A little thing I thought about:

Bleach is now a better Naruto than Naruto ever was.

For me, although I agree with the general idea that Naruto was never "good", early Naruto's strongest points were mostly:

1. characters other than NaruSasu weren't always super important, but at least they were interesting to watch.

2. A large number of fights had very interesting tactical reasons for being enjoyable. When I think of pre-timeskip fights a lot of the characters were essentially immume to beam-spam and random powerups and essentially had to rely on pulling out interesting strategies or finding a way to make an established move work against a weird opponent.

Examples include:

1. Shikamaru almost always being the underdog power-wise and having to rely almost entirely on intelligence and surprise to win.

2. Characters like Shino and Kankuro having powers that verge on horror where the sheer lethality and "imma screw up your plans"-aspect of the powers make them far scarier than having a godzilla power level.

3. Someone like Lee giving a huge "fuck you" salute to the idea of simply power-leveling your powerful genius techniques and actually seemingly standing a chance against genius characters like Sasuke and Gaara.

When I look at .. honestly, the last two years or so, I find myself fairly uninterested in battles because of so many ..replacement-strategies that take place.

1."find an interesting way to use an established technique" has essentially been entirely replaced by "pull-shittu-out-of-my-ass-no jutsu", which is why almost any character who doesn't have this powerup fetish has been rendered near-useless.

2. It's become increasingly clear to me that Naruto's types of powers become increasingly boring and stupid with the "ninja rule" in place. The more ninjas fight at the same time, the more pathetic and meaningless their powers become.

(What's the difference between 1 ninja using a technique, and a 100 ninjas using that technique? When a 100 ninjas use it you know it'll fail and get overpowered!)

3. Not saying early Naruto didn't suffer from this at times, but the early battles often had quite some variation and almost horror-esque creepy techniques in place. As mentioned, something like Kankuro's dolls could easily fit in a horror story.

But when I look at the current villains and fights.. It just feels empty, the villains are about as threatening as a lackluster DBZ character. They're not scary because it's horrific to think about one of their techniques hitting you. They're "scary" cause zomg town-destroying beam spam!1!

In contrast, the few times Bleach gives someone who isn't Ichigo a decent fight we often get pretty absurd Bankai power reveals, a fight like Facebook v.s. Byakuya actually makes you wonder: How on earth do you defeat a power this absurd and seemingly omnipotent. The payoff becomes "Ohh..that's pretty clever."- rather than "good guy wins cause of random hax lol".

If my hope for the current powerup arc aiding other characters than just Ichigo comes true, and we dear lord please get a more interesting BG for the fights than "empty sky" I can actually imagine enjoying quite a few of the future Bleach fights. A hope I've long lost for Naruto.

Anyway I'm just curious, but am I alone in thinking this is the big reason Naruto feels so lame right now? Interesting battles and strategies were one of early Naruto's stronger points imo, so the total change in how fights seem to work just bores me to death. So far even that both Bleach and OP often beat Naruto at what used to be it's main selling point to me.

All you said

Exactly my thought.

Pre time skip Naruto fights were a mix of different techniques, not even strong, plan and ingenuity. Hiding, transforming, combining..etc

Now, well it's mostly signature move on signature move, Naruto attacks panel is now clones>rasengan/shuriken rasengan. The kyuuby's aura doesn't add a damn thing, except the occasional black ball.

Still, bleach is not much better, and the attacks range of a bleach character is even less diversified than actual naruto...

My biggest problem with Bleach is mostly with Ichigo though. He gets the most fighting, the longest fighting and honestly has the least interesting techniques.

But at the same time there's quite a few Bleach characters, captains etc. who still haven't revealed their bankai yet, yet their shikai alone was interesting enough to make for a good battle.

Kubo isn't into drawing backgrounds and he never was.

Kubo isn't into drawing backgrounds and he never was.

I actually went through early Bleach to dissect this claim a while back, he's drawn proper and/or "decent enough" backgrounds before.

He's never been into scenery porn, sure. But there's a difference between "background" and "literally nothing".

Onani Master 1-3

This dude seems like he is seriously just a couple steps away from rape.

Kind of boring so far.

Also, why the hell is he called majesty by the otaku guy? I was half thinking it was the MC just hearing himself being called that by someone he sees as lesser than him.

Beelzebub
This new arc look like it should be fun but none of them should be a match for Oga .

Side note one of my fav arcs in Gintama going on right now in the anime .
Everyone should watch or at least read Gintama .

I didn't like the MC at all and always thought he was a total ass.

I just read the first chapter again and most of the panels didn't really have a background. Then again, that could be because of the focus on action.

