You need an iCloud account to use iCloud. Since you didn't make one all your content will be locked on the device you made them on because you are telling Apple you don't want to use iCloud. You need an account for the documents and other data to be assigned to.

But I can with no problems sync documents between my iOS devices, I can even log in to iCloud.com. =/

I thought I already have an iCloud account seeing how apps, documents, photostream etc. sync between my iOS devices and Apple TV, but I'll go ahead and create a @me account now. Thanks guys. :)

EDIT:
I actually already have a @me account but it's inactive and I don't seem to remember my password. Anyway, wasn't one supposed to be able to choose between @me.com and @icloud.com?

How long before someone finds out a hack to put widgets in the Notification Center? Like weather or CPU/network info, basically iStat Menus but in the NC.

Yeah, but my disc drive has been dead for quite a while now. :lol I'll get my hands on an USB somehow, though.

do you have 8GB of free space on your current partition? so long as you formatted it with a GUID partition table, you should be able to click on the enclosing drive, go to partition and click + to add an extra partition on the bottom. just make sure it's 8GB, format and restore the ML DMG to it.

once you're booted in you can then erase your main system partition and install a clean OS.

I received my Macbook Pro (13" i5) yesterday, awesome device. Today I upgraded to Mountain Lion and HOLY SHIT Safari is fast! I'm really loving my Macbook so far.

Still no code, great. This is bullshit.

And they still ignore users with standard mice, as I've just noticed - it's still not possible in Safari to close a tab or open a link from the reading list with a mousewheel click.

So, is there somewhere else to download the Windows Support Software that gets downloaded through bootcamp? I've been trying to download it is pretty darn slow and keeps cancelling itself.

Why not just make an iCloud account? You don't need to use the @me.com e-mail address if you don't want to.

So, how does this work, lol.
I have mostly everything set up through my Apple ID already, do you merge the Apple ID and iCloud account some how or are they kept separate and you just use both?

Okay so Notes has left me pretty stumped, I'm hoping one of you guys may have experienced this:

1.jpg

In the iCloud tab of System Preferences, Notes is definitely not selected for any Cloud related shenanigans.

2.jpg

Whilst de-selected, this is how the accounts tab of Notes appears.
I have no 'On This Mac' option/account, nor can any newly created notes be saved locally.
When going into the accounts setting of Notes I am taken to the iCloud tab upon which Notes remains de-selected.
Despite this, logging in on another Mac allows me to see some of my notes, so clearly iCloud is in effect somewhat.

3.jpg

So, when I actually do activate iCloud.....

4.jpg

I have two iCloud accounts and everything is duplicated.

I want to activate/'tick' iCloud to ensure all of my notes get synced without causing all notes to duplicate in the app.
Anybody know what's going on and how I may fix it?

Soon as you turn on iCloud in a iOS device or a Mac it should prompt you to make a iCloud account. It'll merge with your Apple ID and you can sign in with with either account info from here on out for both.

You don't need to make a .me e-mail to sync your notes if you don't want to, I use a Gmail account for my Apple ID and as long as I have iCloud activated on my phone everything works. It's the same e-mail I use to log in iCloud web, Apple ID = iCloud account.

Notes does need an e-mail to sync but you can just use the notes system from whatever e-mail you use on your Apple ID. Just make sure you have "Notes" ticked on in the mail settings of your device.

I have two e-mails on my iPhone, so what I do is sync the notes and calendar only through one of them (the Gmail one since it's linked to my ID to keep things simple, and so I don't have notes and calendars duplicated on more than one mail account for no reason). I've been syncing notes and reminders for a while now on Lion, accessing the notes through the mail app and the reminders through the calendar app. It's just more convenient now that each got a specific separate app on ML. After I upgraded to ML, everything kept working as it was and the new apps synced the notes/reminder data automatically.

I can't get mine to work.

I have an Apple ID which I use for iCloud and a Google account set up. But when I try turn on Notes syncing with my iCloud account it asks me to create a .me account, while there's no Notes inside my Google account, which only has Reminders. =/

So as soon as I arrived home and opened up my MacBook Air, text messages I had received today finally synced to my machine. It's finally working right! I'm so happy! I can text from anywhere and not have to care about which machine I'm using. This, my friends, is the future right here.

Interesting to note is that it seems if you catch it on one device, it'll prevent the alert from sounding on other devices. I had an alert half-play on my iPhone because I had replied to it on my Air right as it was coming in on the iPhone. Neat.

Also, I do wish it allowed you to reply in place without needing to open Messages just to reply. If it had that, it'd be perfect.

I see, that's weird then. :( In my case I can access the notes I make on the phone even through Gmail web. Hopefully making the .me account will make your notes sync-able without you having to login with different accounts on iCloud.

See that's what I'm thinking. That I'll probably have to be signed in to 2 accounts at once, would suck.

For anyone else who switched back to Safari and missed Chrome's Status Bar:

http://ultimatestatusbar.com

Any other must have extensions for Safari?

And I didn't notice scrolling being better in Safari 6 at all until I tried going back to Chrome. Holy cow, is Safari 6's GPU-accelerated scrolling better!

But is it kind of janky/stutter-y for anyone else? For me it's been smooth smooth smooth JERK smooth smooth smooth JANK smooth smooth. I thought it might have something to do with an extension, but I thought I'd ask first.

6 definitely feels like a x.0 release, though. Tons of little bugs in rendering and stuff. It's kind of unfortunate, because I feel like we just went though this with 5.0 and 5.1, which, did that even ever get stable? I don't know because I was permanently on Chrome at that point.

How's Firefox on ML?

