Mafia: The Old Country Releases on August 8 (linear, narrative-driven game priced at $49.99/€49.99/£44.99)

Hype

The remake for the first game was great, and the second game is a classic. Haven't played third game, but sounded like it was extremely repetitive.

Hope they knit this up nice, and go back to formula for first and second game.

You should at the very least watch the cutscenes of 3.

Maybe play the first couple hours. The whole intro is fucking fantastic.

But the game awards is industry professionals picking and they'll pick the stuff I mentioned before something like blue prince for GOTY even though it out rates most of those games.

Gotta make a bigger impact and be highly rated.
Yeah but the point I'm making is it's only June and you've picked out 4 games that you claim are dead certs for nomination, and that's not exactly clever IMO given a few are either 90 or below.

It definitely is. Man, if only they had kept it simple and left out the racket stuff. That really brought the overall experience down. But it's that fantastic intro and DLCs that gives me faith in ToC.

So I'm probably right, left 2 spots open for upcoming games. And that's dumb. Haha

Hangar13 ended adding some pretty rad updates to M3 overall. Not just fixing the majority of the jankiness, the thing ended up with a focus/slo mo shooting AND driving (a la Franklin/GTAV) mechanic both that were never there during that first year or two it was out.

The actual assassination missions were also pretty fucking cool. Everything in between dragged it down, yup.

Yeah you mean the ones that were basically the actual story missions right? Like the hotel one and several others? That shit was great.

Where "White Rabbit" plays by Jefferson Airplane? That was sick

On second thought my memories are hazy and I might just be making sh*t up 😄

Oh boy, I honestly don't know the songs that played during those missions but I do know it was awesome. Fantastic music all around in that game. And Lincoln is a bad ass protagonist.

I will definitely play through it. Time period in the game hasn't really been done much, so I'm sure at the very least that should set it apart.

The soundtrack is also pretty one of a kind and I don't even mean the licensed stuff (which is incredible itself).

And absolutely correct about the time period. It should be noted that they do put a warning on the main screen beforehand, but this was in 2015 so at the time it came across written pretty respectful for the player. It doesn't come across as snooty and up its own ass on teaching you a lesson.

Even though I've been meaning to play this game forever, you gave me the nudge to finally start the game, and I'm enjoying it so far (just got done with the reserve heist).

Gameplay is tight. Which is a blessing as third person shooters are such a mixed bag, and usually devs fuck it up by making it floaty.

However, the cover system, shooting, movement, and animations are on point in this game.

Keep us posted with more thoughts as you progress!

I think I'm going to call it here (i.e. only after a couple hours).

I think I've played through 2 rackets and apparently there are 18 total.

It looks like there are 23 missions across the main campaign for the game, so does that mean there's only 5 missions that are non-racket missions?

I was going to call it after a few hours too. But it actually does get better. Look at what upgrades you get for each ally and just do the ones needed to get the upgrades you want. Also I started the priest dlc missions not knowing it was dlc at first, and it's pretty awesome. You go after a cult.

I plan to beat it but I'm not going to do all the side stuff.

Mission design. Its linear story driven like the old games before 3. Really looks like mafia 2, but in a different setting

Oh that sounds absolutely fine to me. Shooting, physics all look good too? And blood? I didn't see much of it in the first IGN video, but it would really annoy me if they toned that down.

This is, like Mafia 1 and 2, a story-first, not-open-world action-adventure. And interestingly, your primary, upgradeable weapon isn't a gun – though they are certainly here – but rather, your knife.

That's pretty fucking dope.

IGN latest footage is good. I'm getting more excited for this. But again, I'm one of the people that actually enjoyed 3 🤷🏻‍♂️
Mafia 3 is one of the most underrated games ever. Sure, you can hate it for the open world content, but everything else was top-notch, and that soundtrack is chefskiss.gif. I just played the dlcs for the first time to prepare for the Old Country and I had a blast with the game (again).

Finished the campaign, and per steam it took me 25 hours (despite installing the "no racket damage mod").

Unfortunately, the game did fall into the Ubisoft open-world gameplay loop and it really hurt it. That being said, almost all games do, but don't get as much hate as this game does.

I'd give it a solid 7/10.

If the new game goes back to the original formula, I'm sure mlre people will enjoy it than they did Mafia 3.

I killed the main guy last night. So I'll be finishing the campaign tonight. Yea it's still too grindy even after modding out most of the grind. Almost all the interesting stuff was the dlc expansions too. The main campaign didn't have enough variety, it was basically just changing buildings and and the type of people there. But that's it.
