Is there any way to group messages in Mail by date, similar to how Outlook does?

I want to collapse e-mails older than like two weeks, as it stands it's just an endless list.

How do I get my iMessages to show up on my MBP? I signed in on the computer but I can't seem to figure it out?

And...what's the Mac equivalent of a character map and how do I find/use it?

Not to my knowledge, but what you can do is make a smart mailbox, set it to only display mail newer than two weeks, and use that to filter it. It works pretty well.

Do you have your Caller ID on your phone set to the same email address as the Caller ID in Messages?

Most apps have in the Edit menu a "Special Characters" floating panel, it's very nice can be searched and customized, has a history and favorites.

Ok guys, I'm pretty much royally fucked. Typing this out on my phone..

So before I finally got ahold of an 8gb USB drive to use, I made a ML partition on my main hard drive as you guys suggested, and booted into it. Obviously the installation process didn't work, but I was able to use the Disk Utility that's part of it to go and format my main hard drive partition. So that's now erased, but with it I have nothing to boot into. Anyway, got the USB and restored the ML source onto it, etc etc, and booted into it. This is what I get now:

2012-07-29%20at%2005:45.png

Now the main hard drive is only one partition as I removed the ML one from it, so when I boot up holding option, it looks like this:

2012-07-29%20at%2005:47.png

I get that error in the pic previous, and restoring from a time machine doesn't seem to do anything at all. But I can open Disk Utility, which looks like this:

2012-07-29%20at%2005:52.png

What do I do? Why isn't it working? My disc drive is broken btw, so I can't use my old Snow Leopard install disc either.. and as I showed in a pic I posted in another post, Internet Recovery doesn't work. So what do I do? Panic mode here. :s

Forgive the stupidity but do browsers have that?

Virtually any app that takes text can use it. Most apps have it in the Edit menu because it is a 'freebie' provided by Apple, like copy and paste. Even if it does not appear in the menu(I know it shows up in Safari and Chrome, sorry but I don't use FireFox) it is a global floating panel, and will follow you to the active app, so you can call it out in TextEdit and use it in a text field of some other app. In Safari it is the bottom menu entry in Edit, right below Dictation.

Sentry - I don't understand - you were able to boot into the ML partition that I suggested, but on that screen doesn't it give you the option of installing Mountain Lion along with the option to launch Disk Utility? why can't you just choose that?

why didn't the installation process work? what error is it giving you? considering that it's downloading the OS straight from Apple's servers and installing it in a 'clean' environment, you shouldn't have any errors like you might using the USB method.

Thank you! I'm using FF right now so I clicked on edit and hey look! A "Special Characters" option.

Now I feel very, very silly for asking a stupid question. I'm gonna go hide now. :)

Pro tip: Firefox is the worst browser available for OSX. Give Chrome, Safari, or Opera an extended trial run. And see if you don't have a better experience.

I actually LOVE Opera. I don't really remember why I stopped using Chrome, I think I just didn't like how it looked? And I have some scripts or something for another forum that aren't compatible with Safari. :/

Definitely going to try them out again though. :)

Any particular reason that Safari isn't bringing me to the last read post on here? Scrolling down 4 or 5 posts isn't the end of the world but...I don't think it's supposed to be doing that?

meh. Safari's best if you have all your chips in Apple's ecosystem. Still prefer Chrome and Firefox because they're better for multiplatform use and have far better extension libraries.

managed to get Mountain Lion up and running on my hackintosh after an hour of trial and error. took a bit of work as Apple changed enough code to cause boot crashes, but after resolving that the everything appears more stable now than with Lion. i also see the first meaningful improvement in 10.8 - improved 3rd party USB camera support. Microsoft's 720p LifeCam now autofocuses quickly and without stutter on Facetime and Photobooth.

not bad for a glorified service pack!

It is. It really is. I'm so sick and tired of it. I think I may switch to Chrome when I get Mountain Lion installed.

A whole year has passed and they still don't support Lion scroll bars. Unbelievable.

Always found this talk odd. Apple is doing yearly upgrades now compared to MS's every 3 years. I mean if you compare 2013's 10.9 back to Snow Leopard I am sure it will as dramatic of a upgrade as Window's tri-yearly upgrades. I mean just going back to how Snow Leopard looked in 2010 vs. Mountain Lion now is a pretty dramatic difference.

Unless you are heavily invested in the Google ecosystem I can't imagine any reason to go with Chrome over Safari, especially now that Safari has the speed edge over Chrome and a merged search/url bar.

no browser is definitively faster than the other. Chrome has a slightly faster javascript engine than Safari or Firefox (according to SunSpider), Safari has far better hardware acceleration than Chrome and Firefox, and all three render DOM elements quick enough that few will ever notice a difference between the three.

Chrome has a slight edge because they cache DNS requests and preload pages, and the latest Firefox and Chrome support SPDY, which improves upon regular HTTP requests.

But Safari has that swoosh animation in the URL bar.

I wish Chrome had the back/forward window swiping animation that Safari does. It is so DOPE. Much better than a stupid arrow icon.

Trying out Safari for the first time in a long time.

Is it just me, or does it take a couple extra seconds to finish rendering a GAF page if you scroll to the bottom quickly? :-/

edit: or any long page for that matter.

I just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion, and I've noticed that everything still works, aside from the SkyDrive app from Microsoft for some weird reason.

Well, that's not that much to lose, seeing as I also boot Windows 7 on my MacBook Air. One thing I can say is that the laptop feels faster during use... and there's no longer a white flash while booting and logging in. It was very jarring in Lion.