I usually like to stick with it on Windows 7 due to ad block and the ability to customize everything...

Firefox is crap imo. The biggest problem with it on mac is the really bad gesture support. Just stick with Safari or Chrome.

Well I decided to stick with the Retina and just wait out the ML fix. I really having just one device for everything, so hopefully the graphics fix comes ASAP.

Weird I did mine today and got it in like 5 minutes.

Got my MBP back from the Apple store because of a busted display, and I'm playing around with Mountain Lion. I love the gestures. I only had Snow Leopard, so it was a fairly large upgrade.

In my honest opinion. Firefox on OS X is so far behind Chrome and Safari in terms of technologies it's not even funny.

They just NOW literally just recently now as of a few weeks ago got Fullscreen support. Almost a year after Chrome had it. And Chrome's still works better.

Their gesture support is terrible.

There's no key combo for Next/Previous tab. (Which is very important for me. In Chrome I have three finger left and right set to switch between tabs. It's amazingly useful.)

All its plusses don't outweigh its terrible lack of features that make using it easier. It's missing so much stuff. I only keep it around for a certain thing. And even then I hate having to launch it. (Though it does help keep my browser history cleaner so...)

I love Chrome so much. Especially with matching iOS versions that make browsing with multiple devices much less painful.

Did you have a mobile me account? I wonder if that would be related, as I've heard of a lot of issues if you had a mobileme account and getting icloud on top of it.

Just a heads-up, Ultimate Status Bar has been doing this on Safari 6 sometimes while changing tabs:

aGb1P.png

Doesn't happen a lot and it's just a minor bug, it still works normally when the bar gets frozen in the middle of the page like that and it only affects the current tab. It's happening with both version 1.2.5 and the 1.2.5.2 beta, but chances are it will be fixed in the following update.

Finally cleaned up, backed up, and downloading ML.

I've been seeing a lot of people making USB install drives, is this necessary or just good practice? I never did that with Lion last year.

Firefox does have a keyboard combo for switching through tabs. Control tab to go right and Control Shift Tab to go left. Agreed on it being very far behind Safari/Chrome.

I'm having annoying audio issues with Mountain Lion. Like the little sound effects associated with moving files and emptying the trash and stuff like that don't always play consistently, even though my sound output settings appear just fine. And the new email sound just doesn't play at all.

This is a completely fresh install too. Ugh.

Question...

Lets say I want to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion but somewhere down the line, I really want something from my Time Machine back up.

Can I plug in my hard drive and get whatever file I wanted to put on there?

Just got my code. I reapplied for the program today for the third time and received it an hour later. So I guess third times a charm.

I wish I could place fullscreen spaces to the left of the main space. I would pay money for an app that enables this. I don't use Dashboard. It's disabled. I want to put some apps to the left of the Desktop space and some to the right with the Desktop in the center. It sucks that I can't. Seeing as the Desktop mainly ends up being my "Finder Space". I'd prefer it be in the middle of my workflow.

And somehow make it remember where in line the app window prefers to be located so they always open there from then on.

I think there should be a left handed/right handed mode. I bet it is easier to pull the Notification Center out with your dominant hand - fortunately I am right handed. But I think they list append to the right because of their L->R written language bias, it's also why the scrollbar has been on the right for so long, even though NeXT had done some tests and found scrollbars on the left gave better control to users.

My dock has been super buggy in ML. First the "active" dots weren't showing up below the icons of open apps and now the icon doesn't bounce as it's opening. I tried deleting the dock pref file and it solved the dot problem for about an hour. Now it's back to being broken.

Guess I'll try again.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
So what exactly do you guys mean by Safari being 'faster' in ML? Heavy image/gif pages appear quicker? Searches run snappier? I've barely noticed much difference myself so far. :/

Though I primarily am a Chrome user on PC, so maybe I am just not that accustomed to how Safari ran previously. But I really never felt it was sluggish on Snow Leopard/Lion really during the times I did use it.

Couldn't you just make a second desktop space and use that as your main, and just ignore the very left one? Or put the app you want in full screen just as a maximised window on that fist desktop?

Yes you can dig into your time machine backup and pull a single file.

Am I crazy, or is the blue underline (as opposed to the old dot) more difficult to see? I find myself squinting to try and tell which apps are open. Otherwise, smooth sailing.

I did have Mobile Me before upgrading to iCloud yeah.
I had a feeling that wouldn't go smoothly!
Thanks for the tip, I'll see what I can dig up from those having similar issues...

Im sure this has been covered, but when I go to click on Mirroring it pops up and says no devices detected, but my Apple tv is connected... any help with why this is happening?

It has been designed that way deliberately, I think. In Lion, they were toying with the idea of not having the lights at all, seeing as an app with a light might not actually be running, and an app with no light might ACTUALLY be running.

In Lion, Apps will automatically close or remain open according the whim of the system. So they figured they might do away with the lights. But they chickened out at the last moment and kept the lights.

Maybe Mountain Lion's more subtle lights are the next step.

I did have Mobile Me before upgrading to iCloud yeah.

I'm totally speculating, but it was based off an issue on iPhones that you might save a new contact, and while it would appear in contacts, it would never sync.... as it turned out, there was a hidden mobileme contacts group, that lingered after iCloud came out. So contacts were added to it, but actually weren't in the main contacts group.

It really sucks that the paying customers of mobile me sort of got shafted with a poor product, and continue to get shafted with a poor transition. I've heard of a number of issues completing a mobileme to icloud transition, so I just speculated that might be your issue, so I really don't know for sure, but if you find anything out, I'd like to keep abreast!
