MacAge: Continuation of Outlook Express (Classic) on OSX questions

I asked about this yesterday, here's the update...

I tried fixing disk permissions... nothing. We don't have OS9 itself installed, only Classic, so I can't boot directly to 9.

Trying to import the mailboxes from Outlook Express to Mail doesn't work, because in doing so it needs to launch Classic.

Classic will load extensions, and then just freeze... if I try to run Classic with extensions off, it loads successfully, but then Outlook Express can't run because it needs those extensions.

Re-installing Classic off thhe OSX additional software CD won't work, and Apple Care doesn't want to help, because it's not their app that isn't working. Microsoft can't help either, because the application is discontinued.

So... yeah, how do I migrate the data to Mail if Mail needs to launch OE to import the data, but Classic won't load properly with extensions on?

Be hard for you to get many answers :) I didn't even consider a Mac more than a doorstop until OSX and when I purchased my first Mac (Powerbook), the first thing I did was format clean without OS9 or Classic or any of that foolishness.

Divx 5.2 installed on a machine with Tiger disables Classic from launching. Delete the codec from the Library/Quicktime folder, restart and you should be all set.

My suggestion is to boot using extensions manager, then try to pinpoint the offending system extension. Then you can disable it. It is likely the one that last appears before classic locks up.

Extensions manager can be accessed suing the advanced tab in the classic control panel.

Shantyman may be right. Load Classic with no extensions, then try launching OE and find out which extensions it needs. Then use Extension Manager in OS9 (in OS9's control panel folder) to activate only those extensions OE needs. Relaunch Classic and try.

If that works, export your data from OE and then for the love of god, remove classic and never run that crap again. I've always hated OS9. What a terrible OS.

I had to archive and install from 10.3.9 back to 10.3.7. Outlook then worked, I exported the data to Mail, but the contacts from OE had to be manually inputted again one by one to the OSX Address Book program.

Then I had to update back to 10.3.9, not only because it makes sense to, but because going down to 10.3.7 broke Safari.

WOO. GO MAC GO!!!!

Seriously though, this is exactly why I don't think Windows should be bashed the way it is.

I'll admit that Windows does run better than in the past.

But it would be more analogous to complain about why a DOS game from 1997 won't run in XP. The whole problem was OS9 related, not OSX or Macs in general.

Except I can get all my old DOS games, even stuff like Duke Nukem 3D and Blood, to run in XP both WITH sound, and... this shocked me, as I randomly stumbled upon it... VESA mode!

Yes!!!

Now if only multiplayer could be reworked for netplay.

You bash the Mac because Microsoft makes shit software for the Mac? Sorry, not seeing the logic in that.

Classic not loading properly is Microsoft's fault?

I later tried downloading random OS9 apps to see if anything could get Classic to work properly, but no.
