Overall, Win8 on a MBP is not a good experience and is probably not ideal until officially supported by Apple.

I'll blow away the bootcamp and install Win7 for my corporate apps with Parallels. Hopefully that all works well. Such a shame because I quite like Win 8.
You should probably wait until 8 is actually released and both Apple and Parallels have time to write up their drivers for support.

I really hope Apple's BootCamp drivers for 8 include gestures. Though I'll probably be sticking with 7 until I'm required to upgrade just to play some game or something. (Which will be a pretty long time I think.)

How do I get the 'time remaining' on my battery, rather than the percentage?

Google gave me some third party stuff and I downloaded one that was free and it looked like ass.

I'll have to revisit it at a later date.

For now I'm trying to get on a single laptop to get everything done. After using this thing, I don't want anything to do with the thinkpad i was using :(

I did get coherence mode working but really, I'll probably better off sticking with Win7 for bootcamp until a later date. Parallels is pretty sick though. Impressed.

edit: Decided to stick it out like this and see how it goes for a bit. Will try to keep this thread updated for those wanting to give it a shot.

Recently got a macbook pro 15" (not with retina, but the new line)

I wanted to up the 4gb ram. Can anyone help me out with some questions. How high can i go? Does it max at 8GB or could i put more? Is there a spedific type of ram i need to purchase??

So I read a little about the native Airport thing you can use for creating a wifi signal from a Mac, and it was pretty straightforward... Except that my iPhone has troubles catching the signal, and that even when it does internet doesn't work properly, if at all.

Any idea of what could be the problem? Should there not be any solution, is there any third-party soft that would allow me to create a Wifi signal from my Mac?

Thanks for the help.

Found the solution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWsv24PrtmA

You have to re-order the networks in the network system prefs.

I use Pages constantly. Create documents on Mac, shows people on iPad (via iCloud).

(But there should be a one purchase for all versions of the iWork apps tbh)

...hate me...
Is there a way to make Safari start prompting me where I want to put some downloaded files generated by a javascript or something?

Not sure if I'm making myself clear. But here's the deal: on this website, if I download the files I want by simply left clicking on them, they will go automatically to the downloads folder, which I do not want.
If I right click on them and try to choose "download this file as" (or whatever the wording in english is), it will not try to download the file itself but some "module.php" or something that generates the download link. Clearly I'm not very educated about this stuff but I guess you'll understand.

Ultimately, I have no other option but to download them to the downloads folder first and then will have to manually go there and put them on the correct locations. Ugh. It's unnecessary Finder hell.

Parallels update:

Installed office for Mac and its workable. Now I only have 2 apps that don't have Mac versions so I'm running those via parallels.

If I can get used to this, I'll be happy.

iMessage being able to integrate with yahoo IM and Cisco jabber was a nice surprise. Frankly works better for those two than actual texts.

What's the drawback is letting Outlook be my primary for email/contacts/calendar?

I like it way more than Microsoft Word, but that's coming from somebody who uses it for actual word processing and no sort of "let's design stuff" needs (I use actual design software for that).

People design in Word?
There are days I am not surprised I have a job. Today is one of those days.

I am finding Mountain Lion great so far... with one MAJOR drawback for me (as a developer). They have removed the GUI for managing NFS mounts...

Whilst not the end of the world (can still do everything via the console) it just seems a weird thing to do. Makes life harder for creative/developer types.

Anyway, great OS. I use linux (Ubuntu), Windows (7) and OSX (Mountain Lion) everyday and ML is defo the smoothest experience of them all.

So I'm having an issue with OS X messages. I have uploaded a profile picture for myself and it snycs across my address book and my iPad messages app. However, it doesn't for my Macbook Air. I've tried "set profile picture" but nothing seems to work. It's just slightly annoying, anyone have any advice or tricks? I've searched but no one else seems to have the issue, haha.

Question, every now and then my internet hangs for about 10 seconds. When it comes back, even though I have internet again, iMessage won't connect to g-chat and gives me the little lightening bolt. Even when restarting the program. I have to entirely reboot the computer to get it working.

There any way to fix this?

Has anyone who's using Safari in ML (10.8.2) and 1Password run into random Safari crashes (no crash report or anything, just it force quitting all of a sudden)?

Been happening for a while now. >.>

Been having some issues lately where the computer freezes in a fullscreen app or when Notification Center is activated, and I can't get out of them. So the last resort was to restart.

