Mac OSX Noob thread of OSX noobs

So last night I booted my new MBP in 64-bit mode and it worked great. No broken apps that I could find in the short time I tried it out.

But what are the drawbacks? Lack of Rosetta? I just tried to find some old PPC only apps on my HD, but I can't seem to. So maybe I just don't use any? How can I search in Spotlight for apps that require Rosetta?

Are there any other drawbacks? Should I go to the trouble of changing the boot mode to always boot 64-bit? Or should I not bother? I know it's probably been discussed into oblivion. But now that I actually own a 64-bit EFI capable Mac, I am curious to try it out.

Heehee.

On the one hand, this shit is awesome and everyone should see it.

On the other, I'm surely not gonna make a thread about it. It's not worth it.

But yeah, awesome stuff.
I considered it, but it would just be flooded with people bitching that it doesn't work in FireFox so I opted against it.

no drawbacks outside of some preference panes not working (macfuse + ntfs3g for starters). have run it full-time for nearly a year without any complaints. also, Paragon NTFS was released recently with 64-bit kernel support.

I have my optibay running my boot drive, factory 500GB HDD is serving as my media drive. I see that when I right-click on my media drive, the option to "eject" is there. I didn't expect to see that because the eject button does not appear like it does for external drives.

Will ejecting in this manner spin down the HDD?

If so, how would I turn them back on after they disappear?

thanks.
I believe so.

I believe you should be able mount it via either the Terminal or Disk Utility.

does anyone have an idea how to install Windows (preferrably 7) without a disk drive?
I have a few ISOs here from MSDNAA but I can neither burn them, nor can my disk drive read disks at all :/

edit: boot camp, not parallels

I was reading something the other day that it's pointless to boot into 64-bit mode. Something along the lines of even if you are running in 32-bit, a 64-bit program WILL run in 64-bit mode. I think it was some dude from Adobe writing on a blog, trying to find it now...

That was my impression as well. I boot in 32bit mode, but Handbrake 64 runs in 64 bit. As far as I know.

Here it is:

http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2010/03/64-bit-kernels-and-after-effec.html

Here's the one-sentence summary of this post:

You don't need to run the 64-bit kernel on Mac OS X to run 64-bit applications
(like After Effects CS5).

Now that I've written that sentence, I can spend the rest of this post elaborating on it. But, really, you can stop reading now.

The 32-bit Mac OS kernel can run 64-bit applications, and it can manage ~32GB of RAM. With any current computer, there is no disadvantage to running the 32-bit kernel. Running the 32-bit kernel will not change which applications you can run, and it will not change how much address space your 64-bit applications can have.

The design of Mac OS separated the kernel address space from the client (application) address space, which is why Apple can fully support running a 64-bit program on a 32-bit kernel. On Leopard, this is the only option; and it's the default on Snow Leopard.

This article explains the distinction between a 64-bit kernel and 64-bit user processes (applications) pretty well. This article is pretty good, too.

So, to say it again, 64-bit applications will run on Leopard (10.5) and Snow Leopard (10.6) versions of Mac OS X running their 32-bit kernels.

For Windows, you need a 64-bit OS to run 64-bit applications, and you need a 64-bit OS to use more than 4GB of physical RAM in the machine.

I'd point to the system requirements page here, but we haven't updated it for After Effects CS5 yet. So, I'll just tell you that 64-bit Windows 7, 64-bit Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.5 or higher are the operating systems that After Effects CS5 will run on.

Does Final Cut Studio require a product code or anything?

Just bought a MBP. I do some work w/ a freelance video guy who has Final Cut and we are going to install it on my machine as we do projects together. You think there will be any issue with this?

Not sure what are you implying :D That's a 1000 dollar software.

Well, one issue would be a freelance professional circulating pirated copies.

His copy is not pirated. Plus I work for him, so I'm thinking it would be legit to use his license. I actually just bought Adobe Production Premium CS5, I might just stick with that anyway.

And yes, Apple doesn't have activation codes on stuff like iLife and the OS, but I'm thinking they do on something like Final Cut Studio... So I don't think this even matters.

It's not a matter of whether you can justify it to yourself. There's a product license, the guy you work for either abides to it or not. If he doesn't, the license is void, meaning he can't legally use the product.

[...]
2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This includes the right to transfer your copy of the Apple Software licensed hereunder from an Apple G4 hardware platform to an Apple G5 hardware platform.
[...]
4. Termination. This License is effective until terminated. Your rights under this License will terminate automatically without notice from Apple if you fail to comply with any term(s) of this License. Upon the termination of this License, you shall cease all use of the Apple Software and destroy all copies, full or partial, of the Apple Software.
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/finalcutpro.htm

As you can see, there's no "fair use" clause or something like that.

I know it's a bitch, but you asked, so there's your response.

This. Or if it is like Adobe (if I remember correctly) it is legal to be on two machines as long as both are not running the program at the same time. I dont know where I am getting that from.

