Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Move your Mac even further ahead

My little brother's computer (2008 MBP) always seems to stutter on flash video playback. Much more than my 2011. Would he benefit from a clean OS install of ML, or does that not really matter on Macs? It's the only problem he has on the Mac.

Yup, that's the first sign of the hard-drive dying.

Well it's worth a try, Macs tend to get cluttered over time (especially if you dont uninstall Apps properly) and the performance will deteriorate.

come on dont be so negative! ;)

huh?

It's been stuttering for years. We tried to fix it with an upgrade to Lion but that didn't seem to solve it. At least not in Firefox or Safari (though he hasn't tried Chrome yet). In fact, flash video stuttering has been common on Macs for a long time, but I haven't noticed much of a problem on my 2011 MBP. Google it. There's a reason why long-time MBP owners have a strong dislike or Flash, and it's not because the shit has a history of good performance.

Anyway, it's not a HDD issue. Not sure why you mentioned that you thought it was.

I guess I'm just wondering if the new OS has anything under the hood (performance improvements) that may alleviate the issues, and if a clean install is necessary on Macs like it is on Winboxes.

alright. If a straight upgrade yields the same issues, I'll just clean install it for him. Hopefully the former will be okay. Formatting and reloading always fucking sucks.

No, Expose is fucking amazing again now.
You can make it behave like it did pre-Lion.

Megaton, by far the worst thing in Lion was them fucking with Expose.

I thought about a little more and the flash performance on Macs went to shit when they introduced / started to rely on GPU acceleration. It could very well be that the 2008 MBP is simply too old / weak. I have a 2010 MBP and the performance (and battery life) has never been the same after Flash and Firefox introduced GPU acceleration.

yea, it could be. I just have a hard time accepting that a 2008 C2D can't handle flash, when my 2005 C1D Dell running Vista has no problems running the same 480p videos.

fucking flash, man.

Huh. I havent taken my OS course yet but I thought flash video streams into RAM unless you have a small amount of RAM and it has to page out. I could be completely talking out of my ass though. Lol

it's not the HDD.

Eum, I might be misunderstanding what you're trying to say, but that's not the point of full screen mode...

If you want to do that just stretch the window to the size you like and don't use full screen?
It was there in the last version. It was really useful for dealing with sites like GAF that stretch to fill the whole screen. Made it much easier to read.
Oh well.

Anyone got word on the broken redeem codes? Do you need to contact support, or will they send out some new ones?

Has anybody here received their free upgrade through the Up To Date program yet? I registered a couple hours ago and haven't heard anything.

Maaaannn.... still waiting on my upgrade code from Apple. Since it's only $20 I'm tempted to just buy it and get busy with it already!
but I won't

Commiserating brofist. Hopefully soon...

Wait, they fixed Expose? :O

I kinda regret selling my MBP so soon now :( but then again that means more monies for a retinaz MBP or a new iMac if they do a refresh this year.

Well, I made it. I always like trying out safari for a bit whenever there's a bigger update. One stupid little thing that's nice is the smooth loading bar.

Just wait Im sure a hack will come out.

I hope so, I'm not really into hacks, usually I'm content with what's offered but Airplay to me is easily the best feature of ML and to cut off every with pre 2011 Macs is stupid. If it runs poorly because we can't handle it then let is run poorly, don't lock out the feature. Plus the streaming music only feature is awesome

Hmm, I have to head to the airport in just over three hours and will be gone for a month. Taking my MacBook with me. Not sure if I should try to install before I go. How long does the whole process take?

Noobish question, but this I just got my MBP last month and this is going to be the first time I upgrade the OS of any computer that I've owned so is there anything that I need to do prior to upgrading to make sure all of my information is safe and able to be re-downloaded?

Hour? Depends on your download speed.

Really wish they handled this like lions up-to-date program. It was instant last year, this year I see nothing but used codes, and waiting for emails. Oh well I will patiently wait, but something is telling me to hold off a few weeks to see if there are any major bugs.
