Mad Men - Season 6 - Sundays on AMC

I've been trying to board the Mad Men train for the past 4 years, always failing miserably at the 6th episode of Season 1. I love the production design, love (some of) it's characters, appreciate the writing, yet... I can't get into it. It's enormously frustrating.

Anyone here that's now a fan went through the same situation? I guess it's a stupid question, but I really want to get into this show.

It fully clicked for me in season 3, so...

I was listening to Comedy Bang Bang this morning and damn, Jon Hamm has it all. Why did he have to be genuinely funny on top of everything else? :(

i know. his inner-self stared at god and just took the deck of cards and dealt himself a perfect hand. Then jump down into the uterus.

You know why he's so cool? I mean really cool, not public relations cool? He worked for it. He's a grown ass man. A working actor. He's not some eighteen year old. "Hey kid, you look good. Here's a show." Therefore he has his shit together.

Eh, I appreciate the fact that Weiner tries to keep things under wraps. Critics need to stop complaining about this every year.
keep WHAT under wraps though. I agree with what Sepinwall said (I think it was him who said this), Weiner is making it seem like these people are going to rabidly write up spoilers without his control, and not only that, but being so controlling he's almost implying that this show is the type of show that it's simply not. This isn't walking dead lol, there isn't a whole lot to spoil here. It gives the impression that this is the kind of show with twists and surprises and suspense and crazy things happening, but it's really not 99% of the time.

Also I'd almost maybe MAYBE maybe CONSIDER defending Weiner if we didn't already know for a fact that the guy is pretty whiny and controlling in general. He has a history. I love him for his work but he needs to cool it.

I trust Weiner more than the critics. Controlling or not, most critics will spoil incidental details that Mad Men relies on *more* than Walking Dead.

Eh, it's not that big of a deal IMO. Critics can just post their reviews after the show premieres if they want to discuss specifics so badly. It's been this way for quite some time, no? You'd think that the critics would have gotten used to it by now.

I don't think that's entirely true, that piece describing the restrictions overplayed it.
and I said, she wasn't the only person saying this stuff though. So there's something here. And once again, Weiner has a history.

Again I don't actually care, but if I was a critic I'd probably be pissed because you want to write up a lot of great things about the show but you can't even do that. It's just a weird thing. There's a lot of shitty things people have to get used to, doesn't make things less shitty.

The secrecy is just a bit of Hitchcock like showmanship from Weiner, I think. Out of the Psycho playbook.

You actually nailed the main problem I have with this show. Rich on characterization, but very weak on actual plot. There are entire episodes that fly by with nothing significant that has happened.

And yet it's still more compelling than pretty much anything else on TV.

The show is a series of character studies, and every episode reveals something new and interesting about a character (or multiple characters), so I take issue with the claim that there are eps where "nothing significant has happened." Every nuance of this show is significant.

Megan Draper is the worst and that's mostly due to Pare's terrible teeth acting.

It's time for my Betty to SLAY her ass.

Guys I have a dilemma. I'm just about to finish season 3. I will probably just have started 4 when this season premieres. Mad Men isn't so much about spoilers as it is about how things got there anyways, right? It would be okay if I watched this premiere....right?

I wouldn't do it. Skip this week's premiere and use the entire week to catch up on your backlog. Then watch 3 hours worth the following Sunday.