Mac OS thread of Mac OS noobs

It falls to the second page of my subscriptions a lot.

Ah cheers, I will check that out next time.

You sure you don't have force 4:3 checked? There's a preference for it.

Alternatives includes simplyburns, liquidcd, and idvd.

Nope, it is strange, everything else I stick in it generally works like a charm so I can do it quickly without having to worry, but for some reason MP4's keep coming out forced 4:3 and it doesn't seem to matter where the MP4 comes from.

I will check out those you suggested though, I did try sticking them in iDVD but it was going to take hours to do, at this point I might have to convert the video into something else and then shove it back into Burn and hope it works, lol.

What e-mail applications do you guys use?

I'm currently using Outlook. I wished notifications showed up in Notification Center but whatever.

I use the default mail app. I like it - it's simple, elegant an gets the job done. That said, full screen compose is annoying. And why do we no longer have spinning wheels to show that it's checking for mail?

Also, does windows have a quick look function? How does one survive without it? One of the best features of OSX.

I like the default mail app too but the program makes shutting down a 2 minute event on ML. Didn't have a problem with it on Lion.

We use Google Apps for Business at work, and I just use the Gmail web client. I like it better than Outlook or Mail.app. I used Sparrow for awhile, but I found myself constantly opening my browser to access my calendar, contacts, etc. anyway, so I just abandoned it. I generally don't like email programs anyway, so ditching them altogether has not exactly been much of a sacrifice.

At my last job where we just had a standard email server, I ended up setting up a Gmail account and automatically forwarding stuff to it from my actual work account, and using the "send as" feature to send email from my work email address. Then I still had all the benefits of Gmail's label and search features. Obviously, this dog might not hunt in certain corporate environments.

I get the same thing, but it,s much worse. Like, I'll restart my computer, and it will try to close the open apps, bit it times out because mail takes so long. I had this since lion. It takes ages.

If I just open mail, though and close it, it closes quickly. I looked t activity, and it always seems like it's gmail related. Activity keeps saying gmail is logging out.... Let me know if I'm onto something here.

I check most of my email through my phone.

To respond we use outlook at work (which blows) and my work ecal is also on outlook, but the native apps on OS X can access both of those and when away from work that is what I use to respond to emails or make changes to my calendar.

Interesting. I have a Gmail account and a POP account in Apple Mail. When I get home I'm going to remove Gmail and see what happens.

I've been having similar issues on my new MBA... Freezing in fullscreen apps including Netflix on Safari and in Chrome and Numbers. Requires a power off every time

I also have a long delay when rebooting, but I always quit all my programs before rebooting.

I have Gmail and have Mail use POP instead of IMAP where instead of Mail modifying the email while it's still on the server, it downloads it to the computer. Since Gmail does the first Junk sweep (And finds 99.9% of it) then Mail gets the rest of the real email and the Junk filter catches the last .1%. (The way I've had it for 11 years instead of Lion's automatic IMAP setup.)

How do you look at activity? I've wondered if there was a way I could see verbosely what OS X was trying to do while shutting down to see if I could find a process that was hanging.

Interesting. I have a gmail account via imap and a separate pop account also.

Before ML, activity was accessed by cmd+0 (zero) or something like that. It was a separate window (look under window menu).

It's really useful, tells you what it is explicitly doing like synchronising an account or something.

But I think it changed in ML and you turn it on and it shows the activity in a pane at the bottom left. Or that might be in addition to the separate window.

I'm away from my mac at the moment so I'll have to check when I'm home.

Edit: for activity of thesystem, I think you can open console, which will tell you what the system is up to verbosely.

When do you do this? While it's trying to shut down?

I think GMail might be the problem. I disabled my GMail account and left the POP account as default and shutdown was almost instantaneous.

I'll test it a few more times and report back.

EDIT: Tried it a few more times and I'm still getting same issue. Damn it!!!

If you mean console, no, I don't really use it that much.

If you mean the activity window in Mail, yes, you can use it when closing mail to see what is causing possible issues. I guess you could also use console to help diagnose slow shutdonw problems too. Why not just try it?

Yeah, I think it was gmail as per my initial reply above. Last I checked, slow mail close was due to gmail taking forever to 'log out'.

It's not every time though, so it will be hard to track down exactly why.

Anyone knows a free Twitter app that allows me to follow someone without an account? I don't intend to create one, I'd just like to be notified when a very small number of users tweet something. Optimally without having the app running constantly.