As for Safari, uh, let's just say that I still prefer Firefox's normal-sized tabs.

I guess I don't notice it because I am a tab fiend, have 10+ open at any given time.

I do like some of Firefox UI mockups, but it will probably be another 3 years before they adopt any of the ideas if ever.

Just to comment on this question:

I'm not invested in the Google ecosystem in any meaningful way. That said:

1.) If you log into your Google account, it will sync bookmarks and add-ons between all of your computers.

2.) Chrome still has superior add-ons, I find. And/Or add-ons that aren't available on Safari yet.

3.) I find Google's Omnibar to be superior. I still find it the more efficient system for leveraging other search engines.

4.) Chrome is less CPU-intensive, based on what I'm seeing right now. My system--with all the same tabs open that I had open in Chrome--is running about 10C-15C hotter with noticeably more CPU work. I use iStat Menus always to keep an eye on such things, and the uptick in CPU usage is very clear and very obvious.

5.) It's not faster than Chrome.

6.) I'm seeing noticeable rendering issues based on the javascripting being used, as well as blank screens when scrolling long pages (like a GAF page set to 100 posts per page).

7.) I still have to install 3rd party apps to get basic things like website icons on tabs (which I find critical for identifying what page a tab is when you have a number of tabs open.

8.) Hell, there's even a touch of lag in typing this comment in Safari.

I'm still going to spend more time with Safari today, but I can't see a meaningful reason for someone to choose Safari over Chrome in OSX for any reason at all. Still doesn't seem as polished as Chrome.

This pretty much sums it up. I tried using Safari for a couple of days, and had to switch back. The one thing I did REALLY like was how awesome the page back and page forward is on Safari. The fact that it reloads the page right after you do it kind of renders it pointless, but the animation is very cool. I wish Google would adopt something like that.

Really stuck here, basically bricked MBP at this point so any and all help is appreciated guys.

Did you try calling Apple Support? I'd think they can walk you though this much faster than posting here, which gets you a reply every...30 minutes.

Safari 5 wasn't like that, and I'm not sure why they made that change. Hopefully people complain and Apple changes them back to non-flexible sized tabs.

Also, people's conplaints also stopped Apple from going with the top-window tabs they were trying out before, and to this day I'm bitter over that. I loved those things.

Lol, if only! I don't live in a region that would let me call apple support without paying out of the ass for international calling. :p and no actual Apple stores that I could walk into in this entire country, haha. My only lifeline at this point is my iPhone and using up my minutes on Internet usage.

Sorry if my pleading for help is getting annoying/fucking up this thread, though. :

I would try to get an external disk drive and try to install SL that way if you can. I don't know if older MBP's allow that though. If not then you could always take a trip to the apple store and I am sure they will re-install SL for you or offer you a new disk drive...

Edit: just read you have no apple stores near you, maybe try a repair technician in your area if you can? But I would try the external drive before anything.

Yeah, that's what I'm planning to do tomorrow, drive to my house and find my old SL envelope with the install disc, as well as my screwdriver set that I used to open up my MBP. Then I'll either get an external or internal slot loader and fix this shit that way.

So after two weeks of owning my first Mac I still haven't used time machine? Is it something I *should* do? Or does it not really matter?

Also, can I use it via an external USB drive? I only have 256gb on this SSD and would rather not use TM on it.

So far I'm really impressed by OS X in general. I never really sat down and used it but now it's really something else. Especially w/ the different desktops and the ability to swipe between them.

You absolutely, positively should have a backup solution. If that solution is Time Machine or not is up to you. I don't really use it myself, because almost everything I do file-wise is on two redundant external drives, and everything in my main drive is backed up via various cloud methods.

If you use your internal drive as your main drive, Time Machine seems like a great solution for keeping your data safe.

And while having Time Machine back up to the same drive that it's backing up from will give you protection should you screw something up file-wise, that would in no way be a "real" back-up solution (because if the drive dies, is stolen, etc., then your backup is gone too.)

You can use an external drive for timemachine, but you have to format with the correct filesystem first. You can do this with Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.

As for the usefulness of Time machine, it depends on your use of the device. I keep my MBA relatively light on actually important data so I figured it wasn't all that necessary.
If your job/education depends on it though, or you use it to store family photos or something like that it's very wise to back it all up. It's a painless process.

I've never used time machine, so I can't speak to it...but I can highly recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner for backup purposes. Primarially because it's so easy and creates a bootable backup. If your HDD goes down, you can hook up your usb backup and boot right into your OS from the external drive and lose no time. Then when your replacement drive comes in, you just clone the backup on the external (that you booted into) back to the internal drive and restart using the same program and you're done.

It's ridiculously easy and it's never failed me.

I think time machine will format a drive for you, at least if it's new.

And yes, you should very much use time machine (or other backup software, time machinenis just more simple and integrated) on am external. Using it on an internal is a waste of time and space (lol time and space) for just a versioning system.

So some hidden improvements I've enjoyed:
Waking from sleep now has the pointer all ready to go instanty - in lion it would take a few seconds.
Time machine icon doesn't spit an exclamation Mark at me if I miss just one hourly backup.

Some stuff I don't like:
I've seem the big tabs on safari before but I didn't like them then and I don't really like them now.
Time machine icon appears to not animate when preparing or cleaning. I always used the icon as a sign time machine was doing somethig, now I have to actively check. Then again with mobile backups, maybe it was always doing something anyway I just isn't know and this is like the app runnin lights in th dock.
For some reason my mail has stopped usin the cog animation when checking for mail. Probably a bug and I should reboot to see.
