I wish he'd done a normal real-world test of tripping over the power cable and seeing how far the machine slides before the cable pulls out.

I'm so afraid of this happening before my BreakSafe comes in later this week.

Killing magsafe was definitely the worst of the things they did on this. I'm alright with mostly everything else, even the port situation. No new version of magsafe sucks.

Sitting in a coffee shop with my MacBook Escape and its portability is such a pleasure right now. Can't imagine doing this with the 15" without it being unwieldy. This experience might force me to go iMac + MBPe.

I can't even imagine this. If I could I'd be sitting on a 17" MBP right now. That's what I used to have and it wasn't unwieldy at all. This new 15" touchpad version is fucking slim and light as hell. I don't know how someone could think it's unreasonable. Not trying to shit on you or anything, just amazed at how different the needs are for different people. I want more of a workhorse desktop replacement and don't mind more heft at all. Some don't want that obviously.

I actually haven't used the new 15". I was referring to the old 4.5lbs 15" from last year. It's a great "desktop replacement" but man it's gigantic and I can't imagine taking it on airplanes and impromptu coffee shop work sessions.

My old 17" MBP from 2010 was 6.6 pounds. I didn't really mind pulling it up for work sessions and such. I guess on a cramped airplane that might be a bit awkward. I thought my 15" 2012 was pretty perfect size for portability and probably for fitting more shit in it.

The 2016 I've got now feels crazy tiny. I'd honestly trade some of that weight for more features.

I was working on a coffee table that only had space for my MBPe, coffee mug, and a stack of papers to work on. The table wasn't small by any means, but I just couldn't imagine the 15" fitting in there comfortably.

Nah I'm positive they will. Tech punditry right now is just unhinged.
To be clear I don't think they will stop making the imac. Mac Pro however....

Edit: I think, going forward, the only thing they continue to make (other than accessories) that does not have its own integrated screen is the Apple TV.

...hate me...
What are the reasons to go with a 2016 15" vs. 2015 15". The only reasons I'm seeing are better speakers, display, touch bar, and thunderbolt 3. It appears the 2015 15" is faster in benchmarks, has better iGPU, better keyboard, better battery, cheaper, and HDMI/USB 3.0/MagSafe. I just find it too difficult to justify buying an older model. Cost isn't the main issue, it's the comprimises Apple made to make this thing smaller. This purchase has been such a roller coaster, I keep going back and forth on whether I should get the old 15" or new 15". It shouldn't be this hard to buy my first Apple computer.
Don't forget thinness and lightness. But yeah good chance I'd go with the '15. I guess it also depends on how long do you intend to keep it. But for now the '15 sounds like the true frustration-free choice.

So I'm having a real weird networking problem with my new MBP (Touch Bar).

- I can hit a port 80 Apache server on the MBP from another Mac on the LAN, using the direct IP
- Requests to the Apache server using hostname (x.local) time out
- I can't hit a port 8080 Ruby server on the MBP even from direct IP (server is set to 0.0.0.0, can hit localhost internally just fine)
- I can see packets come in to mDNSResponder (Little Snitch) on all the server requests that are failing.

Turning off LS and the firewall on the MBP don't have any effect. Did something change in Sierra on this? My previous Mac was Yosemite (which all those tests succeed on the same network).

I've got a question regarding the new Macbook Pro. I'm in the UK and ordered mine last week, after doing so I received the delivery date of between December 20th and 29th - which seems like an awfully long time to wait.

A friend told me these are usually pushed up and the first delivery estimate is a conservative one. Is that right? Is there a chance this will be pushed up as I'm away during the date it's currently set to be delivered.

Since the live event topic is closed I hope you guys can help me decide which MBP to get:
I can get the 13" non touchbar MBP for 1429€ or the touchbar version for 1669€. The discount on the non touchbar one is the reason I'm willing to pull the trigger in the first place but I'm afraid of regretting not going for the touchbar later. On otherhand I can't fathom how the touchbar wouldn't be plagued by burn in issues down the road. That brings me to my question, I know that the touchbar mbp has the better specs but the difference between the two should be marginal at best, right? I've found no review that clearly states otherwise but I want to be sure I didn't overlook anything that favors the touchbar version.

The performance from what I've heard is very similar between the two. If battery life is of grave importance get the non-touch, otherwise get the touchbar version.

Sorry if already asked; got a new MBP with touch bar today. The only thing I'm missing is a quick "next song" button. I have the play / pause button on the Control Strip but really the button I use the most is skip.

Is that not an option when you customize the control strip? System Preferences->Keyboard>Customize Control Strip

How long is Apple going to support the Airport Utility app?

Well, apparently they haven't officially stopped selling the routers yet. I figure you've got at least five years from whenever that point is; at that point they'll hit vintage status and that's generally when software support ends.

