's really become, "Whelp, why should I upgrade?".

I think it's great.

Yeah it's kind of ridiculous base storage hasn't gotten bumped in four years on the Mac notebook side and that we're still rocking 5400RPM drives. I hope they finally stop skimping and make fusion drives standard and bump the flash storage up (or at least heavily discount the upgrade cost.)

It was T-, L-, and then T- again with MagSafe 2.
I am guessing by "T" connector you mean something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008ALAAV0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2MAFBN34T8S11&coliid=I1GKBVV5Y1Q8CC

Seriously why could the cable the goes from the power supply to the laptop be detachable. That part of the cable probably costs like $5. Now I have to pay $77 for the whole thing :(.

Yep, and the L connectors were these guys.

prod_6319425929

I feel like they weren't on the market all that long... maybe 2 years? Then they switched back to the T connector with MagSafe 2. Could be misremembering things tho. They were definitely finickier and were prone to not connecting fully and hence not charging properly.

Ah I see now. Is that "L" connector more sturdier or just as prone to fraying?

I was looking on Amazon and I think I am going to do what this guy did. I do not care how it looks, but I am on my third $77 power supply, which is crazy:

Over eight years I've never needed a replacement power supply (or 30pin or Lightning cable for that matter.) My wife has burned through four iPhone connectors and a power adapter in the meantime.

Not to say that the cables couldn't use more strain relief or whatnot, but it is entirely about how you use them... :)

I seriously treat all my electronics like babies. My power supply rests on the floor by my bed 90% of the time. I think that the degree of bend between the T-connector and cable may be too much and causes the fraying.

I've gone through 5-6 Magsafe connectors in 10 years and i'm sincerely fed up of Apple not tackling the problem with more resistant plastic, aside the lack of any decent strain relief there's also the fact that in 2-3 years the plastic begins to wear out and you start to see cuts along the cord them despite not being near sharp object.

This is the only problem i have with apple products in general, their cables wear down way too fast.

Huh, out of all my apple stuff, I've only come close to replacing a 4 year old lightning cable (it still charges, but because I can see the metal sheath under the plastic coating, I've decided to not trust it to sync).

My magsafe from 2008 still presumably works and is in great condition (the laptop has since died).

Get a spring from a cheap pen and some heatshrink.

My 2010 MacBook Pro charger broke. Fuck me. I'm ready for a new one and we finally have a Mac event date by I swear if they don't announce laptops on his event I'm gonna ... ;(

Any idea were to potentially get a cheap charger for mine? Amazon has lots of awful third party knock offs. Now it seems. Strange cause a little while back I don't recall Amazon having. THAT many bag knock offs

Can someone help me figure out why my Mac is crashing?

Can someone help me figure out why my Mac is crashing?
Is this happening often, and is there anything common activity that you could link it to? Are you using AirPlay for anything when this happens?

I'm guessing from that one log something to do with graphics, and maybe something to do with AirPlay if you're using that at the time (which involves the graphics hardware if you're doing screen mirroring/extending). Could be hardware, could be software if you have some extensions that might mess with that stuff, like graphics switching software or alternative AirPlay stuff I guess.

If you have other crash logs they might help, like if they all involve CoreGraphics and AirPlay I'd lean towards that stuff, but if it's all over the place it could be something else entirely.

But all guesses! I think if you hold down D (or command D?) on boot there's a hardware test, but that's not always useful. Best thing would be if you have an Apple Store nearby (...as long as it's not one with crappy employees) and could get them to check it out.

Having major trouble downloading today's El Capitan update (10.11.4) on my 13 inch MBPr. Download quickly gets to about 615MB, then slows down and says 2+ hours left, and keeps ballooning from there (as I was typing this it got up to 5 hours remaining :l). Is this happening to anyone else? Tried restarting and everything.

I am looking at setting up an always-on Mac mini as a media server for all of my photos, movies, and music. Does anyone have any experience with them? I'm wondering if the base model's 1.4 GHz processor and 4 GB is enough for those functions. It would be hooked up to a 1080p monitor. I have external thunder bolt drives already so I'm not concerned about the internal storage.

I've resisted this long switching from Aperture to Photos, but Aperture is just too sluggish and buggy now.

I've gone over to Photos.

May god have mercy on my soul.

For a media server yeah even the entry-level Mac mini should be perfectly fine.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I want to upgrade my 1st gen 16GB iPad Air pretty badly. There's no reason for me to ever grab it, when my 6s+ is so much faster, and it's so low on space.

But man, the iPad Pro is a significant investment. I'd want cellular, so the absolute cheapest model is $730. Plus a $150 keyboard and a $100 pencil. Plus tax. We're talking a thousand dollars for a tablet, when I already have a fast and large iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.

Yes, it's got a lot more functionality than my Air. It's way faster. And the accessories aren't required. But, it's like every little thing is way overpriced.

It starts at $100 more.
There's no 64gb option, requiring a significant splurge to 128.
The cellular chip that costs $5 is a $130 upgrade.
The pencil is $100.
The keyboard is $150.

It's like the "Apple tax" hits over and over again.

My 2011 macbook pro battery has finally died and I am left using the AC adapter to power my Mac. What are my options and prices for getting a new battery to install myself?

