Pretty much same feelings as Sominid here.

iCloud is a competely useless feature for me when all you get is 5GB. I honestly don't understand how the richest company on the planet can be this cheap when startup companies give away 10x as much storage for free. Even with 3 Apple devices, I'd still rather use (and pay for) services like Google Photos and Dropbox.

Siri: Uhh... cool, I guess. Don't know why I would ever bother talking to my computer, waiting for a response, and then hoping that it processed everything correctly when I can just type it in in a fraction of the time.

PiP: I had no idea this was even something people wanted on a desktop OS.

End of the day, pretty much feels as if I'm still using El Capitan.

They didn't get to be the richest company on the planet by giving things away for free (or, arguably, even at reasonable prices).

Nope. From the Ars review:

Probably the real reason is that in an office environment coworkers would be triggering Siri on each other's Macs all day long.

Apple Pay in Safari. Seriously? We have standard Web Payments rolling out into other browsers and Apple invents some stupid proprietary web API for Apple Pay (I thought we were done with proprietary browser bullshit?). This is incredibly offensive as a developer. Fuck Safari.

What. Apple Pay on Safari is a godsend. I've had my CC number stolen twice this year. I'm all aboard the Apple Pay train wherever I can get it. I'm through with giving businesses and web sites my CC number just so some hacker can steal and sell it. The fact that Apple Pay is also extremely convenient to use is just a cherry on top.

Comparing to startups? Those companies are burning through their VC money by giving away everything for free so that they can get bought by companies like Apple and Google that actually make money. Try comparing iCloud prices to something actually equivalent like MS OneDrive.

I upgraded from El Capitan to the Sierra Golden Master last week, I ended up having a really strange issue with iCloud Keychain. In order to access it after a clean install you need to enter a passcode.
The thing is the prompt was asking me for a 4 digit passcode - but I had it set to use the more complex 6 digit passcode, which I was obviously unable to enter, thus I couldn't access my keychain. I only figured this out because I restarted my computer and for some reason I was automatically logged into the keychain.
I'm just posting this in this thread in case someone else runs into the same problem. I almost lost a ton of passwords because of this!

Just had a hard lock up. The whole computer froze and I had to hold the power button down to turn it off.

Not a very good first day with it.

Do you still have both on your computer? I was under the impression this was impossible; i thought Photos automaticallly replaced iPhoto.

Photos is the newer one, and the only one that's going to get updates going forward, so if you're undecided use that one. Some people prefer iPhoto though.
Does iPhoto work on sierra?

I upgraded to last week with the GM but I'm having an odd issue with the trackpad on my Macbook Pro 2015.

When trying to copy and move files around it will not drag them.

I thought I was doing it wrong but it worked when I used a connected bluetooth mouse.

The problem is that it works and sometimes it won't work so I can't say what's the cause of it.

I checked System Preferences to be sure that it some setting was turned off but everything is on there.

I never had this issue before in El Capitan.

Hmm... I am usually all over OS updates on day one, but as someone who does not and will not use an iPhone, there is basically nothing in the OP that makes me feel compelled to update. Siri sucks and I am never going to use it. I don't use any of Apple's default programs (Safari, Mail, Photos, etc.). Going to check out that Ars review and see if there are any performance boosts, but those highlighted features have me awash in a tidal wave of indifference.

EDIT: After going through the fulls Ars review (admittedly skipping over the super techy stuff like networking and file system changes), I see nothing to be excited about. Oh well!

Same here, think I'll stick with what I've got at the moment. Besides, updating usually breaks some of my audio/device drivers and it is a pain to get them all working again.

Any improvement in startup times? My iMac is full spec and takes a few minutes before I can even type into the login box. Not normal for a computer that cost so much.

So I'm trying to download the update but it apparently failed. Now it's just stuck on Downloading on the Launchpad thing, without actually downloading anything and I can't get rid of that. I open up that App store and press Download again, but nothing is happening. Any help?

You might have to go into launchpad, click and hold down on the icon, then delete it there using the X. I had similar problems when upgrading to El Capitan.

Gonna wait and see how some of the software I use work in Sierra before updating. Last time I updated to fast none of my Native Instruments plugins worked for a couple of weeks. Hopefully things get patched quicker this time

It's about baby steps. Eventually you'll be doing more by voice command.

But for now you can get it to add calendar events (always a bit finicky to find your calendar, and fill in the form for date, time etc), set up reminders, eh... I don't know what else on mac, but it's super useful on phone just to look up stuff or if you have quick questions.

I imagine being able to do that on desktop means you don't have to take away focus from what you're doing. But yeah personally if I have my phone nearby I can not take away focus anyway.

Not necessarily. I use Fantastical. I can open the calendar with a global shortcut and start typing the event including the date, time and location in natural language. Takes just a few seconds.

They really should just buy Fantastical. I don't mind the Calendar app so much on iOS, but the Mac calendar app feels like it's stuck in the late 2000's. In fact I'd say most of the stock Mac apps feel that way, aside from maybe Photos and Safari.

To be fair though, even Fantastical presents calendar info in traditional ways, and it's really the input mechanisms which are great. No one has really done a huge rethink on how to present busy schedules. This is something that Apple, if they see Siri as becoming a true digital assistant, is going to have to tackle.

Do you have an SSD or fusion drive? Old school hardrives are always a little slow to boot up. What part is slow? As in what do you see? Is it really spinning icon? Or is there a blank screen for ages?

Im just going to paste what I posted in another thread:

mrkgoo said:
Just a note for slow startups - got to System preferences->Startup disk. It SHOULD have listed under the window of all options: "You have selected OS X, 10.x.x on the dis "YOUR HD". If it doesn't, then select your main start up disk and restart.

