Mac OSX Noob thread of OSX noobs

What do you mean default size? I think it reopens to what you last had it at. If you want to quickly toggle sizes then hit the green + at the top left of the window.

One of the Fn keys will have a Spaces symbol. You can do that or use Crrl + arrows or numbers.

First go to the Keyboard preferences and make sure the F keys functions as F keys is on.

Then go to the Spaces preference and make sure you've set Spaces to activate when you hit an F key.

I just recently discovered the magnificence of hot corners (somewhere in Preferences). It's like magic with Expose and Spaces.

I suggest using that instead of the Fn keys.

How do you share a single Address Book across two users on the same computer?
Move the address book file into a shared folder and then create a symbolic link to the file on both accounts. Or you can just dump your contacts online and then setup both accounts to sync to the online list.

Shift + Ctrl + Eject will turn the display off and lock it (10.6+ only iirc).

If you need something for 10.5/10.4 or you want to customize the hotkey, there's LockTight.

Or you could set up a screen saver hot corner and make SS ask for password upon return.

Anyone know why 720p mkvs all run terribly on my mac now? Plex, mplayer osx, vlc, anything outputs totally choppy and out of sync with the audio. My pc has worse specs yet plays the files fine :/

I'm having trouble with 1080p mkvs as well.

So I've got a momentus XT hybrid HD arriving tomorrow.

Any suggestions on how to exchange my HD and restore?

Last time I did this, I used SuperDuper to clone, but infoworld.com was recommending not to do that (don't know why). Is a Time Machine restore actually a clone, or does it migrate data?

I know Time Machine doesn't actually save everything, so not sure which is the best way to go.

Also, important to reset PRAM after an HD install?

So that's how you sleep the display without using hot corners! I've always wondered why there wasn't any way to do it without hot corners, LOL.

What do you mean by "now"? As it in used to play fine before? If so, what changes have been made to your system since the last time it played fine?

Are you supposed to calibrate the battery on a MBP or something?

Been using my computer for about an hour on battery now. Watching some flash tutorials on Adobe CS5. I have bluetooth off, wifi on, screen brightness at 75%, open apps are Chrome-Mail-Dictionary-iCal-iTunes.

and my battery is saying 2h30min remaining right now. I would think when Apple claims 9 hours of battery life, it would be with exactly what I'm doing right now... that is, light internet tasks with a few non-demanding apps open.

I have yet to run my battery down to 0 though. Are you supposed to do this?

what video format are those tutorials in?

also, the screen brightness is at 50% for the numbers listed by apple. for those to count, no video is playing back. just browsing and occasional email. I’ve managed to get around 6 or 7ish hours on my old 13” Macbook Pro (advertised at 7 at the time) doing that.

Once I started watching video or putting screen brightness up or playing music, the remaining time drops a bit.

The video tutorials ARE flash, and the battery indicator jumps down to about an hour remaining when I'm actually watching the tutorial. When I close out, the battery jumps back up and right now it's telling me 3h32min.

Basically the time remaining thing seems to be wildly inaccurate. But I guess the things you do on a computer are wildly different when it comes to power consumption.

well that’s your problem right there. (I wasn’t sure if the tutorials were about Flash as part of CS5 but were rendered in another format - I had to ask)

Flash sucks up battery life like nobody’s business on OS X.

Around 4 or 5 years ago, Apple started publishing optimistic but still attainable numbers for battery usage. So, in order to get those advertised results, you can have wifi and a web browser open, but your screen has to be at 50% or lower, no music, no video, etc… It’s possible but you won’t get those results every day since video and music and content creation are big parts of owning a high end laptop.

I remember seeing results showing the 7 hour batteries on older macbook pros giving out around 3 hours when doing a torture test of DVD playback and screen at max brightness.

so the new mac mini - how does the nvidia 320 handle 720 video?

it would also replace the last the windows machine have in my home which would be nice.

My old mini does 720p fine on youtube. The new chip should have no issue.

Also, when the fuck did they announce this? I totally missed it. Looks like a kick ass machine, but having the power brick built in is a concern for me :| My mini already can get hot as hell when playing WoW or SC2.