I believe it cannot be done. I tried external CDs and flash drives. Only way it could work was for me to install it with the dvd drive present. I saw a set of old instructions for use with parallels 4 that could supposedly do it. But I have parallels 5 and couldn't follow all the directions because of software changes between parallels 4 and 5.

I can post that link for you if you have parallels 4.

Thank you. I figured it out earlier and created an Automator workflow that unmounts or remounts my 3 HDD partitions for when I don't need them.

Ftw.

Launch the program again (either from wherever you installed it to, or if you enabled it to sit in your menubar) and from there it should be easy to find that window. I've been having some issue with the snapping in the latest version though.

Open btt preferences. It's probably also in your system preferences. There is also some sort of handicapped mode button in the access preferences that has to be selected.

Can't remember the names. :-(

When I launch the program nothing happens. It doesn't show in dock or anything. Dunno why this is so confusing.

That is checked though... And I can't delete it because it says it's in use. WTF is wrong with this program?

Edit: Nvm, found it. I had to google what menu bar was. :p

Edit 2: Program is kind of lame. Left size keeps resizing to over 50% which makes the whole thing useless....

Edit 3: I guess it's only certain programs that don't like to be resized.

^ check the settings? mine always resizes to 50%, though I see you can manually specify how wide you want each window in the BTT preferences. keep looking.

this might work:

http://lifehacker.com/5531037/how-t...-with-windows-and-linux-no-boot-camp-required

also, this:

http://www.tokyobit.com/2010/01/install-windows-7-in-bootcamp-on-macbook-pro-with-broken-superdrive/

worth a try if you don't want to put your SSD back in the main bay and Superdrive in its mainbay.

in the end, I did just that: I took apart my optibay, put my SSD in the main bay so that I could install Win7, then put my ssd back into the optibay. been working great ever since.

sorry it took me awhile to find those links. hopefully one of those 3 options will get you taken care of.

thank you so, so, so much! I will check them out now.

edit: yeah I tried and failed at both of these already :(
I think I will just accept the shitty game performance under OSX and wait for an iMac refresh to install Windows and join the world of the master race.
Or maybe I'll just buy a Windows PC. I could hook it up to my 1080p 42" Bravia and keep my MBP around for travel.
Ok this idea sounds better by the second.

is your issue that your superdrive doesn't work? or that you're running with 2 HDDs?

Dreams-Visions said:
shit. yea, I'm at the extent of my knowledge. did the Parallels approach not work because you didn't have the necessary version of parallels? or was that guide just bullshit?

also, did you try refit? http://refit.sourceforge.net/

yeah I tried rEFIt, it was necessary, eh.

also, no it was just too complicated. I guess I could acquire old pls.

Can't read, can't burn. Spits disks back into my stomach. Literally.

Mine was broken for a while, and I noticed it when I got home after midnight with Snow Leopard.

My solution: I had a spare external HDD. You can create a disc image on the HDD. It's bootable. It's all done through Disk Utility.

Just glimpsed the thread so sorry if it's not what you're looking for. ._.

we're trying to think our way through installing Win7 via Bootcamp without a Superdrive working.

presently Bootcamp doesn't allow installing Win7 from a flash drive or an external DVD drive. that's the problem.

mescalineeyes, might want to consider borrowing a friend's superdrive from their computer. :)

haha that's gonna be one weird phonecall.

"borrow my what?"
"your disk drive."
"but how can you..?"
"well first I have to open it up..."
"no fucking way."

if you were around here, I would have taken it out and handed to you. but you're probably right.

hah, thanks, that's really kind of you, but the only friend I have who owns a compatible superdrive literally JUST got his new i7, I doubt he's too eager to open it up.

that being said, I am willing to try a few tricks, but there's a limit to my desperation to get windows on here.

my main reason is, well, StarCraft 2, but the performance has been improving with each build and next week's OS X update should also improve the performance a bit so... maybe it'll all turn out just fine.

Can anyone recommend me a good program which will let me create journals/notes? I'd like to be able to drag images, mp3s, video which will embed on to the page.

I'm currently trying out MacJournal but I was wondering if there is a better alternative.

More and more I love my mac everyday!

Ctrl + Cmd + D + *hover over any word in Safari* brings up the dictionary <3. I'm such a newb!

Is there a short cut for the Dictionary.app to pop up?

1) you can click on "more" in the little pop-up

2) you can enter any word into spotlight and it will tell you the definition like so:

Thanks!

I am trying to go as native as possible because I have been struggling with my baby for about 2 weeks with it slowing down, so I have removed a TONNES of add-ons/system hacks like QUicksilver, BetterTouchTool and what not and everything is going GREAT! But the only thing at the moment is the stupid mail.app. I use Google notifier which just goes in the top of my menu bar and displays the last few emails, it's light quick and easy. But I wanted to use my MobileMe account too, so that either means using Mail.app or the online version.

But here is my problem with the Mail.app

It's eating a huge chunk of memory. I know memory is there to be used but when I am transcoding gigs of data, checking a lil porn and what not, everything just beachballs :(

I don't think anyone can help, just venting
