"In care of" made me pretty hopeful for Don's future, maybe he'll reverse the course of the anti hero genre and become a better person?

Knowing what my parents and their siblings had to go through as what they've always portrayed to me as standard parenting operating procedure of the 1960s, Don is ahead of the pack just by virtue of refusing to hit his kids. And to your second point, who is?

Wasn't he ready to abandon his kids in the first season after Pete discovered his identity? Don isn't as bad as Walter White, but he's a pretty bad person.

Yeah he was, Rachel Menken is the one who asks about his children, because he comes to her wanting to run away, and his response is that he'll send them money.

So... at least he was willing to send them money, but that doesn't change the fact he was basically ready to abandon his kids.

To be fair him running away or considering that wasn't done out of maliciousness but rather because he was scared, but on the other hand he was being selfish and only looking out for himself, so I can understand why people find Don deplorable.

Although I guess maybe Don is getting better based on what happened at the end of S6?

Well he is a fairly different person from season 1. At the very least he is now open with those close to him about his past. That's actually a pretty huge thing. He still needs to improve a lot as a parent (an understatement) but I do not think he would even consider abandoning his children anymore.

It's also unfair to keep judging Don on events from a decade ago, anyway. No one who has tried to change should have to be held against actions from that long ago.

Don has grown, but he is still doing awful things. Not surprising in the least. Absolutely no one drops their shitty traits without backsliding. But he is trying to change, he has tried a lot to better, and deserves credit. It doesn't even matter how many times he was caught doing awful shit. Don on shown plenty of regret. Some one beyond redemption doesn't show genuine regret.

Don is not rotten to the core. He is not beyond redemption. At least not yet. We'll only know if he is a total shitbag come the finale. And he could be, I won't put that past Weiner.

Don does rotten things, but he's not a rotten person at his core. Calling him "abhorrent" or "trash" is very black/white thinking.

Agreed. I never found Don to be evil like Vic Mackey from The Shield or Walt from Breaking Bad. Don's just an ass.

Don will change and become a better person. At least that is what I got from the finale. I am sure he will still struggle with things like we all do, but I think by the end of season 7 he will have made some real strides toward becoming a better person.

Weiner had mentioned that the big question and theme of this season was "can people change?" and I think ultimately the answer is going to be yes.

The cast and presumably Weiner will be at PaleyFest tomorrow night. Streaming link is here.

bitch I'm taking calls.
His character has a weird vibe, but I like him.
Just re-watched the druggy episode and this bit of dialogue stood out.

Ted: "What happened Jim?! How could you let Frank's daughter come here?"

Jim: "She wanted to tag along so I let her. Don't worry, I kept an eye on her."

And this after he creeps on her and Stan screwing in an office.

Don actually wants to be a good person. It basically comes to him in a pipe dream, but there's a distant moral core that makes him sympathetic and pretty depressing. He's making steps in the right direction (again) should just be like a celibate teetotaler or something idk.