I'd totally upgrade to the new mini though, with the fastest chip possible and then I'd throw in 8gb of ram on my own... Might do that soon if this job I interviewed for today comes through :lol

So I managed to grab a Mini 2.0Ghz 9400M for 300€... huzzah.

I waited years for my first Mac, and now I got my second one within 1 month :/

I had a few questions and doubts for OSX-GAF, but since this was closed, I had to find out on my own, and I will now share.

#1 can I install OSX snow leopard on it from my MBP 10.6 DVD? :lol The answer is no.
#2 can I swap memories between my MBP an my Mini and combine them as I wish? Damn yes.

My MBP had 2x2GB and the Mini had 1x1GB. Now I have 2GB+1GB on the MBP and 1x2GB on the Mini :D

Also, it's fucking hell to open up an old/current Mini just for replacing the RAM. Jesus. Glad to see the new one has that covered.

I may be wrong but you shouldn't mix memory like that. They run better with identical pairs.

Or at least that's how it was with my old MBP.

I heard that in the past, but I believe that's mainly FUD from manufacturers and retailers. I don't know.

It works, the 3GB are recognized, both SODIMMs are DDR3 @ 1066MHz, I won't worry about it.

its not FUD, they run better in pairs. however i do believe you can have 2 different pairs with no loss of dual channel functionality, which i think you have.

So I installed the 500GB SSD/HD hybrid momentus XT into my early 2008 non-unibody MacBook Pro.

It flies.

Now given, I had previously installed a 640GB HD that I yanked out of a Portable External enclosure, and I got a huge drop in performance of my HD with that. I think because it wasn't meant as an internal drive, or something.

Anyway, here's my stock MBP (250GB 5400rpm), on 10.5.7:
b04b4978e4d5927a1c1545fb92bc1209.png

Then After I upgraded to 10.6.2:
9b0c8e8de8562e5e84e69ec61387ff8d.png

Then after installing the 640GB 5400rpm (on 10.6.3):
8ba397e074536c0042bb663487d817cc.png

And now after installing the momentus XT (10.6.4):
446b82a388e1b5705ccdc26007ce1758.png

I know Xbench and other HD benchmarks won't really utilise the SSD cache for this test, but it goes to show how much my last HD sucked. It was fast to use, but sucked for little incremental stuff.

The Momentus XT is fast. Even on first boot (no system cache), it will open many applications much faster. If I've opened it before, possibly even on a previous boot (I;m not sure), apps are typically one bounce. I can again multitask. It's like I've got a brand new computer!

Guys, I need some GIF animation program on OSX. I use Photoshop mostly, but animations are limited to 500 frames on PS and I want to export something a little longer than that.
I'm making this gif on After effects importing a .mov video, but its GIF exporting options are not that good either.

Any tips?

My first MacBook arrived yesterday. It's so nice! It took me a few minutes to realize I had to press down on the trackpad to click something (as opposed to tapping on a PC laptop). :lol Off to a wonderful start!

I have just a question about installing software. I downloaded Firefox to use as my default browser. But I don't quite understand how Mac software is installed, or I guess mounted? After opening the dmg file, I guess it installed, but then I get a box with the Firefox icon and an arrow sign pointing to the Applications folder. Am I supposed to move the icon over to it as well? On the desktop there is a drive that says Firefox that I would like removed as well.

All I really want to do is download a program, install it, and then delete the install file (like with a PC). What is the procedure for that on a Mac?

Yes, to install the vast majority of apps you mount the image (.dmg), move the app to your Applications folder (of which there is usually a shortcut inside the DMG), and then unmount the image. Simple as that.

A few have Windows-y installations where they need to put files in other places, but it's mostly simple.

FYI, you can set it to "tap to click" under System Preferences > Trackpad

there are more and more applications that are getting transmitted as zip files. then you don't need to mount an image to get access to the app bundle. just unzip and the app is already there and you can move it to whatever folder you want.

on rare occasion, you will need to run an installer wizard. typically if the app needs to install shit to the main Library folder.

