Major Square Enix Announcement Next Week

If they added more quest related XP bones, they could easily provide an alternative to standard leveling practices. However, that would require a full overhaul of the quest system which is a big task in and of itself. I don't mind the leveling between 1-60 or so myself but it's really after 60 that it becomes a nasty pain in the butt (when the XP requirement is astronomical). Leveling aside, there are issues with the game that they could improve on for a sequel MMO like better character customization, more cohesive class/party elements, and etc.

I think FFXI is just about perfect outside of the overly group centric play. Although, despite the large ammount of content, some more in-depth instancing and more meaning to quests aside from fame would be lovely.

While I apprecaite what they were trying to do, and prefer it in the end to the alternative; the game needs to develop solo/duo activities, not least of which including experience building.

The game shouldn't become Warcraft, god forbid, I enjoy Warcraft but they're totally different beasts. However, making a compromise would be really nice.

Also, Jonny is right. The game was built around PS2, and plays far, far tighter and more intuitively than, IMHO, any MMO in existance on a Dual Shock 2.

Gah Jonny, you make every little way I look onto the game at the moment, depressing. I don't think I could take the idea of a sequel so soon all that well. Perhaps since I've paced myself quite a bit in the game and am still pretty far behind in terms of getting things done, I have no 75+ characters, I really haven't done much in terms of the missions and questing, aside from getting my Airship pass and unlocking things in Promathia. But I just really see myself spending quite a long time in the game because of that, maybe I should be rushing through things to save on cash, but I'm enjoying the experience at the moment. Jumping ship with in a year or so just wouldn't be an option for me, especially after I spent to much money and time on this game and yet it still feels like it's barely gotten very far at all.

I agree there are some huge issues with certain areas of the game, mainly leveling and things that are centric around that, along with economic issues. These things could be fixed within the current system I think, but perhaps it would be pointless if you and many others feel that it's too late to be an option. Maybe this is just my own problem, but everything I'm doing just seems in vain if Square plans to end this thing and move on to next gen, just to get their console thing going again, which none of us at all know what the current situation is, in terms of population.

I just couldn't do it. But if that's what majority of people feel to be the best choice of action to get the game interesting again, well so be it, but I think it'll make just as many people unhappy as there currently are.

The leveling honestly isn't much worse than old school The Vision (tm) EQ.

Actually I think FFXI is the true hardcore successor to EQ as it's challege curve is very similar to the OLD EQ (except without 4 hour corpse runs).

I just simply don't think they're going to shake things up, Darth. I believe the heads of the game have moved onto other projects.

And while they could formulate solutions to newcomers and fix other quibbles with enough effort, they don't seem to be making any strives towards doing so.

Plus they've already planned a pretty subtle relaunch if they had intended to bring back old players and draw in new ones alike.

They won't end the game any time soon. But as things stand, I think the base formula is set in stone. And I believe only upper teir content and typical expansion will be handled.

What would please me immensily, is simply having some fresh servers opened for newcomers and old players disgruntled at all the high end drama presented on the current ones. It's amazing what a fresh start can do at times.

I agree, but really they need to shake that, or at least shake the image of that. We've seen from WoW how popular an MMORPG can be if things are done differently. I'm sure Square Enix is envious of its success, but they can probably achieve the same themselves with the FF franchise. They can't do it without starting from scratch, though.

(Disclaimer: I don't play WoW or any other MMORPG at the moment, so please don't think I'm biased against FFXI for some special reason)

The problem with WoW is people hit the level cap too fast and then sit around bored. If I'm playing $15 a month for a MMO (or $13 in the case of FFXI), I want it to last longer than a month or two.

There are psychopaths in WoW who have hit the cap within a matter of days... 3-4 is the record currently I believe.

