Mafia: The Old Country Releases on August 8 (linear, narrative-driven game priced at $49.99/€49.99/£44.99)

Expedition 33 says hi?

It can't be worse than Mindseye.
Well one could argue a small developer releasing it's first game is a much bigger risk than the latest entry in a successful franchise. Maybe Mindseye would have benefitted from a lower price point?

Having said all that I'm hoping this is decent as I'll definitely bite at that price.

This game does everything right. No open world, story driven and at a bargain?

The cheap pricing doesn't exude confidence in your game does it?

It remains slightly a worry of mine, because I really want this game to be great, but apparently Mafia DE was low priced at release too. I do recall rumors about this game that it would be a somewhat lower budget game though.

If that means more like 1 and 2 I am all for it. They went downhill with 3 in several aspects. Several things were great, but the gameplay loop isn't one of them.

If it is a lower budget effort then it's understandable but all the motion capture that went into this would suggest otherwise right? Or is that relatively cheap these days?

It's probably going to be like a 12 to 15 hour game (that's what Mafia I and II were, and this seems to be following their lead). You can't price a 12 hour linear game at $70 or $80. People would say F no, and you'd have to deal with all sorts of push-back from your core audience. That would damage the reputation of the game and undercut any early momentum you might hope to get. $50 is a better entry point.

I honestly have no idea about that. It does look great, the characters too, very impressive.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I just find it a little bit odd how little they've shown the game in terms of gameplay, and this is coming in August. But maybe a longer deep dive is around the corner.

Mafia de was sold at 40 and sold much better in the long term and was positively reviewed than 3 so they're just going off that

I think it will be a game worthy of the franchise's name, with cinematic qualities that many games are missing nowadays. I'm sure I will love it, but there will be some people who will shit on it because it's not a filler filled 100 hour open world game. And that will be one of the reasons why it will be among the best I think.

So excited to play the game with 1 million triangles per building, I'm sure that this will improve gameplay immeasurably

It improves immersion, a lot. Some of these shots in the videos look so realistic I had to double-check if real or from the game. If it will look like this then this will be one of the very few "nextgen" looking games.

Some new ingame and gameplay scenes in here.

This game looks incredible in every way and seems to live up to its predecessors. Seems like a love project for the devs. But I feel it doesn't get enough praise as the "modern audience" rather plays fortnite or some similar dime a dozen gaas shit and can't value quality work. I hope I'm wrong and the game will have its deserved success.

My game sharing buddy has pre-ordered it already so I have to make sure not to get on his bad side until August.

It does indeed look really good. Very much like how that city looks and the whole vibe of things. I hope Hangar 13 knocks it out of the park. They had good stuff going in Mafia 3 but got ruined by insanely repetitive gameplay loop. However, the three DLC proved they can do it.

So is it going to be an 80 metacritic game or could it go higher and become a GOTY contender

Mafia DE was a 78 metacritic, so I wouldn't expect this to go much above 80. Certainly not GOTY territory. It won't have the high production values and crowd-pleaser appeal required of a GOTY candidate. Plus, its design philosophy is a throwback, and the way its male characters act will probably annoy some game journalists.

It's a game for people who like these kind of games. I'm not expecting it to be anything more.

I expect low to mid 80s and it being one of my favorite games this year. But GOTY noms have 6 slots and we already know 4 of them. Expedition 33, kingdom come deliverance 2, death stranding 2 and split fiction. Maybe Yotei gets a nom.

Way too early to be predicting GOTY nominations. Only Expedition 33 is rated at a very high standard out of the games you mentioned.

I'm sure it will be good, for me at least. I liked even Mafia 3 a lot, despite some repitiveness and Mafia 1 remake was awesome. I'm yet to play the dlcs for 3 but I will try to do that before the Old Country.

Their decision to remake Mafia 1 has let them reconnect with what was so great about the first 2 games. Going for a linear prequel is a smart thing to do and it looks visually stunning so far.

I would like the next game to be more ambitious. Think it's been asked for a million times already but we need an open world Mafia game set in Vegas in the 70s/80s.

Also wouldn't mind a remake of 2.

Agree on all points!

I'm very sceptical it will be good let alone GOTY material.

Thing with this studio is, they nailed several things in Mafia 3. The characters were great and interesting, same with the story. The cutscenes were fantastic with very impressive facial expressions. I thought the driving felt great too, same as the shooting mechanics.

The game world itself too with NPCs behaving in a believable way. Atmosphere as well. It's the mind numbing repetitive shit with the rackets that is mandatory to progress through the story and get to the actual worthwhile story missions. With the three DLCs they really showed what happens when you keep it just story mission after story mission and no repetitive nonsense, it's great.

ToC has lots of potential.

I doubt this is any longer than Mafia 1 Definitive Edition, which was about 11 - 13 hours long story. Hence the lower price.

Hype

The remake for the first game was great, and the second game is a classic. Haven't played third game, but sounded like it was extremely repetitive.

Hope they knit this up nice, and go back to formula for first and second game.