For clarity, the .dmg is a "disk image" file. Essentially, it's a self-contined 'virtual' drive. By clicking on it, it mounts, kind of like plugging in a USB drive. Inside it are the files. Most applications are completely self-contained, so you just drag that file wherever you want, but typically that is best in the Applications folder which is a system level folder above user directories.

Awesome. Thanks for clarifying how installing works. I guess it's not really "installing" then if the apps are in self-contained virtual drives or in zip files. So it's safe to assume to "uninstall," just move the app to the trash bin? I am starting to love this thing. :D And thanks, Futureman, for the info on the tap-to-click setting.

Yeah, Flash will do that to you.

Your MacBook can't really predict when you're going to start watching a Flash video and future-proof its battery meter for full accuracy.

My favorite part is that playing TF2 as high as you can get it is less demanding of the battery than YouTube's 360p videos.

Pretty much.

Most apps will leave a 'preference' file, which is a small text file that is red when an app opens that details settings for the app. It's not a big deal to accumulate those, however.

Another helpful hint is that if you want to find a setting, you can actually search for things in the system preferences window. Type tap to click, for example, and it will highlight the trackpad options.

But on that subject, what's the best way to preview or browse through GIFs on OSX? The Preview app only shows the first frame :(

Heh, joking aside. An animated GIF takes up much more space and looks much worse than the video it's taken from. I can't think of a reason you'd want that many frames in a GIF since it would be too big for the internet (GAF Mods would ban you so fast.) and any other place you'd want animation would do better with a video file. Or even Flash. What do you need more than 500 frames for?

JustLooking. I associate all GIF's with it. Also, a QuickLook plugin called AnimatedGIF_QL will do the same for viewing in the Finder. Get both of them. Google for them.

Nah, I was trying to make a gif out of a section of the Nintendo conference and it was too long. Ended up reducing fps to 10 and it is around 350 or so. :D

GaF, i have a Mac problem, i don't know what to do, so i seek aid.

The machine:
iMac 24" purchased at the end of 2008, with OSX Leopard(not snow leopard).

The issue:
The problem has been degenerating since it first came up.
The mac arbitrarily "freezes" with the rainbow loading sphere (you know, the equivalent of the hourglass on Windows)while doing the silliest things: sometimes opening a folder with 2 pictures, sometimes browsing the web(even simply Google), sometimes opening a video-- othertimes i can use Photoshop with a 3000x3000 image for 2 hours without any problem.
Recently anyway, the problem is almost costant and it presents itself after 5 minutes or less.
If i wait, usually, it unfreezes(sometimes it take like 20 minutes)just to freeze again at the next click, though.
Temperatures are in the norm.

What i have tried:
Ok, let me start by saying: I did not have an Applecare: Yeah, i'm a piece of sh°t, a dumbass etc etc, but let's try to be positive and constructive here :lol.
Reset - tried.
Partial format - tried.
Total format - tried.
Hardware Test from the boot disc - tried, no problem found.
Hardware Test from the motherboard(complete HW test) - tried, no problems found.
Permissions - repaired(multiple times).
Open it up to clean away the dust accumulated inside - done(with a tutorial help on YouTube :lol)

WTF should i try? Multiple people have discouraged me from going to a Genius Bar.

I thought it maybe the ram, maybe it doesn't work properly and that's why after a few minutes of operations, it freezes.
what do you guys think?

What i don't understand is:
If the problem is the software, why it persist after a complete format?
If the problem is the HW, why the MoBo HW test doesn't find anything wrong?

The problem must be either SW or HW! I'm a noob with technology and it's driving me nuts!

Could be a failing hard drive.

As in maybe it's spinning slower than usual, but no actual fault yet.

If this is the case, perhaps try SMART Utility.

Mine's behaving normally and that program says my internal drive is failing. 3 years old with no issues.

Yeah GAF! Today I bought my first iMac, and I'm loving it so much! I bought it because Logic only runs on Mac.

Anyway, just two quick questions. 1) Is Safari at the moment the best browser? 2) In my dock, in the downloads map, it shows every single thing you download in the list. My girlfriends is a bit annoyed by that, and I'm as well. Any way to change it?

Cheers!