Loveless v4

Lovely bondage Ritsuka color page, her comments about drawing it were pretty interesting though taking it to the extreme though not approved by the editor for another page was a bit funny too, poor Soubi in that situation. Good volume with the fight with the zeroes though it had lots of touches of girls love. Ritsuka's friend from the other school is funny, wish we got a color page of his smile there. Now to wait months for v 5 and 6 :(

When I did my "research" I read 20 chapters or so I think. It's not so much about if Bleach used backgrounds often and it's more about if Bleach had decent backgrounds ever.

I looked this up because a few people in Mangagaf (Big One and some others) were actually arguing Kubo is physically incapable of drawing backgrounds.

Which is obviously a load of bullcrap.

Well, that was never my point. When Kubo can be bothered to draw backgrounds, they're always decent enough, no question.

And why would anyone argue with Biggie about Bleach?

Antiwhippy

the holder of the trombone
Trying to start up pun pun again, but goddamn every time I think about how depressing it gets I just want to stop.

Can someone tell me what the depression levels are now? I think I've only ever finish 1 or 2 volumes. It's been awhile.

I'll push through though.

...then again why are we reading naruto for?

1. Bandwagoning
2. Nostalgia
3. Masochistic pleasure
4. Undeniable Bromance without limits
5. Implied yaoi
6. Cause we trick ourselves into thinking it's almost over
7. Because too many people argue you can't bash something without reading it
8. Cause it updates when Naruto/Bleach do
9. Because we expect Sasuke to die
10. Because we're deluded
11. Because it's funny to hate on it
12. Because Sauce is so dark and deep, it makes me weird in my pants
13. Hinata = Best Waifu ever
14. TenTen's character development.

Pick your poison.

Added some important reasons I missed.

Blah Blah Blah Naruto sucks

Actually, the reason I hate Naruto is the same reason I think Kenichi has jumped the shark. Both main characters were never intelligent, or never even really that talented. Naruto had freakish levels of chakra, but was never good at controlling it. Kenichi was just a determinator. I'll break this off into two arguments:

In Naruto, it didn't start out as incredibly powerful spam. How could it? These were children. They definitely didn't have the power levels, so it was more of a chess match to win battles, and they had to innovate with simple techniques to do something unique. Battles were much more interesting when they couldn't level entire cities by themselves (which should have been the entire point of the ninja war. If you need an army, you shouldn't be able to destroy a city on your own). But I think this has succumbed to COOL FACTOR. Kishi thinks readers want to see increasingly powerful enemies, so now we have shinobi who can control/destroy entire villages. LAME. So now Naruto has hax-level power, and seemingly picks up S-level techniques overnight. I understand the Rasengan took a decent training arc to learn. But the combining it with elemental chakra happened pretty fast (ableit with a limitation that it fucked up his hand). But then we got over that pretty fast. And then it went from a chakra-draining superpower to something he could do several times with no explanation. Basically, everyone is OP in stupid ways, and hax powers are just getting annoying since battles are solved by talk-no-justu.

In Kenichi, it's a little different. He was a complete inversion of the normal shonen protagonist. Not talented in the least, but determined, and overcame enemies through sheer effort. He couldn't just learn a technique in the middle of a battle like every other protagonist. No, he had to walk to school for a week using some simple steps to be able to learn the half-step or whatever he did to defeat a simple school bully. Amazingly interesting and different, right? Oh, well now he can just pick up random techniques in the middle of battle, especially relating to his sei ki. Oh wait, now that we're fighting strong dudes, he's insanely talented? So we took an interesting premise, and decided "the hell with that, we're just going to do what everyone else is doing". LAME.

To be serious though, I read Naruto because I liked it when I started and I want to see how it ends.

Habit, I guess. And masochism, nostalgia, and secretly desiring the sauceinteresting developments.

Naruto is fine. Bleach is fine. One Piece is fine. They're comics written for teenagers. I'm not about to read too much into anything, and will accept them for what they are, nice action comics with enough plot to move the action along. Clearly One Piece is the best-written of the 3, but that doesn't make the other two targets for constant ridicule. There's a lot of shit manga out there that deserves far worse. I can name a few like Gantz and Berserk, for example. Stuff that's either paced so poorly, or just so nonsensical that it should be incinerated on sight. People just like to exaggerate how bad some of these manga are, and I don't know why. PEACE.

Berserk's only problem is it's release schedule. Pacing would be fine if we got more than 1 issue a year.

I swear I stopped reading Berserk like 3-4 years ago and there still on a boat. o_O

We get like 1 or 2 chapters a year (or something just as stupid) so it makes sense it hasn't moved much. They've gotta sit that guy's ass down and just make him draw it as a monthly.
