Is the Alara block in this game? It's built around 3 color decks and has the mana fixing to back it up. If it's not, I'd agree with you. (Unless he wants to try and brave a 5c deck.)

yeah it is, there is a jund deck with blightnings and such. oh and a naya deck and a blue/black artifact deck you cant use :(

multi colour decks are in fashion atm thanks to the latest block allowing some really crazy stuff to revolve around multi colour topping out at the now famous progenitus :D

how hard is the campaign? I had trouble but beat the first two in the demo using the green deck. I really want to purchase it but have a feeling that I'm going to get my ass kicked.

As a very casual MtG fan that hadn't touched the game in years I'd say it's just about right. There were some matches that I had to play a few times. Sometimes you just get a bad draw or make a mistake or misunderstand a card, ya know? I think the most I had to replay a mission was maybe 3 times. There are only 16 total and you can choose a lesser difficulty than the default (medium) one. You only need to beat the campaign to unlock the decks. You win cards by winning with the deck whether offline or online, player or ranked matches.

it actually starts to get easier after the first couple since you start unlocking sweet cards (a 2/2 creature for every land you have? Fuck yes!). I'm more or less a Magic novice but I've been going through the campaign with the green deck without too much trouble. That is until I played Tezzeret just now and lost out of nowhere (artifacts buffing 0/1 creature to 4/5 ftl :( ) but he's the 3rd to last match so I didn't expect it to be easy.

Also there are 3 difficulty settings you can raise or lower at any point during the campaign if you start struggling. I recommend this game!

O rly? And here I was thinking I'd have to go through the campaign 8 full times.

Yep! :) You don't get the same notification you get in single player, but if you check your card count on the deck before and then win online and check it after you will see you got a new card. I was very happy to see that.

Seriously, the Green-Black deck is insane. Only the Mono Black comes anywhere close to it and even then it will still have difficulties. The synergies are truly massive and they give you a shitload of opportunities to turn/win the game in one turn.

I'm not sure about the other decks but for the Black-Green deck, the unlocks added immensely to the power of the deck.

Definitely. The more I play Nissa's Elf deck, the more I think it's the best overall deck. I beat the last Tezzeret in the campaign in one try using that deck. He even brought a Platinum Angel on me, cheating bastard.

Stupid question, but are they going to do DLC cards with this thing or does the base game pretty much have everything?

I'm sure you understand the rules in practice, but this could use some clarification. Even without bouncing the blocking creature, the damage would not have gone through, to the opposing player. It would have been dealt to the blocking creature, assuming said blocker didn't have a way to kill the attacker via first strike, or protection from the attacker. With the blocker removed from combat, however, there is no longer any target to assign damage to, so the attacking creature deals no damage. Like you said, sinced the attacker was already blocked, the damage cannot be assigned to the opposing player. However, had the attacking creature had trample, then that creature would have had all of it's combat damage dealt to the opposing player.

Thanks a lot, both of you. I figured it wasn't a bug since it was happening consistently. I guess it keeps the unsummons from being all-powerful this way.

All signs point to a fair amount of DLC. There's even an option on the main menu for it.

Whether it's single cards, new decks, booster packs etc etc remains to be seen.

You can actually use it to your advantage when you're on defense, having a weaker creature that you want to keep around blocking a stronger creature you need blocked and then unsummoning your own creature. You get to keep your creature (albeit in a bit of a mana expensive way) and you get your block of. So it's not just a drawback of the card; it's a feature.

Kifimbo said:
Because if you use more than 2 colors, you will often have mana problems. You will need a land of one color, but it won't come and you'll lose many turn doing next to nothing. Using three colors also doesn't bring many advantages.

Two colors is alright. Back in the days, I had a really good blue/white deck.

Actually, this generally depends on the mana fixing available. It is quite common in the current standard to see decks running 4 to 5 colors. A deck I've been messing around with plays Red, Green and Black for the most part but has Blue mana for a card called Cryptic Command (think of a mix of boomerang, cancel, tap all creatures an opponent controls and draw a card, choose two of those effects when you play it).

3+ colors would probably be the norm right now. The lands in standard make it too easy to get different mana types and there are some awesome spells in 3 colors.

