In the May issue of Total Film magazine, currently available on newsstands nationwide, writer David S. Goyer discusses the secrecy the team behind "Man of Steel" has maintained leading up to the film's June premiere in theaters. Here's an excerpt:

“It’s something Chris [Nolan] tried hard to do with the Batman films,” said Goyer, who had script and/or story credits across The Dark Knight trilogy. “I’m genuinely pleased with how much secrecy we’ve been able to maintain.

“There’s so much of the movie that people don’t know, that hasn’t been touched upon. The trailer’s just the tiniest, tiniest tip of the iceberg.”

And on the subject of ‘darkness’, Goyer explained:

“Relatable and realistic doesn’t necessarily mean dark. I think it would be inappropriate for us to approach a Superman film as if we were doing The Dark Knight.

“The Batman films are a lot more nihilistic; Superman has always been a story about hope.”

dat dark and gritty superman!

So ... nothing about the Jimmy Olsen spoilers about him
being a girl on this version
yet ?

Superman is hope, and to those with the lazy uninformed opinion that he is boring, you couldn't be more wrong.

Superman is not boring ... but he DOES have some pretty boring shit, wich the writer makes him too powerfull and try to make us fear for his life and not put a single weakness of his into play =P

A friend explained best that a bad Superman writer will write a REALLY BAD story, but a good Superman writer will write an AWESOME story.

The shit that makes Supes "boring" is the shit that makes any powerful superhero boring: bad writers who write boring effortless action with poor characterization.

Of course, Supes also has the problem of people trying to make him Jesus in tights.

Precisely. How often has Batman had juuust the right gadget or an impossibly perfect plan? Bad stories don't equate to a bad source character.

Goyer on how he became involved.

“Chris (Nolan) and I were working on The Dark Knight Rises, working on the story; we were blocked. We agreed to part ways for a couple of weeks and just see if something had bubbled at the surface. So I went back to my home office. I was wasting time and procrastinating and took out an archive edition of some of the original Superman comic books, Action comic books and started rereading them because I couldn’t figure out this plot point on Dark Knight Rises, I just randomly sat down one afternoon and wrote up some ideas for Superman

When I met with Chris Nolan again in another week or so he said, “Have you worked out the problem on the Dark Knight Rises?” I said, “No,” he said, “What have you been doing?” and I said, “Well, I had this idea for Superman,” and because Chris likes to procrastinate as well he said “let’s hear it,” so I told him. And he literally called Jeff Robinov, who’s the head of Warner Bros, while I was sitting there and said, “Jeff, Dave just told me this take on Superman and you need to hear it, I’d like to produce it. Can we come in?” And we went in the next day. That’s how it happened. No, we weren’t trying to do it, it just happened.”

Dat Nolan cred.

One phone calla and Nolan gets shit done.

I wonder if he could call WB and be like "I've got this great idea for a new Tango and Cash..." and the exec would be like "Where do I sign?"

From the beginning of the article:
In addition, I’ve spoken to a few people that have seen the film and everyone is raving. June 14th cannot arrive soon enough.

I think WB are starting to get ready to kick into gear their marketing gear as Henry Cavill is in Japan this week to promote the film and WB's Facebook and Twitter accounts posted this still and caption:

"My father believed that if the world found out who I really was, they'd reject me. He was convinced that the world wasn't ready. What do you think?"

Word is that they're supposed to be debuting new posters this week ahead of WonderCon thats also this weekend.

Watching the movie, I guess they never solved that problem with TDKR.
Now it makes sense why that movie was the way it was, they were working on Man of Steel!
;)

I've said it since I first saw the trailer. Same character is also in the comic-con trailer.
If that's not a female Olsen I will eat my hat.

I'm not sure if you understand PR speak culture. I do. I am an expert.

It's about honor etc.

But Occam's Razor should tell you that Jimmy Olsen is now a girl.

"no = no
can't talk about tha = yes"

?

if so ... FUCK YEAH =D

I'm not sure I see the point to making Olsen female. I mean I'm sure they'll make it work, I just don't see why.

Because a newspaper having more than one female reporter makes more sense now than in the 50's

Imagine if Goyer had read some Wonder Woman or Flash comics. >.>

Hype for female Olsen who I barely noticed in the trailer and assumed was Lois.

Oh wow I hadn't realized that was supposed to be Lawrence Fishburne. Neo should invite him to take a drink from his fountain of youth.

Jenny's too obvious. It has to be similar, but not something people would immediately expect. Ginny fits this approach.

Having a daughter enter the adult film industry at 18 has its effects.

The rumor about that actress is that she isn't a female Jimmy... she's
just related to him, his older sister or possibly a cousin (kinda like the whole Lois and Chloe on Smallville stuff before they cast Lois) and that he will just be name dropped in the first movie

I'm not really sure why I put Jimmy "most people don't give a fuck about him Olsen" stuff in spoiler, but just in case.

"Can you talk about your decision to not include Lex Luthor in Man of Steel?

Goyer: I don’t think anyone has every confirmed that we haven’t included him."

lol Batman Begins ending here we come.

lol wtf? what's the point of name dropping him and presumably including him in future movies?

it not like he's some extremely important character that's integral to all things superman... lol

Fucking GETTING OLD has its effects. Past a certain age, you're no longer heavy. You're SUCCESSFUL.

Take a gander at Nathan Fillion's successful ass over on Castle.

I'll say this, at least the cattiness is equal opportunity. :)

Just you wait, James "Turtle Boy" Olsen is going to become Man of Action and take down Darkseid.

lol Countdown was such a bad series, but I can't help but enjoy parts of it.

I love BB and TDK but dear lord I hope this film doesnt try so hard to be realistic/gritty/serious. Its an alien dude flying around in a red cape, you are allowed to be less cynical about the whole superhero thing.

Beats the hell out of me, like I said it's a rumor. They could name drop him and decide to never use him in the sequels realizing no one gives a flying crap about him, kinda like the Jimmy in Returns *yawn*. Hell he could show up at the planet and that woman could be like "Clark Kent meet Jimmy Olsen he's my "blank" kinda like Obi-Wan meet Anakin Skywalker lol

Honestly his character has always felt completely worthless in the movies and I could give two shits about him being in this film. I don't care if he's changed to a female as long as she can act.

If it's a rumor, it's a rumor cooked up by people hoping that Jimmy Olsen isn't a girl. I doubt it's sourced back to anything remotely plausible.

SuperheroHype is terrible for that sorta shit.

I forgot where I read it, but I didn't get it this time from Superherohype. I'll have to dig (I don't really want to again cause I don't care for the character), but like you said most of the times rumors and no comments (Goyer) when it comes to small stuff like this usually means a change has been made. Jimmy Olsen really hasn't been important in the films unless people find the concept of him snapping a photo or being yelled at exciting, so maybe they felt it was time for a change. The thing is the Jimmy being a female is a rumor as well... so who knows.

He was always handled better on tv back in the day... well accept for what Smallville did which was hilarious lol

lol @ MisterHero

So if they use Lex in a sequel would you want a actor closer in age to Cavil or older because I'd like Bradley Cooper for Luthor and I think he's around the same age.

At least they will go a different direction from the Gene Hackman Lex next time. Spacey could have turned in a more interesting Lex performance if they hadn't been so focused on being a sequel to an old series.

There have been basically three Lex performances so far when you look at Hackman, Rosenbaum, and Brown. All of them more or less work within the context of their vehicle. I'd like to see something entirely different from these.

Edit: I've never seen more than 4 seasons of Smallville. So I don't really know what becomes of Rosenbaum's performance. I know he left. That's about it.

He turned into Comic Book Lex completely at the end.
