I am not sure if this is related to Lion at all, but for some reason while in Bootcamp my keyboard will no longer light up and my brightness and sound keys no longer function. Any ideas?

Hey guys, is there any way to watch recorded shows and movies on my directv dvr on my Mac? The PS3 can see the folders and items, but it can't play any of the videos. I wonder if the Mac could do so.

If the video is still on the DVR then it's in a raw protected format, possibly MPEG-2. You can't do anything with it without having an app on the DVR that can transcode it and send it to your devices.

I had a TiVo S3 once and was able to download some HD content (Huge files) to my computer via an official feature (Which stripped the DRM from the files) and convert them to H.264 with Handbrake. But your DVR needs to actually offer this as a feature. Otherwise the files are just going to be unreadable by anything but the DVR.

Is there some sort of terminal command I can use to delete all non-standard fonts? Everytime I try and use text in Photoshop I get the beachball and PS crashes. Same when I try and use Word it crashes loading the fonts. When I try and check for corrupted fonts in Font Book it crashes.

Just remove all the ones you don't use from ~/Library/Fonts/

And if you're careful and only remove ones you know aren't stock, HD/Library/Fonts/

Then reboot.

So I'm reformatting my hard drive and redoing my bootcamp. I've read that ML has introduced some boot camp errors. Is there anything I need to be aware of when reinstalling today?

What's proper protocol for synching an iPhone with a new computer? Will it save my text history, or will I lose it all? The rest of my data I can figure out thanks to iCloud.

Do iCloud first just in case. Then make sure you sync it with a version of iTunes that has not been used to play it safe. You will only lose media that you have not purchased from Apple that is stored on your phone.

Anybody out there with a Macbook specced near mine using 10.8.2? I'm interested in hearing how its performing.

2009 Macbook
Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz
Nvidia 2900m integrated graphics
2 GB Ram

Long story short, I installed 10.8 over a weekend, then came to the harsh realization that i could no longer use Quicken '04 on it as Rosetta got axed. So I spent the rest of the weekend reverting back to Snow Leopard until I found an alternative. (Looks like I'm going with iBank, but that's beside my point)

What I noticed immediately is how much better my machine ran under 10.6. Has anyone with my machine seen performance improvements with this latest release?

Quad: no idea about trim for hybrid. I don't think so. I didn't do anything. It's just a big cache.

As for speed, I found lion to be a bit laugh and less responsive in parts, on my non-unibody MacBook pro. Stuff like wake from sleep had a delay, a few spinning balls. Mountain lion fixed some of these ,but I got some lag in areas such as finder (which became a bit crazy as well) hopefully latest supplemental update tightens things up.

Overall, I've been happy with mountain lion, but snow leopard was the last really snappy mac OS x for me. Mind you I have a really old MBP.

Ever since upgrading to 10.8 I have been having occasional video cut outs. Screen will just go black and then blue and then my desktop will reappear.

It's kinda unsettling.

Got my MBPr last night but it didn't have Mountain Lion on it.

I went through the little request a free upgrade code paperwork.

How long does it take to get an approval email?

Is mountain lion stable and worth it? I read really mixed reviews on the comments section.

No trouble what so ever and all the added iOS syncing functionality is worth it alone!

And shouldn't take too long..

So it turns out that Mountain Lion was installed but not updated.

I learned this when trying ti update iphoto which kept saying I'm not in 10.8.2.

I kept trying to do software update and it wouldn't take me to anything. I ended up having to goto Apple.com support and find the update and the hotfix released a few days ago.

Is this normal?

How do I distinguish which products require Apple.com for updates and which ones can be done in the app store?

This seems to maybe be a bug - how did you go to check for update? Apple menu, or directly to the AppStore? Sometime I need to go through the "Software Update" for the OS to double check for updates. With very few exception, Apple delivers everything through the AppStore, or iTunes (iPod/iPad/iPhone, etc, updates).

Did both software update an Appstore direct. Neither had me update to 10.8.2.

Hopefully it was a one off bug.

I was sitting there for awhile figuring out why the burned dvd of windows 8 wouldn't work in bootcamp. Forgot that to properly burn an iso you have to put the burn speed at 2.4x. Dumb.

So I have a question, is there a way to disable using EXIF information when displaying images in finder? Basically I want to see the image's proper orientation instead of what it should be to determine if I need to rotate it before uploading it to the web. Finder likes to use the EXIF data to properly rotate images but when you upload those images they are screwed up on most sites. Don't know if this is a ML feature because I never ran into it before.

Not really. I usually burn things at a high speed, and W7 DVD-R worked fine on my brother's MBP.

I'm somewhat bemused by the near lack of any OS benchmarks whenever a new version of OSX is released. This in spite of countless reviews testifying that the upgrade is somehow faster and more optimized. What it's faster or optimized at is usually left to the reader's (and possibly the reviewer's) imagination.