There are really some crazy decks right now that use 3 colors. Finest hour bant, for example, can run a t1 hierarch, t2 Shorecrasher Mimic, t3 Rafiq of the many (attack for 14 damage with trample), turn 4 Finest Hour (attack for 14, attack again for 18). The decks in this game might have gotten a couple creatures out.

I'm a returning player after a 10-12 years hiatus, so I didn't know about all the new multi color options.

As I said, it depends on the mana fixing available. I think that legacy and vintage both revolve around single/dual color decks though, mainly because they have so many cards to choose from in each color.

Can someone tell me if this is a bug, or just part of the rules?

I'm playing with the blue deck currently. On several occasions, I've played Boomerang (or another type of instant unsummon/destroy creature card) on an opponent's creature after they set it up to block me. The spell seems to work: the opponent's card goes back in their hand (or graveyard) and the attack arrow from my creature goes to the player. But, the attack never registers. The little animation plays, but nothing is taken off my opponent's life.

Once a creature is blocked, it won't deal damage to the opposing player*. Even if you remove the blocker, it's already been blocked.

* Unless it has trample.

One of the decks is a Jund-themed RGB deck with a bunch of the Alara cards.

What the FUCK?

How is that even possible?!? Does the game just end there?

Funny story, a few years ago I managed to keep one of those guys out long enough for my opponent to run out of cards to draw, giving me the game. I was at somewhere around -130 life.

Huh?? It does just what it says.

Slightly related but I thought some might be interested...Lightning Bolt has essentially been confirmed for M10 (11th edition) I'm sure some here will know why this huge news!

It just means that the person with that card out can't lose by reaching 0 or below in health or by running out of cards until that card is removed from play somehow (killing it, etc).

And I agree with the earlier comments about the Green-Black elf deck - with the right draws, you can easily win in a couple turns with ridiculously powered up elves. I can see a good blue player with the right combination of counter/bounce spells and enough heavy fliers being a decent counterdeck, but I have yet to unlock more than a few of the cards for that one to give a true judgement call on it. Likewise with the black deck, only have unlocked 1 card with it so far, but again with the right draws focusing on discards can also give the green-black deck fits. Especially if it's short of land cards, being a dual color deck and all.

Is someone going to organize a GAF tourney or anything soon, or some other regular gathering? :D

I'm kind of disappointed in the black deck. Maybe it's because I love Suicide Black and I'm more used to seeing most mono-black decks go that route, but the deck could use more one oe two casting cost cards. Too many cards in the 3+ range.

But I guess for newbies, suicide black would be confusing and shocking for them to use. :lol

It's a decent beginner's mono-black deck, and given the other decks its competing with it's ok. Some typical black creatures in a discard-oriented deck. With the right draws, you can really screw up someone rather early. Getting the rack out then hitting back to back mind rots is always amusing, especially against some of the slower decks in this like the mono-blue or mono-green. It'll only really have trouble with the faster red or white decks and the multi-colored ones.

you need to use the Boomerang on one of your own cards.

Thanks for the tip... I was doing that earlier, but I kept choosing one of the dragons and of course they had summoning sickness. Your tip allowed me to make the correct choice. My mind was just stuck on the dragons...

BenjaminBirdie said:

You just have to kill it before you can win; otherwise, the other dude just sits there at zero life, not losing.

It shows up in Challenge #8.

I really liked that challenge. I was glad some of them really involved thinking outside the box.

I figured out what card to bounce after a while but then I actually picked the right card to steal by accident. It wasn't until after I stole it, attacked, and won that I actually went back and realized why the guy couldn't block right. :lol

I still can't input my code for the free card. It says code is invalid. Has anyone been able to successfully apply for the free card?

also, is there a way to concede during on-line games? I don't mind getting beat, but when people start piling it on or you get bad draws, you should be able to concede.

Just played about 4 games in a row online where the other person quit just as I was taking my final turn to defeat them. I can't believe how long it took me to get the Duelist achievement (5 ranked wins). I must have played 3-4x the amount of winning games before I got it. I don't think I've ever left so many sad faces for other players in another game.

They need to fix this... I know I take my licks when I'm getting beat and stay in for the person to get a win, but there should also be a concede button. If you know you are going to lose and the guy on the other side is stringing you along, then you should be able to "properly" quit which gives the winner a win, but makes it so you can quit with dignity.