Well, I really don't think they will either, any little wishes, like job classes and new skills are just things I'd like to see myself, I don't really expect them to come at all. I gave that up along time ago. :lol

I don't know, we won't be seeing a revamp of any systems for sure, but I think they could still ease the pain somewhat of how things are currently done. The last major update seemed to make me hopeful, with the new fishing system and whatnot, and of course the previous one before that, with all the crazy content that got added. Perhaps these are all just very minor in the long run and I'm looking at them the wrong way, but I think it's just a little too early to throw the towel not he game in terms of it being fixed in areas. I'm never really disappointed at all when each major update arrives and there aren't any groundbreaking changes made, in fact most of what they've done so far as been pretty pleasing to read.

But perhaps I'm just too clueless or just too caught up in the game to see this issues as huge problems. In fact the only huge problem I see at the moment is how I'm simply not making friends in the game anymore. Ever since I cam back this month I've barely added anyone to my Friend's list when previously it seemed like a daily event. I still have the same old linkshell, there has been a severe lack of events lately within what's left of my friends. I used to conquest weekly, or go off a do a mission, or help others get missions done, but lately it's just been nothing and I've been forced to keep myself entertained with leveling. Yeah I can solve all this with a new linkshell, but I've had no luck on getting one. :P

Gah, this is all Jonny's fault. The game is now just a boring, bland, useless frontier of mind numbing button clicking. Actually I'm just kidding of course, I love you Jonny. :p

Ok Famitsu should be in the hands of certain people TOMORROW. So this is your LAST CHANCE to guess what this could be! Bumping in advance to generate hype for tomorrow's "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT"! :lol :lol :lol

I've played and loved my traditional RPGs since the old days, and I don't mind stopping the flow of battle to go into menus. Part of the old-school charm, and I don't want that shit fucked up for some new silly touchscreen idea. I just want an oldschool FF6, with the best looking hi-res sprites imaginable with super detailed art (Yoshitaka Amano-directed, of course) and perhaps flesh out the stories of some of the more...ridiculous characters.

You have an awfully strange way of spelling "convenient."

By the way, when is this thing supposed to go down? Anyone know? I searched "day" in this thread, but it didn't turn up anything..

That'd be awesome!

I really want this news to be FFVIII related. It's the best selling FF yet they do not milk it :(

ok even if we don't get any FFXII info tomorrow or on Friday, we will definitely see something on April 22.

Ok, ok, first of all, sorry if I'm wrong, but check this out :
it seems the next issue of Dengeki PS2, out on april 22d, will contain new info about KH2 AND FFxii!!!
Then again, I could be wrong since I don't understand japanese fluently...but this could mean upcoming news for both games in the next famitsu!

I found the link on kh2.co.uk btw

It says 'The story in the world of Ivalice', that's all.

That doesn't mean we'll definitely see something NEW. Remember the Famitsu FFXII "feature" a month or so back? :lol

While you can get some decent information from the more dedicated folks there, the community on the whole I never found to be even passable, even on the game boards as you say.

Two words: Dragon Quarter.

At least they provided a hearty laugh in GA's Dragon Quarter topics..

I dunno, I don't read those topics. I have been posting there since 99 or 98 and I think the game boards are really good.

It's even funnier when you get people complaining about sequels and stagnant developers/publishers, yet in threads like this all they want is old games ported to new systems.

Somehow at NGG, it's 1000 stupidass threads in 100. I don't know how they do it, but they do.

Especially because it's ALWAYS the same exact people.

As much as I hate GameFaqs and their complete disregard of intelligence I sometimes wonder if it's truly any better than pathetic trolling of people who desperately seek attention that sometimes goes unchecked here.

I'm assuming the products will be Valkyrie Profile 2 and Code Age. Duckroll, please create a new thread once the title is revealed tomorrow..:)

That HR page has been up for some time. Yes, it *is* a confirmation that Square is working on a new Seiken Densetsu game but nothing more. This isn't new and doesn't mean the announcement will be regarding that, it's simply one of the many possibilities. :D

Nothing yet.
Expecting something tomorrow. Might be embargoed though! :@

Don't worry, Japanese subscribers to Famitsu Weekly are more reliable than you so we don't have to worry about an embargo. :D
