Simmering resentment between China and Japan could be escalating, according to findings that 53.4 percent of Chinese citizens polled expect the two nations to go to war as early as 2020.

Relations between the countries look worse for wear according to an annual Sino-Japanese poll by Japanese NGO Genron and newspaper China Daily.

The poll, which was released right before the second anniversary of Japan's purchase of the Senkaku islands, showed that a record 93 percent of the Japanese have an "unfavorable impression" of the Chinese; 86.8 percent of Chinese feel the same way about the Japanese.

The long-standing mutual aversion between the Chinese and Japanese has existed for centuries, and has been recently exacerbated by the 2012 dispute over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands in the East China Sea.

over resentment...

Dear god North Korea, please do something really stupid really soon, this is why you exist!

Come on guys, they just want the Olympics to be held to in Osaka! :D

This is what happens when China has a rebirth and Japan turns to nationalism in a decline. Both populations have their reasons to bring about petty conflict, whether over a few isles or whatever.

Some daft islands, that's the sort of nonsense you go to war over when your power is ebbing.

If it's a small-scale war over the Senkaku Islands, then I don't think the US even should get involved. These small border disputes are not worth human lives.

Haha, China isn't that stupid. They want to dominate the pacific by being an economic superpower. Why risk more of a US presence and an expensive war when you can take over without a single shot? I'm sure China told North Korea to chill the hell out when they were saying they were going to go to war for the same reason.

What would cause this war? Some tiny islands in the East China Sea? Sounds like it's really worth all the casualties. Not to mention US backing Japan and all the money that's tied up between these countries. Not happening.

Problem with that is that there's a certain giant standing right behind Japan. :)

Japan doesn't even need that Giant, Japan can win (For the foreseeable future atleast) any naval fight against China. Infact it doesn't matter how big the Chinese Military gets today they will have to engage Japan in the sea and Japan is the one country that can pump out High-Tech Aircraft Carriers/naval assets should the need Arise. So China will be highly stupid to go to war with Japan anytime in the first half of this century.

Neither of these countries are stupid enough for a full scale war that would end up destroying Japan and crippling China even without the US backing Japan.

Expect does not mean want.
Also, China is the largest trade partner of Japan, and Japan is the 2nd largest trade partner of China.
War is not going to happen.

Not happening. This is one the few times where I believe we would honor our military treaties.

This. Whenever I hear something like this I assume there will be no China vs Japan. It would be China vs the US because as soon something jumped off the entire US Navy would very likely be moved into the area.

Do they really have that sort of manufacturing infrastructure standing by? You think they will pull a United States and pump out a carrier a day for a year?

China is sort of the manufacturing super power of the world, they can make damn good products when they choose to.

Who? The US won´t go to war with China for Japan.

Are you serious? Japan is not the Ukraine. The US has military bases in japan and has explicitly stated many times that they will go to the defense of Japan. People are getting too caught up in the US not running to the defense of Ukraine and thinking that applies everywhere.

Nationalism is a serious problem in almost all east asian countries. They all have dicks trying to out dick each other. This is not a recent or distinctly Japanese thing.

Japan never signed a peace treaty with Russia... their beef started during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905, when Japan had one of the most blitzering military victories of all time, ushering one of the final straws before the fall of the Zahrs and the rise of Lenin.

Japan is the most russianphobic country in the world, and they will be needed in an open conflict against Russia. In many ways I think Japan is one of USAs most important allies. Perhaps outside of mainland Europe, the most important.

I'd wager the expectations are distorted by China's state narrative about Japan's so-called militarism. Based on my interactions, more than a few Chinese actually believe Japan is going back to the days of imperialism and is gearing up to fight a war of aggression. Since that is complete nonsense, the real possibility of a war is virtually nil.

Not Really, China's Manufacturing force can overwhelm anyone. But While Quantity is a quality in of its own, Japan does have Quality and they also have the expertise to build Aircraft Carriers something China does not posses and wont for a long time. Besides Japan has the third Largest share of Manufacturing output in the world, The next worst thing is China going to war against the United States/Russia.

Who? The US won´t go to war with China for Japan.

The Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan says otherwise.

In 2012, the United States clarified in a statement over the dispute over the Senkaku Islands that the US-Japan Security Treaty does cover the islands, and obliges the US to defend them as Japanese territory.

In April 2014, US President Barack Obama declared unequivocally that the Senkaku islands would be covered by the bilateral Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security in the event of an armed attack on them. This was the first time a sitting president had made America’s commitment explicit and was intended to reassure the government of Japan.

While much animosity exists between China and Japan, I don't see a gain for either side worth a war between the two. They won't do it.

Right now my bet's on Japan due to better troops and equipment, but that could change in the future. A conflict probably will happen at some point, so maybe Japan really should start to bulk up its forces a bit.

Every one so far has mentioned how USA would back up Japan if a war breaks out with China but people are forgetting that Russia and China have a close relationship and are both communist nations. If USA was to enter the ring while China and Japan are throwing bombs at each other, expect Russia to enter as well.