If iOS really is Apple's "Future of personal computing", they've better have some big features in iOS 10 to unlock the capabilities of the "PC-class" hardware and open up the operating system.

It's going to be interesting to see what they say at WWDC. I feel like last it it was a bit surprising that they actually rolled out true multitasking on iPad, and I'm hoping they continue the trend where the iPad version of iOS gets more power features.

For OS X 10.12, Apple reportedly wants to bring back some iPhoto features at least: http://appleinsider.com/articles/16...2-to-restore-iphoto-editing-features---report

They need to do some pretty fundamental reworking.

I exported a library from Photos the other day.

There's no working dialogue when you do it. The application just freezes and looks like it's hung, and then brings up a notification when it's finished.

What. The. Actual. Living. Fuck?

Is this 1988 again? Even shitty Linux apps don't have that poor a grasp of UI.

The Finder also needs some major reworking. I don't care if iOS is the future, the Finder is a piece of garbage that is still an important part of a desktop OS.

Smart folders are archaic and broken. They need to be fixed and work more like iTunes ones. They need to work with networks better. For instance:

If I open a smart folder from my laptop that is located on my iMac, what happens currently is that my MacBook will perform a Spotlight search of the networked drive, which is slow because Spotlight indexes are stored on the drives themselves so in order to do a query of a network drive it needs to open the database from the MacBook and download its data across the network which may take a relatively long time depending on the network speed.

What it should do is talk to the other machine. My MacBook's Finder should call up my iMacs Finder and say "Hey, so I need a Spotlight query of the following criteria." and the iMac would do the querying locally and send the information back across the network to the MacBook for it to use in its results.

Problem is right now it doesn't even give an indication that it's working. It just sits there looking like an empty results folder for upwards of a minute not giving you any sign that it's still searching. A spinning cursor and live results would do wonders. Sometimes it doesn't even work at all and you are left with an empty folder forever. No indication of why.

Then you can't even edit Smart Folders at all. Once you save them, they're written in stone. You have to recreate them. Which sucks. You can't even create a template Smart Folder and duplicate it to make a change to save time. You have to put in every single parameter again one by one.

Plus they like to hang and freeze the Finder occasionally.

The Finder is also garbage at doing multiple things at once. Why aren't copy and move functions separate killable processes? The Finder hangs so badly if you're performing a copy of large quantities and if you have to cancel it it takes forever or doesn't stop at all. Why not do this as a separate process and thread so if there's a problem I can kill it without harming the Finder itself.

I also hate that any changes I make to a networked folders layout isn't saved into the .DS_Store file. I have to make the changes on the other machine if I want to change the layout. These are my two machines. I should be able to treat a networked drive like it's local if I want to. Give me an option to have changes saved to the file. It's not like it's a Windows machine. This is a Mac drive on a Mac that I also own.

Then there's this:
There's no reason this should happen when iTunes is perfectly capable of choosing text colors when the background color is dark. There's no reason this text should remain black when the background is black or another dark color. This text should become white when the background is dark. The text should always be readable no matter what.

There's many other problems. Many. We need a Finder update. Just take a whole year and only work on the Finder. Nothing else.

My Google Drive wouldn't connect to my Mac computer for some reason. So I disconnected it, and deleted the folder, and then I re-connected it and it is now re-downloading all the huge number and size of files that I had in the cloud.

I didn't want to bother with it "merging" the files and having to sort through any dups that it might have created if I had left the Drive Folder on my computer....

Was there a better way to fix this problem without having to re-download everything?

Ok, I got an AirDrop problem, me and my sister are trying to swap holiday/family photos on our Mac's but neither of us are appearing in the other's AirDrop window in Finder. When I turn on Bluetooth on my iPhone it appears but only on my Mac.

Any suggestions?

Turn off and on Bluetooth and wireless, and restart the respective devices.

Honestly I don't really know what big "pro" features actually remain aside from greater flexibility in handling external media and options that would require a filesystem/browser of some sort. If you want to podcast the remaining bugbear is that only one app at a time can use the phone/tablet's AV capabilities, so that's low-hanging fruit of a sort.

I know I'm quite late the the party here but not being able to aftermarket upgrade the RAM and HDD on a 2015 Macbook Pro is irritating.

Particularly since I just gave a 2012 and 2009 Macbook Pro new life with a RAM and SSD upgrade.

There are now SSD upgrades available via OWC for the newest retina Macbook Pro models, although I don't think they boast the same speed as the OEM models.

It's possible that at some point Apple will switch to standard m.2 connectors. I don't know how likely that is, though.

Apparently there's some new code in OSX Server that references an Early 2016 12-inch MacBook. Early 2016 naming ends for Apple in April

Cmon baby, launch that shit already

The real question will be how much of a bump will it be. Will it remain the "new kid on the block" and still be underpowered, or will it be a worthy replacement for the Air? (In power only of course. People will still complain about the single USB-C port until they add more.)

Might as well ask here.

My folks iMac is weird. When I fire it up the apple logo appears and a progress bar starts ticking up. About half way through it goes to a) a black screen with a mouse pointer or b) a blurred picture of their desktop with the pointer.

It never loads any windows or anything. I can't do anything once it loads.

I can't boot to recovery mode but I can boot to single user mode. Fsck -yf shows no issues.

I'm out of ideas.