Sometimes slow boot times are attributed to a startup disk not being selected. It will then hunt things like network and other mounted disks and find the "closest" one to boot to. This is usually still fast, but sometimes depending on your setup, it can cause delays.

IF you want to be super thorough, reset PRAM before doing the above (resting PRAM will actually reset the startup disk to be unselected, so the above tip is for anyone who has actually reset PRAM as well).

Yeah fantastical is great, I've heard. I thought natural language typing was coming to spotlight in sierra?

But yeah Siri is useful for that too. Especially if you don't have fantastical.

Not 100% on topic, but are you using the original or Fantastical 2? I've been using Fantastical 1 for many years and I'm wondering if/how the new one is worth the $40 they want for it.

Another question is if the old one was worth the amount of money you paid. If it's an indispensable app, sometimes it's cool to just keep going with them. No doubt they probably won't be updating the older version as they move forward.

The old one was definately worth my money because it only cost a few dollars iirc and I've been using it for a VERY long time. They haven't updated it in years and years but it still works fine.

It's so stupid that the iPhone can't be used to unlock. Fuck.

I am disappointed that I cannot unlock my iMac with my iPhone. Missed opportunity here.

This seems very impractical.
In the time it would take to take your phone from your pocket / pick up from desk and then activate Touch ID you could've simply typed your password.
Then you'd have to lock your phone again and put it down / away.
It works with the Watch only as the heart rate monitor constantly senses that it's you wearing the Watch. Using your phone to unlock your Mac using any other method than unlocking your phone too isn't secure.

I'm actually loving Siri on iMac. Laying in bed telling it what songs to play, and eventually told it to go to sleep. Pretty handy.

The update did nothing for me. I've tried Siri but the fact that you have to physically open it first makes it a pain. It also seems to pick up stray voices, like my tv, more then my phone does. While not important I think the voice is also horrible versus what Google uses.

I've been using Microsoft's One Drive on my rMBP, desktop PC, and mobile for a while now and don't have a reason to switch to iCloud. They both work the same on the Mac.

Sounds like you have a spinning disk hard drive and it's getting slow. It'll only continue getting worse, and no OS upgrade will save you. Upgrade to an SSD and you'll be using that computer another 5+ years with acceptable speeds.

Heads up to anyone with a Razer mouse, the already awful Synapse program will stop functioning correctly once you upgrade. My forward and back buttons stopped working and it kept randomly switching profiles on me when clicking between windows. Had to completely uninstall the software.

Fantastical 2. But I haven't used the first version, so I can't really tell you whether you should upgrade or not.

to be fair, the built in calendar app has improved.

if you do cmd+space (spotlight) "cal" -> enter -> cmd+N you're in "create quick event" mode, which allows you to input stuff like "tomorrow 9pm dinner" or "lunch on sunday at 1 pm"
it's not as smart as fantastical is about "with *PERSON* or at *LOCATION* " but it's a start.

If you downloaded and installed the GM from fews back that was not that final release. Only the 2nd GM was final release so people having issues go to App Store find it and DL again.

Honestly biggest disappointment issue is with Safari that drops frames in 60fps videos (even on my rMBP). El Capitan and pre version of Safari don't have this issue.

Done on a clean install. People are free to test for themselves and report back:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qK7SNAd1ds

Play video at 1080p 60fps right mouse click on video select show stats for nerds in bottom check the stats of Dropped Frames. First number amount of dropped frames second amount of frames played.

When I get home tonight might try out Safari tech-preview see if it fixes it but I doubt it will unless Apple already knew of the issue with this Safari ver. I sent them a report anyway.

The storage space optimization has been amazing. I don't need to buy a larger HDD now.

That video doesn't play in Safari for me

edit: derp, old plugin causing issues. Drops frames for me on a late 2013 15" rMBP

Yes that video is dropping frames on my rMBP too. Connection speed is solid so it's not that.

I just don't see the need for yearly macOS updates, particularly since it tends to break a lot of music software compatibility. Then also that niggling feeling that these updates slow down your mac (like iOS updates).

In the old days I would've agreed with you, but...have you heard about Our Lord and Savior iOS 10?

Regarding Mac releases, I've always tried to wait until x.2 or 3 point release before upgrading. But yeah with music software it gets trickier when you've got a lot of small companies and hardware drivers.

It's not about Apple Pay being shit or not. It's about the fact there is a damn near complete web standard on handling secure pay that Edge, Firefox, Chrome will be using. Then Apple says "yea fuck that standard" and made their own for Safari.

Which means for us developers instead of having to code to one standard that works across all browsers, we have to code to two because Apple. And to make it worse, I'm pretty sure Apple's implementation isn't open license so it can't be rolled into the standard.

Thanks for the report back guys to confirm. You can go find other 60fps videos even at 720p and you'll see it is dropping frames now which is not normal at all for our hardware so pretty annoying bug with Safari.

As someone who does development work and who has released OSS, I can sympathize with that position.

As an end-user that likes the Apple ecosystem, I want Apple Pay to be ubiquitous.

If those two things can co-exist, fantastic, but I won't personally be losing sleep over it. I'll check out the open standard though; is it as secure and frictionless as Apple Pay?

There will probably be some wrappers for it. Probably.

Odd, Safari does drop a lot of frames, 267/3000 (where I stopped the video). Firefox, for example, had 0/3000 in the stats for nerds.

I noticed it right away when I was watching videos on clean GM 1 install. I was like wtf is this shit checked Stats for Nerds and yup just as I expected.

Went back to El Capitan and no issues...yesterday did clean install of Final release after doing complete dban secure wipe of my rMBP internal SSD and checked again and still same issue.

Won't be home for a few hours people can check if they fixed this in Tech Preview but I doubt it.
