Funny, my Mountain Lion download disappeared from the app store, I guess that is what you get for downloading it 4 times just to make sure it isn't just your Retina model having these lag issues. BTW there is numerous Retina owners on Macrumors reporting the same UI lag.

have you tried using a utility like gfxcardstatus and forcing your laptop to use the discrete GPU? http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus

so I'm trying to get used to safari now that it has an omni bar. Is there any way to get chrome extensions to work on safari? I can't find any searchable list of Safari extensions.

looking mainly to get:
neogaf live thread,
neogaf user highlighter,
google reverse image search

You can do that in Energy Saver settings without the need for a separate app, and it does indeed more or less completely dismiss lag.
Yeah, that's the kind of reason why I'm giving it a couple of generations before I jump on board with a computer with a retina display. Like we've seen in some games on the iPad 2 vs 3, just driving that many pixels takes so much graphical horsepower that I don't trust integrated graphics to keep up yet.

Hopefully they can improve it somewhat in 10.8.x releases.

you should be able to get the gaf ones by searching for in gaf for the extension thread. safari versions were made.

I haven't looked for the google reverse image search but i think that one should be available from the apple site. go to the safari menu item and click on "extensions" to go to the apple repository.

there are other, non official repositories that you can search for online.

there's no search bar on the safari extension page so I haven't been able to find anything. I'll look for the extension thread.

Anyone having the problem where three finger swipes stop working after a while?

A bit of googling says that some people are having the problem if they let their computer go to sleep or go idle too long and there doesn't seem to be a fix outside of restarting.

I'm not even sure how ML could break swipes like that but I hope it gets patched soon. Browsing without gestures is a bit of an annoyance right now.

there's not too many extensions listed on the apple page so finding big ones (like from google) isn't too tough. and, yeah, google reverse image serach isn't one I could find. tineye reverse image search was there.

however, i find it's almost always faster just to use google to search for extensions anyway since there are some good ones that aren't submitted to apple and on their site.

Just copy the installer out of your applications folder onto a USB drive before installing - otherwise you'll have to download it again as it disappears upon install.

Then you can run it on as many macs as you want.

taking this a step further, there are multiple instructions on the web to turn this USB drive into a bootable installation disc.

Just got my first laptop. A 13inch Macbbook Air, midrange model 8GB of RAM. I love this machine, got my Mountain Lion up and running already.

Anyone link me to the neogaf safari extension? I can't seem to find it online.

Love this thing.

Just ran into a weird issue where my Game Center info on the home tab glitched (had null for the email field and 0/0/0 for my stats) after sending a friend request.

Seemed to go back to normal after exiting and restarting it, though.

there's ALWAYS ONE
My computer isn't recognizing my external optical drive and external hard drive ever since I installed Mountain Lion. The lights are turning on when they're plugged in, and they work on my Windows computer, but they don't show up in either the Devices list or the Disk Utility. Has anyone else had this problem?

AirPlay Mirroring so goddamn good. Using it to throw up NBC Olympics online coverage onto my big TV.
Do you get a full picture on the TV? My roommate has a 55" LED Samsung and I can get a decent size picture when I display using the Apple TV setting, but it's definitely not full screen like when I AirPlay a video from my iPhone or iPad. Kind of a let down actually. Hopefully I'm just doing something wrong.

Ok installed.

Well, its basically the same as Lion. Expansion pack is a good term for it. Service pack honestly would not be that incorrect. The changes are all minor. The additions are minor.

-Launchpad is improved. Search is good, spacing has been changed and looks nicer.

-Will get Notification center up and running tomorrow. I don't really use Mail or iCal so i donno how much it will be used.

-Switching to Chrome tomorrow. Fuck Firefox.

-New dock is nice.

-Scroll bar change is really nice.

-Doubt I'll ever use notes and reminders. Maybe. Nice that they automatically sync with my phone.

-All the icons Candybar changed reverted back to their old, ugly selves. The hideous iTunes and App Store icons disgust me. Why does Apple suck at icon design?

-Love the idea of messages, but since it doesn't work with ordinary text messages, I dunno how often I'll use it.

-Doesn't feel much faster.

-Why are Game Center, Calendar, Notes and Reminders so UGLY? Game Center and Calendar especially!

-Really wish they added a texture in the space between spaces, rather than the solid black. Someone suggested this last year, and it is a smart idea.

I started using both just so I could have something in Notification Center. I don't use Twitter regularly, nor do I receive tons of e-mail each day, so Notification Center has been rather useless to me. I was kind of hoping I'd use it more.