My MacBook Pro 15" comes in next week. I need a hub to connect some USB 3 external HDD's and my 1080p monitor.

Will this hub be okay to use.

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01EJHNGN2/

My bro told me some hubs are cheap and could damage my MacBook? I will charge my MBP using one of the four ports not the hub.

Will I be good to go? Or should I buy a more expensive hub?

Thanks.

And Can't wait to get my new laptop.

I know for my rMBP, there is a limit on the amount of power one USB port can draw. Depending how much you are planning on hooking into it, you might need a powered one.

Specifically, I had issues when 1 keyboard, 1 mouse, 1 external HD, and headphones were all running through USB. Though since everything will be running through the new USB C, you can probably find more information on the maximum power draw on the bus.

Just went in to my local Apple store and they had the exact model I had pre-ordered on the website.

No waiting around for another five weeks :)

Well five years isn't bad. By then I'll most likely want new routers, if not sooner.

Additionally theloop blog thinks Apple will put their own custom chips into macs but not for another five years.

So my Macbook Pro's keyboard is broken, and I'm looking for a temporary yet robust replacement. Any recommendations on wired USB or Bluetooth keyboards?

For what it's worth, it seems the Safari Technical Preview fixed up any issues I had with regular Safari's ridiculous memory leaks. Having a tab with Facebook open and just leaving it sitting there would soak up 500MB+ after a few hours normally, now it looks like it's staying pat.

So yesterday my dad told me he installed MacKeeper because he wanted to clean off his computer. Great. Am I going to have any trouble removing it?

Should open up the app, quit it, drag it to the trash and it will ask if you want to run its uninstaller. Supposedly now that's all you need, but I'd double check the following for any stray bits afterwards:

~/Library/Caches/com.mackeeper.MacKeeper
~/Library/Caches/com.mackeeper.MacKeeper.Helper
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mackeeper.MacKeeper.Helper.plist
~/Library/Application Support/MacKeeper Helper
~/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mackeeper.MacKeeper.plugin.AntiTheft.daemon.plist

You can always use the Malwarebytes tool as well.

Hey guys! Best deal I can get for a Macbook Pro 2015 model, 256 GB 13" is around $1800 due to a Higher Education discount.

I only want the 2015 model, but dont really *need* it right now.

My worry is, when will Apple stop production on the 2015 model? I am worried that if I dont buy it soon, it will be hard to find and I will be forced to go with the 2016 model, or pay even higher for a 2015 model.

Thanks!

If I really want to get rid of something, I use two different uninstaller apps (TrashMe and AppCleaner), followed by a Terminal search for files with the app's name in their name on the entire HDD. But in the case of actual malware like MacKeeper, I would probably just wipe the system.

Chances are it's gonna' stick around until the next update in a years-ish time, but after that who knows. Generally when the models get discontinued though the prices actually *jump* in the short term, so it'd behoove you to get it while they're still being produced.

I've seen MacKeeper ads other places guys. lol

But either way is it really that hard to remove? I'm very thorough. I had to uninstall Google Chrome a few times. That ones a butch to remove. It digs its roots so deeply.

Assuming there wont be any surprise sales on those, its probably best to jump on now, yeah?

Already scratched the hell out of my brand new MBP lid. D:

Accidentally threw my dongle in the same compartment as the laptop in my bag...

So Im a stupid idiot. Got the 128 GB Macbook instead of upgrading, and I dont think this will be enough room.

This supposed 128 GB HD has 17 GB of system taken, with 5 Gigs of apps/bloatware that I dont need.

I hate to ask this, but what's the exchange policy? I am very bothered that I didnt upgrade after thinking I didnt need it

When did you buy this 128gb macbook?

I just used Apple Pay on a website with the Touch ID on my MacBook Pro. The future is nice sometimes.

14 days if you bought from an Apple Store. edit: actually might be more since this is holiday period

So I can actually exchange it?? No questions asked? I just think it's best to pony up the $240 for the HDD

Thats quite amazing! I assume its true for canada too?

Can i possibly go to any store? Or does it have to be the store i bought it from

If it's the same as the US, any store. Obviously make sure you have the receipt

I would check your holiday return period though, might be different

If you do buy this, can you let me know how it is? I bought the Havit usb C hub and so far it's working well with my 15 inch pro. I was able to connect to my monitor right away while transferring file from my external USB 3 hard drive and launching an app from Xcode to my iPad. I really wish there was a guide to USB C hubs so I didn't have to waste 2 hours looking at which hub to buy.

Got in my BreakSafe connector so now my laptop isn't a death trap. It's bulkier than Apple's magsafe and it seems a lot of people don't like the design. I don't really mind it, as long as it keeps my laptop safe.