Last time I was at work I had Mountain Lion running on a Core 2 Duo iMac with roughly similar specs and the machine was definitely usable. It didn't feel faster than Snow Leopard, though, and I didn't have any time to check as to whether it was using more or less RAM than under 10.6..x

That said, I wouldn't downgrade just to continue using Rosetta and Quicken. iBank looks nice, and the Quicken guys are still relevant after buying mint.com.

I know this isn't really the place but there isn't a general OSX topic that I know of.

Anyway, does anyone know of a good free program to write DVD's from AVI/MP4. I have been using a program called Burn for a while to just get it done regardless of quality but every MP4 I throw into it comes out in 4:3 instead of whatever aspect it was already which makes everything look, well, stupid.

Are there any good free alternatives?

You sure you don't have force 4:3 checked? There's a preference for it.

Alternatives includes simplyburns, liquidcd, and idvd.

Update:

Firstly, I'm loving OSX so far. It's a learning curve from Windows but so far it's nice. The gestures feel fluid and so far, I haven't missed not having a mouse. I do miss the snap to side and explorer from Windows though. Those two are nice features. I'm also realizing how often I was using home/end keys. I keep looking for them when typing.

Now I need some info.

I installed Win8 via boot camp and got it loaded up. Now can I installed Parallels, point it to the BootCamp install and finish the rest of my software installs via Parallels? If I do that, will those software installs become part of the bootcamp image so that if I need to go native bootcamp, it's all there?

Any tips or gotchas with parallels and win 8 anyone want to share?

1.) Aero Snap is available in many MANY OS X apps. BetterTouchTool for one is the best. It includes the option as well as hotkeys and gestures for anything and everything.

2.) Home and End are Fn+Left and Right. Page Up/Down are Fn+Up/Down (Not Command like mentioned above. Sorry, Kawaii.)

3.) Yes, Parallels has an option to import the BootCamp partition and make it a dual-boot VM that you can use either booted up or from OS X. I don't know how far it integrates the OS X compatibility when you are booted into Windows though.

I though Facebook was integrated into ML? Why don't I receive FB notification updates in the ML Notification sidebar?

That site is basically $9 cheaper than Apple's normal price for their refurbished of the same model.

I'd rather order direct myself.

Command up and down for fine for me though.
You know what. Command+Up/Down do work for Home and End, but to do Page Up and Down you need to use Fn. Which also works for Up and Down to do the same thing. So there's two ways it seems. But only for up and down, not left and right. (Since left and right in a browser type app will go Back and Forward instead.)

Fake edit: Scratch that, Command+Left and Right does work IF you are in a text box. Like this one I am typing in. But when the text box is not focused, it does Back and Forward. At least in Chrome.

Either way, Fn works no matter what. So you might as well just get used to that. (If your keyboard has Fn, which it probably does if it doesn't have actual Page, Home and End keys.)

Guise, what do you think it's the best way to throw Gmail into Notification Center, without having Mail running?

Maybe sparrow? I was wishing I didn't have to run anything, besides Safari.

Some websites now request access to NC, so I suppose that there is that thing now (hypem.com is my only example so far). Can't Gmail use that?

jts

...hate me...
jts: Couldn't you enable notifications in Chrome/Safari, and leave it on gmail.com?
I don't know how I go about doing that.

I've read all over the place that you can enable desktop notifications for Safari but so far that is merely a fable to me. I've went to Gmail settings, but it says this:

Desktop notifications in Chrome
Gmail desktop notifications let you know when you have a new email or Chat message. When you enable these notifications, you'll see a pop-up when new messages arrive so that even if you're not looking at your Gmail, you'll still know when someone wants to talk to you. For now, these notifications are available only if you use Google Chrome as your browser

Now, while having to have a tab always running Gmail isn't ideal either, it would be better than nothing. I also have the latest Growl if it helps.

I just wish there was something so simple and elegant as the Facebook integration into NC.

So getting a new harddrive tomorrow to replace my wife's internal on her macbook pro.

Which software do you guys recommend to make a perfect clone of her current drive on the new one?

CarbonCopyCloner or Superduper? Are they basically the same these days?

Windows 8 experience so far:

Boot camp:
Install works fine but not fully supported
Boot camp control panel does not work
Rebooting back into OSX is fickle. Often you have to clear the RAM before getting access to the boot menu again

In Parallels:
Pointed Parallels to the Boot Camp install
Was alerted that this OS is not supported
Cohesive mode does work

Overall, Win8 on a MBP is not a good experience and is probably not ideal until officially supported by Apple.

I'll blow away the bootcamp and install Win7 for my corporate apps with Parallels. Hopefully that all works well. Such a shame because I quite like Win 8.
