Do you use RSS at all? You can set up an RSS feed from any twitter account. I use it to follow a couple accounts without having to have a twitter thinger.

for a few days now I've been having a lot of tearing in safari,
be it just when scrolling or even worse, when writing text in text boxes...
anyone else been experiencing this?

For the last days, the two finger swipe to go back and forward in Chrome has not been working properly. It works in some pages, and it doesn't in some others.
Has this happened to anybody else?

I know it sucks to get no responses, since you have no idea where you're at, so just letting you know I haven't been having issues in Safari. So it's not Safari alone.

I noticed just now that the data partition on my external drive isn't recognized by my new Mac. The filesystem is either NTFS or exFAT. I don't know which one as it's been quite a while since I formatted it and I had plenty of Lion incompatibility problems with the available NTFS drivers back then. Took some time until I got it working.

Anyway, OS X should be able to at least read both of the FS's. Even my BR player can read it, so the drive's not faulty. Maybe simply installing a driver would help - which one would you recommend? Paragon, MacFuse, Tuxera, or another? I'm running Mountain Lion, by the way.

edit: Tuxera is working flawlessly, the partition is displayed and writable.

Question for you guys. I've been having a hell of a time keeping Google connected for ichat and mail.

Randomly they will disconnect and say "Could not connect to this Google IMAP server" and the only way for me to get reconnected is to reboot the computer. Hitting "take account online" in mail doesn't do anything, same with quitting ichat and restarting.

Any help?

I randomly checked the notification center and saw alerts from 4 days ago. I was so hyped for this feature and it has turned out to be utterly useless. I wish Growl/Indie Mac developers would step up and take it over.

I mostly use it for SABnzbd to check when downloads are finished, but weren't notifications always going to be not as useful on OSX since you don't really 'need' them on the desktop?

Did you check if those notifications are from apps you have set to display banners and not alerts? I find the alerts to be pretty consistent in staying onscreen. that should be what you want if you don't want to have to slide into NC to see the things. banners disappear after a few seconds and you won't see them if you miss that initial appearance.

Are there any better PDF viewers than Preview? I like it for the most part, but the way in which it allows you to highlight is very limiting if you're reading scans. You can't properly highlight anything--the best I can do is make circles and squares (traditional highlighting just embodies the whole page when there's no "text" for it to pick up on).

I've been a heavy user of notifications on the desktop for many years through Growl. There is more multitasking and background services on the desktop. Indeed it was the reliance on the usefulness of notifications from Growl that lead to my dissatisfaction with certain mobile platforms *cough* iOS *cough*. Growl didn't really have a notifications center although I'm growing nostalgic for the screen full of alerts it would leave behind

even alerts I attend to still end up in notification center and have to be manually cleared. Unless I'm encountering a bug I don't really understand what's going on.

Question, and maybe this is better in the hardware thread, but I plan to grab Windows 8 for boot camp on the mac and this is my first mac, so I've never done it. I have an Air, so no disc drive.

How do I go about getting Win 8 and getting it running for dual boot on Mac?

I would honestly wait until Apple releases Bootcamp drivers for Windows 8. Your laptop has many individual components (bluetooth, camera, wireless, graphics card) that might not have compatible drivers yet for Windows 8.

Best hold off until Bootcamp officially supports Win8.

Has Safari been pretty busted for anyone else? I started using it when ML came out (it's fast as hell), but it crashes on me constantly and I very frequently have to reload YouTube videos because they won't play.

It's been decent for me. I've had around 3 or 4 total crashes of safari since ML came out. Considering how much I use it, I don't think that's too bad and its not any worse than the times I used old safari or chrome, firefox.

Do you know if youtube is loading the flash player or the html5 player? I've found that flash video players are still the main source of hanging or frozen pages for me.

For some reason, all of a sudden, it won't always recognize me trying to do a Google search with the new URL bar. It'll take URLs just fine, but I put in search terms and hit enter, and nothing happens.

That's just been happening for a very short time, so I'm not sure what exactly it would have been to start that problem.

Make sure you grab rEFIt as there are a number of scenarios with GPT and OSX that may make actually getting Windows 7/8 to install somewhat problematic. It took me a while to actually get it going - but there are few things I wouldn't do for XCom :)

How do I switch to HTLM5? I've never messed with anything.

I don't know. Chrome never crashes for me and I constantly have 20+ tabs open. I don't think it's acceptable behavior for a browser to just crash and not even give the user information about what just happened. One minute I click a link the next it's just gone. I tried Safari once more when they finally implemented the option to start with the tabs of the last session. But when I saw that it suddenly crashed I went back to Chrome again.

To be fair, I've never been too comfortable with Safari. It's always felt a little off to me.

I've been getting this too once in a while. No crashes though.

I've been having some youtube issues with safari as well, in fact I've had a rather large amount of small niggling issues with OSX on the whole.

I frequently have to reset SMC or the GPU clock rate is lowered from 900mhz to 100mhz.
This has to be redone every time I install an update.
I also have occasional pops and crackling audio, a problem that appeared after the 10.8.2

I get the notion that every OS update seems to break something, somewhere.
This is completely extraordinary given how few models Apple has, QA testing should be a breeze.