I'm experimenting a bit more with AirPlay Mirroring right now on my 2012 MBA, and HTML5 videos from Youtube work flawlessly. Video and audio are synced correctly with little to no lag. Works really well.

Flash videos from Youtube are a different story though. :/

My mac died right after Lion came out. Finally got it fixed for this and besides notifications I don't see a difference haha.

Any way to have Gmail calendar/mail notifications from Chrome?

I really don't want to use the mail/calendar apps.

My fonts look weird since updating. Firefox and Chrome both display differently. Hmm..

Sounds like there's not much you like at all. Maybe you'd prefer Windows?

No no. I think the changes are minor is all. I don't think my comments were unreasonable. The only thing I don't like is the way Calendar and Game Center look visually.

I mentioned three things that I liked - small things, but they are changes that I really appreciate. Notification Center would be great, if I can get it working without needing iCal/Mail.

I didn't mean for my post to come across as "OMG THIS UPDATE SUCKS." More like, "hey it has some neat little improvements, but overall its not a huge update." That doesn't at all mean that i should just go and switch to Windows.

Yeah I'm not getting huge mileage out of the new features (especially on a 2010 mac), but the speed boost is definitely there.

I thought you had reasonable comments.

I'm loving mountain lion for the most part.

Messages is my favourite. Not having to log in to some random service tochat with people is awesome. Been running the beta since it came out and I love it. Have been in contact with people more than ever.

Sometimes I just up and try
To message someone randomly to see if they have imessage ... An they do! Sweet.

I'm starting to appreciate the whimsy of the skeumorphism. I mean it's totally unnecessary and kind of hideous, but it's basicalyl all the icloud service apps. Kind of strange that it's such an opposite direction to the business apps such as aperture, finder and iTunes where they are draining every last drop
Of colour and life from them. Maybe that's the point -
Mac apps look bland and serious, icloud apps 'fun'.

I'm fine with it. As much as I think windows 8 looks interesting and us am interesting approach, I'm not sure that is the way to woo the masses. In general, people don't appreciate simplicity and design, but do appreciate whimsy.

Personally I'm not sure what to think.

What features are you referring to? I have a 2009 Mac and I'm not aware of any ML features that don't work well for me.

Oh everything is working fine so far from a technical standpoint, I was just relating with Tuck in that I don't find myself using calendar/notes/reminders very often so the increased iCloud emphasis and notification center aren't of huge use to me personally. That may change though, I'm liking the ability to set location reminders from the desktop.

Also I've been wondering; why is it that syncing notes across iCloud requires a @me.com address?

Edit;
Maybe a jab at AirPlay restriction?

Nah I've made peace with that. I don't have a current setup where that would be of much use, so it's not killing me. Powernap would have been nice, though.

Wait, it's only 2011 or newer? Apple really sucks ass with them forcefully removing features for no reason. I guess I should have figured as much though.

just a tip for anybody with a MBPr make your download folder and document folder on your dock a folder instead of a stack and the UI lag goes away. That is one weird ass glitch that you think they would have caught.

Finally got my code. Will see when I'm back home if it's a server code or an expired one.

It's still lagging? Well done, Apple.

...hate me...
Ya, that's colossal bullshit. :/
No it's not. Apple's AirPlay Mirroring uses Intel Quick Sync, which is video encoding through hardware. Only Sandy Bridge CPUs have that. It means fast encoding with little power drain.

You can use AirParrot as a 3rd party software alternative on non-Sandy Bridge Macs, but you'll find out that it's a CPU intensive task and will drain a lot of battery on laptops.

So guys, I got an issue. My Lion Macbook harddrive got corrupted or something a few days ago and I have been working to fix it ever since. Long story short, I got Mountain Lion installed on it fresh. I then used Migration Assistant to restore my user and apps (same user name so it overwrote the admin one that I just made), basically everything.

After that, it all seemed fine, except I can't open a few apps. Reminder and Notes on the dock are what I tried, didn't go through every app. It just never opens and has an error. I thought maybe it was because I migrated my apps or something.

Reopened the Mountain Lion install, and it still showed me the choice to install 10.8 so I just went ahead with it, hoping it basically reinstalls/repairs it without losing my data. Was that ok to do? It's currently installing, just wanted an idea if I am doing it wrong.

edit: ok it finished, and I can now open those apps. But did I make a big mess out of my OS?
