Tim Goodman: Five Things to Worry About With 'Mad Men' - Let the deeper analysis and bigger worries come later, but right now these things are of some real concern

4. The Megan Issue. Perhaps Sunday's episode is the real beginning of the end for Megan. And if it is, series creator Matt Weiner may be forced to look back at this as both a story error and casting error. Marrying Megan further crushed the Betty storyline, which for many people was not a bad thing but there was still plenty of inner demons/motives that Weiner and his writers initially seemed interested in exploring, then gave up on, mostly. More Megan also meant less Peggy last year, and that left people upset. Jessica Pare never seemed to click with the viewing audience as Megan and for someone so dominant in the storyline last season went pretty much unrewarded critically.

Well I'm definitely with him here. :p

Liked that episode. That awkward silence when SCDP met Peggy and Co, Don listening in to her pitch seemingly with some pride, the attempted orgy, Stan flipping Peggy the bird.

Did everyone forget about Joy?

I sure didn't. My favorite of all Don's conquests.

Megan is the only part of Don's storyline that is bearable to me. And where is this "stealing" screen time bit coming from? Are the female characters so interchangeable in that there is some finite time limit on how much attention they get? If anything is a waste, it's watching Don make the same mistakes for the umpteenth time.

And this is the exact same kind of backlash that they were heaping on Betty before too. It's getting a bit old.

For all his philandering Don doesn't strike me as an orgy type of guy. Which is fairly amusing.

Indeed. It's a share of sexual power and spouse that I don't believe Don would ever get behind.

I don't think this was a smirk from Peggy rather the realisation that she's lost a friend and was forcing her smile

I don't know. It came off to me as a "Welp!" smirk to me. She did lose a friend, but also gained an account. We all know Peggy loves putting her skills to use and getting rewarded.

I'm rewatching and I swear to God that maid outfit was specifically designed to make Jessica Pare look awful.

She has never looked worse than she does in that outfit.

? Neither of them got the account. J Walter Thompson got it.

"Project K."

It's kinda dumb that nobody figured out what it meant, since they were all well aware of the earlier meeting with Heinz ketchup.

Also, what kind of sick fuck puts ketchup on hot dog. (STAN!)

That part of ketchup on a hot dog is a joke right?

Anyway, I agree with that Megan assertion. I've always thought she was too Mary Sueish. Then we see a glimpse of flaws but so far this season it's been nothing. The season is young of course. Jessica Pare isn't a great actress either, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Peggy didn't get the account.

Whoops, that came out completely wrong. She got a pitch out for Heinz which gained the trust of her superior and maintained her job. Peggy is ambitious and I believe she was A-Ok with the risk. She didn't get actively rewarded, but it was an assertive move for her firm.

Are you sure that's the case and it isn't the writing? Everyone thought Anna Torv sucked as Olivia Dunham but we later found out that wasn't the case at all.

Megan is pretty much a naive and slightly immature woman.

Ketchup on a hot dog is a federal offense, last time I checked. Hot dogs fall under mustard's jurisdiction.

She can't carry any scene she's in. Maybe it's just part of her character that you can't tell when she's serious and when she's "acting" or whatever, but every single argument scene she had with Don last season was cringe-worthy.

You know who was a really underrated actress on this show? Peyton List (played Jane Sterling). Her post-LSD breakup with Roger was one of the most beautiful scenes on the show.

Mustard is a must.

But together is better.

Holy shit, YES!

It's amazing that I think back to how little I thought of her in season 2 when her work across 4 & 5 is so wonderful.

3. If Peggy becomes Don and Pete becomes Don and we now don't like Don, where does that leave us? Rooting for Stan? For Don's secretary, Dawn? Wait, where are the likable people again? True, you don't need likable people to make a show, and maybe those whose flaws we can now overlook (Roger, Bert, Joan) can be the folks we root for. But they were never meant to be the keys.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean? People who watch Mad Men for likeable characters should probably switch to Breaking Bad.

Yeah, what a weird criticism. It's not like Peggy, for instance, transformed overnight into a cutthroat power player. Her evolution was believable and made total sense in the context of her relationship with Don.

It'd be way worse if, despite all her experiences since S1, she was still that same fragile, doe-eyed ingenue.

I fucking hate the likeability complaint too (hello, Enlightened/Amy Jellicoe stan) and I'm no fan of Tim Goodman, but I guess because he's always responded well to challenging, fucked up characters I'm not sensing it in the same way you're all reacting to it.

You should check out the GAF thread for Season 5.

oh, I have.

Omg yes, Jane is/was awesome.

...Walter White is likeable?

That was a joke about how intensely flawed every character on Mad Men is. I think the characters you like most on the show are an interesting litmus test to figure out what severe personal problems you're most used to dealing with. (Peggy, Joan and Roger for me.)

I find the opening shot of this episode intriguing.

Pete, fixing a drink in his fuckpad, saying, "So you haven't officially told anyone you're looking to change your life?" with all of the other characters out of frame.

Clearly meant to imply seduction in that typical creepy Pete fashion.

1. Agreed. The entire episode she looked "horrible" compared to previous episodes.

2. Ketchup on my hot dogs every damn time.

Also, I wouldn't mind losing Don and focusing on Peggy instead. Especially if she doesn't go back to SCDP.

My girlfriend and I had a long conversation about the "likeability" thing because she's not interesting in watching TV shows where she despises everyone.

Her thing is: "I'm watching TV to waste time anyways, if I wanted novel-quality characters, I'd read a book. When I watch a TV drama or comedy, I want to watch people I can root for like Leslie Knope. A documentary series or a show like The Wire is different because to me because they're representative of reality (she lived in West Baltimore for a year working at a Hospital)."

Also, she's in med school, so free time is a precious commodity. I don't hold it against her even though Mad Men is my favorite show on TV.

Fucking disgusting.

I'm glad you said this. I was cleaning the living room while watching this part and I missed that. I took it that Peggys firm won the account, but I couldn't understand the somber mood from them all as they sat there at the diner.