At this point it is my opinion that OS X does not compare favorably to newer windows versions as far as stability and technical polish goes.

Other than that, I love the design, the touchpad, the battery life, the build quality and I'm honestly astounded by the gaming performance I get out of the thing.

I'm on a 15" retina.

I'm missing a good Facebook program in OSX, given how far the FB integration is at this point. Twitter has a good app. That menutab Facebook thing is terrible.

Seriously. Not sure why there isn't an official one yet considering how Apple and Facebook seem to be on such good terms. I don't even use it a lot but I'd like at least a good Facebook messages program and there is none, the official one was promised but is nowhere to be seen.

Their site tells you to use the jabber protocol on Messages for Mac but it's not a good solution for me because it doesn't support group chats (Adium doesn't either for FB).

I am thinking about purchasing a Mac mini and sharing it with my PC's monitor and mouse/keyboard. I have two questions:

1. Does a Logitech unifying receiver for mice and keyboards is detected right out of the box with Mountain Lion?
2. Are most PC's monitors supported right out of the box or should I check the manufactures' page? I have this monitor and plan to connect with HDMI, but there is no mention of OS X: http://usa.asus.com/Display/LCD_Monitors/VE278Q/#overview. This guy is using it with his MacBook Pro in a YouTube review, but I do not know if he had to do anything to get it working: http://youtu.be/RtwzZTdeh7E

The unifying receiver worked fine with my Air. I'd assume all monitors would be supported since the HDMI/DVI signal is an industry standard.

I've got a rMBP and I just noticed that when entered the mode to create a screenshot of any screen area (CMD+Shift+4), the cursor is lagging terribly. What the hell? Anyone got the same problem?

edit: Currently annotating some (not that big) PDFs. Slow as fuck too. There's even a slight delay when I simply select an annotation. Typing something in is like typing on my iPhone 3GS running iOS 5: I type a few words, nothing happens for two seconds, then they appear all of a sudden.

I don't know if it's a software problem or the GPU is simply to weak. Either way, it doesn't really feel like I'm using a supposed premium product. More like some cheap-ass 200€ notebook from a supermarket.

Also, I think so far I didn't complain about the fact that waking it up from standby takes far longer than my five-year-old SSD-less MBP. And because of the lack of the front LED, I never know if it's actually working. Is it waking up? Or is the battery completely empty? I always have to wait several seconds for anything to happen (keyboard/screen backlight) whereas the LED of my old MBP offered me permanent feedback about what was going on. But hey, fuck usability, it's all about the look.

It takes too long to decide between search and URL on mine, but eventually works. I'm getting very, very tired of this unified search/location field.

Does anyone here use Power Nap when on battery? I'm just curious about what kind of loss in battery life you are noticing with the computer in sleep mode but with it enabled.

I dunno if this is the right place to put this, but does anyone know what happened to the Garageband Jam Packs?

I just realized that the loops in G-Band are royalty free and would love to get as many as I can. Did they just eventually merge them into Garageband? So if you have Garageband '11, you have all the loops?

You need to buy Mainstage as well.

Does anyone else have massive lag problems with Mountain Lion? Like it'll become really unresponsive for big blocks of time, and tonnes of Kernal Panics?

my first reaction is that you have a bad hard drive. do you have a hard drive in your Mac or is it an SSD?

run the "verify disk" operation in disk utility and see if anything comes up.

that's messed up.

Well, If I were in this situation, I would either bring it the Apple store right away (have a backup already made at home) or I would completely format the hard drive myself and restore with a new install of Mountain Lion and then restore my user directory during setup.

If it still did it after the restore at home, I would bring it in to get repaired or replaced.

Certainly not the experience of most of us. I assume bad RAM/bad disk/corrupted files. I would boot off of memtest and run that for a while until I was sure the RAM was good.

Repair the disk until it runs clean.

Then I'd reinstall from a fresh copy of ML downloaded from Apple.

3 days left of October and no sight of iTunes 11 :(

I've been refreshing the iTunes page multiple times per day since the last Apple event and every time a new item appears in Reeder I get a little excited. My life has become nothing but a string of disappointments.

If iTunes had been delayed, I'd assume they'd secretly change the iTunes page to say November or something. Since it's still October, it HAS to come out by Wednesday... right?? RIGHT?? I just want this thing so I can see if Bowtie will still work. The developer doesn't seem interested in keeping it updated sadly and that's sadly sad. I'm an avid user of Bowtie and take advantage of its ability to use HTML5 and JavaScript for some really nice looking status on my desktop that still remains on screen when in Mission Control. I have it have a clock and time so when in a fullscreen app I just have to swipe up to see the time in a flash. I'd hate to lose that.

I've been wondering if Dashboard would be a viable replacement. But it would rely totally on whether Dashboard widgets update in the background or not.

Check the energy perferences. Preventing System Sleep will keep the network up. It will also drain the battery on a portable.

If you have a recent MacBook Air or Retina Pro, 'power nap' will keep it connected periodically, even if the system is asleep, though I think applications have to be written to support it.

I wish my MBA would actually wake up instantly from sleep. Instead, there's about an 8-10 second lag. Doesn't seem like we're at iDevice levels yet.
