Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

Hello Mac GAF, quick question about formatting a new HDD:

Trying to fix an old black MacBook for a friend. She's getting the question mark folder on boot which has been a hard drive problem in the past (and in my experience, but open to suggestions).
I want to install a new HDD but I'm not sure how to go about it. Can I just pop in any old OS X DVD and format using Disk Utility or something? Not sure if those are bootable.

Hell, I've been wishing they'd be 100% consistent about using popup windows vs. slide-down-from-the-top sheets (for both alerts *and* open/save dialogs*) for several OS X versions now.
 
Oh god. I just noticed that in Lion you can't even drag a window from the main screen to a secondary monitor in Mission Control. If you drag it to one of the desktop thumbnails on the secondary monitor instead, the window actually is resized and the desktops dims, indicating a drop target - but you can't drop it.
You HAVE to leave Mission Control and then drag the window to the other desktop. (And if you wanted the window to be in another secondary desktop instead of the active one, you'd have to activate Mission Control AGAIN and move it then.)

What a piece of shit. Has this been fixed in the recent 10.8 previews?
Of course it hasn't, I bet.
 
Apple doesn't seem to care about multiple monitor support. It's a shame, because Microsoft has made some pretty good improvements to theirs in Windows 8.
 
On OSX version names:

If they ever abandon feline names, I suggest they go for reptiles.

OSX Komodo
OSX Salamander

Don't they have a nice ring to them?

Constellations or doing away with the names is IMO most likely.

Indeed, because OS X is going extinct and will be replaced by the smaller, more versatile iOS, who is capable of regulating its own body temperature, burying under the ground and surviving cold climate changes.* :lol

hirokazu: really? I was under the impression that WinRT does not mesh well with multi display setups.

*OS X will not be replaced with iOS, and if it is, it will be in name only, since they essentially use the same core - kernel, libraries, language, and other resources.

Funnily enough, this is true. Apple wouldn't name their software products after old-extinct monsters.

They used big cats, because they are perceived as agile, noble, fierce. Hell, Steve Jobs didn't like a particular Snow Leopard (or was it Lion) because it looked "fat and lazy".

Reptiles? Kinda sound cold-blooded and slimy.

I think if they HAD to change, predatory bird names could be a goer.
 
Obviously if they run out of real cats, they'll start making up their own. But what about Snow Lion? Sabertooth? They'll find a way. But with yearly upgrades I predict they will drop cats all-together sooner rather than later. :(

Yeah, they will be gone. Not really needed if OS X transitions to the yearly update, and gets released alongside hardware like iOS. I think they will also further reduce the cost of upgrade - if free they don't even need the branding, since most people will just hit update and they will have all of their users using the same OS, just like they experience with iOS.

I like the idea of constellations though. There a tons of them, easily identifiable, would make for awesome wallpapers, and genuinely fit where OS X is going (in style).

mrkgoo: Predatory birds would be nice. They are dinosaurs in their own right, but most are better adapted than large felines for future co-existance with man.
 
To be honest though, i'm not entirely convinced that they really will be moving toward a yearly OS X upgrade. Hasn't all that been pure conjecture/speculation?

I honestly have no idea what the deal is with Win8/RT, it sounds like a recipe for disaster to me, having two differently named OSes with some differing capabilities that are also the same OS and looks exactly the same but are different depending on the architecture of device your buying, both of which will be available, possible for the same form factor devices.

But that aside, I think it's great that Microsoft have made efforts to improve multi-monitor features in Windows: http://www.neowin.net/news/huge-multi-monitor-enhancements-coming-in-windows-8. It's a huge shame that Apple not only haven't made improvements for it for a while, but have made the experience worse with Lion's full-screen and don't seem particularly interest in making it better.
 
I would love to see them go free on OS X updates. It's better for users and devs alike to have the maximum number of users on the latest software version.

I'm thinking in updating the OS to Lion, but I've read that this summer will be released the new Mountain Lion.

What should I do?
Could I update my OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion directly?

