Mac OSX Noob thread of OSX noobs

Since yesterday the wifi in my 2011 macbook pro refuses to turn on. It shows this:
PsTYt.png
.

I've read that some people had this problem when upgrading to lion but I have been on 10.7.4 for a very long time and it just recently broke. Did the wifi card burn out?

I tried resetting the NVRAM and PRAM with Command-Option-P-R but it didn't help.

I see this fix but I'm not sure it applies to my situation:
http://www.compunoodle.com/wifi-no-hardware-installed-fix-for-os-x-lion/

Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do? I'm not in a location where it is easy to have Macs worked on, or I'd just take it in. I think I'll have to buy a usb wifi antennae but I've heard those can be really slow.

OT but how do you show remaining time next to the battery instead of percentage?

I've been using OSX for going on five years, so I'm not a 'noob', but I have a noobish question: why in the blue hell does MS Excel on the Mac suck SO MUCH? I have a brand new MBP and Excel 2011; I'm working in a spreadsheet that's about 700k and this thing is slogging through it like I'm trying to edit a 1GB Photoshop file or something. It's completely ridiculous. I tried Numbers a few years ago and found it to be completely terrible, but I might have to give it another go just to work with existing Excel stuff here in the office.

You can certainly copy + paste files using cmd+c -> cmd+v.

IF you wish to move it, cmd+c to copy, then cmd+opt+v.

There's no cmd+x cut for files, as it's a metaphor that doesn't really work for files. Cut a file? Except it doesn't get cut! It's still there! So the equivalent is copy THEN opt paste to move it.

So instead of cut/copy -> paste on Windows, you have copy -> paste/move.

Hmm I know you're right, but you're wrong!

To copy them move indicates there will be an original version in the existing location after you've moved it. The cut makes sense, as you cut something out of a magazine, then paste it on a piece of paper

It makes no sense in that if you cut the file, where is it supposed to go? It can't just disappear from the drive and reappear later. Cut implies a destructive action. Apple opted for the perceptually safe route.

Anyone using The Unarchiver? The most recent version is supposed to "nag the user more often" due to Apple's sandboxing rules. So far I've refrained from updating - how exactly does it nag?

edit: What the heck - all of a sudden, no system gestures are working, only those configured in BTT.
edit 2: In the same sudden way, they work now again. Didn't do anything.

There's also extensions to add a Chrome-like disappearing statusbar. I mean seriously, there's no reason to have it always showing down there. I love how Chrome does it. I forget what the Safari extension is called though, but I'd recommend it over the actual statusbar. Unless you like wasted space.

Using a Mac Pro.

Anyone else fans been acting funny since the update yesterday? Mine sound like their busy even when the mac is not doing anything all programs closed. It only usually kicked in when I was doing something strenuous.

EDIT: Repairing permissions seems to have fixed it.

Hey guys, I just updated my growl to 2.0. It now incorporates itself into notification centre, but so far it hasnt done so. I hear the sounds, but dont get any notifications. The apps that I have using growl are twitter, and dropbox. Any advice?

Have you checked it's enabled in Notifications in Sys Prefs?

Is there any way to hide just ONE hard drive icon from the desktop? I know how to hide all drives but there has to be a terminal command or trick to hiding just one, right?

I want to hide the media drive.

Is there any way to pause/stop fully loaded gifs in Safari 6.0.1? The Esc button would do the trick previously but it's not working anymore.

Get an extension called Ultimate Status Bar which is easily found through the extensions link under the 'Safari' heading.

Ok! Just got my Air, 8gb version, $100 app store gift card. This is my first mac, loving it so far. My question is I have all this app store credit, but I have no idea where to start looking for apps. What are some basic apps you guys would recommend?

If you need an image editor, both Pixelmator and Photoshop Elements are on the Mac App Store. Trials of each are available.

If you're into Photography and you find iPhoto limiting, you may wish to try Aperture (or Lightroom, but it's not on the App Store).

I use Soulver every day. It's somewhere between a calculator and a spreadsheet.

Apple's iWork apps are very good. Pages & Numbers will do if you don't need Word and Excel but do sometimes need what they do. Keynote is way better than PowerPoint.

Newly minted owned of a MBP after aeons on Windows.

What's the current best free solution for writing to an NTFS-based drive? NTFS Mounter did not work for some reason (app launches and shuts off immediately).

These are probably not helpful:
Stick it in a Windows computer and share it or reformat it as Exfat?

I have used NTFS-3G on MacFuse on OSX 10.6 and it worked fine.

So I have a mac mini 2,1 C2D 2.0 ghz that was upgraded to 4gb mem and an SSD, was doing pretty good in the month since I bought it.

But today the mouse cursor started acting crazy jumping around when I move it instead of animating smoothly like it was before. Only thing I did is I got a new amazon basics wired keyboard and a new digital camera and I connected both to the ports. I have not idea what could be causing this but it its infuriating. help.

Software update installs on the shut down, not the restart. It's possible it is on auto download, and had it already downloaded, and installed when you shutdown, and just needed a restart.

You can go to /Library/receipts, and there,s a huge plist in there that is a log of installations. If you can read those, the bottom entry will tell you what it last installed.

Wondered if you guys could help me. Trying to get my 17" MBP on to the latest OSX (currently on 10.6.8). I'd like to do a clean install (i.e a complete fresh re-boot). Problem is, I can't find my original OSX DVD, and add to that, when I try and download Mountain Lion from the App store, it keeps giving me errors and just will not download, even after I've seemingly purchased it.

Anyone have any ideas or can anyone advise the best way to get a fresh clean install of the latest OSX on to here in the easiest manner?

What kind of errors? Are you sure your MacBook pro can accept mountain lion? Not being able to download sounds dodgy.

Kept giving me error messages that it could not be downloaded at the time. Something to do with a server error. Luckily it's finally downloading now.

Can I burn this install on to a DVD and re-boot off of it, or do I need an original boot DVD?

I don,t know why people ask for help, but never report the errors. If it's a server error, then wait for the server as you have.

As for boot DVD, installing lion or mountain lion, to my knowledge, installs a separate boot recovery partition to negate the need for a boot DVD. But if you want something, the installer inside the download file can be used to put on a USB stick. Not sure if it can be booted from, but you have to retrieve it before you run it, because the installation itself will delete the installer.

Google how to get to it, or otherwise just backup the installer for now. For my money, I don't think you'll need it unless you want to install it on other machines.

At least that's how I think it all goes down. Someone may want to clarify/confirm.

I have read that you can burn it to a dual layer DVD, you need to burn the same image as you'd put on a USB drive (did three Lion and three Mountain Lion installs via USB).

USB will be a lot faster than DVD.

Yeah they need a dual layer disc.

Make sure to Show Package Contents on the download and you are looking for InstallESD and you want to use Disk Utility to either burn that to dvd or to "restore" an 8 gig usb stick

I am looking for a recepie book that will sync between all my iOS and osx devices. I am currently just using pages but am wondering if there is a more dedicated software for the task?!

I somewhat got the feeling with the iPhoto, Safari, Podcasts app, iOS 6.01, etc. update rollout that took place last week that they were originally supposed to be updates that would coincide with iTunes 11.