The AI in this game is alright, but it has a lot of issues.

One of its oddest traits is how it uses Giant Growth. The computer will use Giant Growth just about whenever it gets the opportunity. This creates odd situations. The oddest of situations occurred for me in a game I just played.

I was playing the elf deck against the CPU playing a powered-down mono-green deck. I had two Moonglove Winnowers on the board. He had a Spined Wurm. I attacked with a Winnower, and he let it through.

On his turn, he attacked into my waiting Moonglove Winnower. Naturally, I blocked. After blocking, he played not one, not two, not three, but FOUR Giant Growths on his doomed Wurm. Its 17/16 ass died at the end of combat.

It was weird.

Playing magic is every nerds closet hobby isn't it ? No one wants to admit they enjoy it because we all know what the people who play in public usually look like and none of us want ourselves associated with that.... but funny enough if we all went out and played it more often perhaps that 12 year old nerd or 35 year old beardo stereotype would go away.

I finally tried the trial version today and it seems neat enough, probably cheaper then buying the cards atleast.

Wow there are some Magic nerds here.

That said I downloaded it this weekend and it was the 2nd time I ever played magic. I actually really enjoy it though!

Problems that could be fixed. Once the manas grouped, put a number telling me how many mana I have tapped / untapped.

Let me look in my graveyard, especially when I have cards that specifically deal with my graveyard.

Why does the green deck have no fliers, nothing to dispel certain cards? Why is it gimped.

Anyway I really like the game, few issues could have been done better but at least I kind of know how to play.

When you think flying creatures, you don't think green. Hell, green has cards specifically to deal with fliers.

Hail to the KING baby
You can look in the graveyard with the right stick free move that lets you look all around the board. Be careful using right stick when someone is playing Mind Rot, for some reason it gets stuck, but actually if you click the right stick it'll unfreeze and let you choose your discards.

Green deck has one card that defends flying--Giant Spider. But yeah, it's pretty lacking in terms of counters. Still though, get Troll Ascetic (or almost anything really) and Blanchwood Armor and you don't have to worry about any of that fancy stuff.

Maybe a group gamertag or sone regular chatty partys?

My fave card is blanchwood armour by far, two of those cards combine are devos!

Bullshit.
I open hands of either two lands or six and and if it is two I do not draw another land for 5 turns or so and if it is six I keep drawing land.

Jesus FUCK. I just want to win one game today. Ever since I got to the 7th fucker on the campaign I have been going at LEAST 50% land/non-land draws. Often much more. I can't do dick all with 2 creatures and a couple Unsummons and Boomerangs.

Oh and the AI doesn't deal with The Rack AT ALL. Even if it has three cards, it will still play all three of those cards and not bother saving any cards to avoid taking damage at the beginning of each turn.

ElyrionX

Oh and some guy whose ass I was about to beat ragequit on me in my first online game. We were both playing the Elf deck and I had like 5 elves out and he put out Elvish Champion at the end of his turn which gave all my elves forestwalk and +1/+1 and he had only 10 health left. :lol

His handle was Renegade oCrack or something like that.

EDIT: Also, is anyone using the Red-Green-Black deck extensively? Correct me if I'm wrong but that deck is near useless without the unlocks. There's just way too little Mountains in it as well.

Kifimbo

Another AI bug: if he has X lands, he is using the regeneration skill an X times the same turn on the same creature (skeleton).

beat the campaign last night. overall, it was not that difficult. used the green deck for all but the last duel (nothing is as satisfying as using overrun and beating people into the ground).

the last guy definitely was the hardest but i used the green and black deck but i got him to used most of his counters and creature destruction early on and then overran him with elves.

the puzzle's weren't too bad. the only one i couldn't figure out with out help was 6. it would be nice if they added a new puzzle every couple of weeks or so.

i'm kinda mad that you cant win the blue/black deck but it will probably be in a dlc pack later.

This game has huge potential for DLC...evil bastards.

I haven't had too much time to play this weekend, I am at about the 7th person in campaing using the first white deck.

I was embarrased as hell when the first puzzle took me like 30 minutes when the answer was so damn easy.....In my defence I haven't played in a long time :lol