Yeah better wait Mountain Lion to upgrade and no i don't think you should have problems upgrading from SL as long as you have the AppStore.

I think they'll have to after a certain point. Remember when they used to charge or iOS updates? It'll go away with due time. What i'm wondering is how they can turn out substantial enough upgrades every year, that people will be willing to pay for? I'm hoping that a lot of focus is going to be given into OS X in the next few years, so they push further towards a sort of merged platform with iOS.

Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion should be fine, and I'd wait for it, personally. Forget dealing with Lion's jank. Mountain Lion blazes as OS X should

I think Apple thinks the same. I'm sure they have came to the conclusion that it is probably not much more expensive to give out free updates which save them money on support, documentation and code maintenance - and ultimately leads to a better developer and user experience and happier customers (except for the few people that will be mad at any changes Apple introduces).

Hirokazu: It's good MS is putting some effort into multiple displays considering that it is pretty much for legacy software only, but some of those features don't make sense for OS X, and some are already implemented. I'm not sure how Apple could fix the situation (i.e. make everyone happy), however I'm not sure it is really worth the effort. I'd probably be pissed if I used that kind of setup, but as their average user (MacBook, no accessories but external HD & wifi router) I can't say I really relate. Probably the best thing they could do is just dedicate one monitor to Desktop and one to fullscreen app - this is still useless for people with 3 displays, but we are getting into a microscopic portion of Apple's customers now.

I think if developer started making use of some more of the fullscreen APIs Apple has provided that it would be okay. There is nothing stopping people from having Photoshop on 2 displays except for Adobe being slow to implement features - to my knowledge, Apple expects developers to decide what is best for multiple display setups, whether that is fair or not to them is a different topic all together.
 
Siri-like Voice Dictation coming to OS X Mountain Lion?

According to a resources file inside of the latest build of Safari in the newest seed of the upcoming OS X Mountain Lion, Dictation might be making its way to Macs next. Since Macs do not sport virtual keyboards or physical keyboards with a microphone-labled key, users (by default) will apparently need to simultaneously click both command keys to start voice input.


We are yet to find any other Dictation references in OS X Mountain Lion betas, so we’re keeping Dictation in OS X Mountain Lion as unconfirmed until Apple officially announces it. With voice features being exclusive to certain devices in Apple’s iOS Device portfolio, perhaps Dictation is tied directly to certain Macs. Maybe the new MacBook Pros with Retina Displays, faster processors, thinner form-factors, and USB 3 connectivity.

Dictation key could replace DVD eject key, although there was a rumor that would become the power button (seems like a silly place for power button IMO)

At this rate they would probably be ballsy enough to replace the esc key with a dictation one. But I doubt dictation/siri will be that integrated so soon. Maybe in a few years time.

My guess: it'd be restricted to new hardware. Apple pretty clearly wants to do that with Siri/voice dictation with the iPhone and iPad, and for pretty good reason since suddenly adding every ML-compatible Mac would be a lot of additional server load. Restrict it to new hardware only and the cost of the feature is subsidized by hardware profits.

Also makes some sense because we're at a weird point where literally every single Mac model is in need of a refresh, which usually doesn't happen. I suspect WWDC is going to see a LOT of new Mac hardware (Ivy Bridge! Retina! Voice dictation!), *and* the iOS 6 announcement. I doubt Siri will be coming to the Mac quite yet, but it'll probably be coming to the iPad 3 in iOS 6. This WWDC is going to be huge.

That's not a rumour, that already happened. Where the eject key used to be there is a power key on the MacBook Air.
 
Damn. I always put my dock to the side because vertical real estate is limited but I might have to go back just for that metal dock.

it has a good chance at being restricted to new hardware because only the latest MBP lineup has the dual microphone and built-in noise cancellation found on the iPhone.
 
How is multi moniter stuff now, have they finally sorted it out so it isn't a pain in the ass?
And can we still do a clean install from the download and finding the disk image?

Macs going back a few years, most Core 2 Duo are supported and generally stuff from late 2008 onwards.
Can find it in the Mountain Lion Specs.
