World Trigger 1 (raw)

i0UTBJY0VbbQE.jpg

Well shit, this is much better than Edison.

Billed with the words 'sci-fi action', World Trigger features the city of Mikado, where portals to another universe (maybe universes) open on occasion. Your SF monster invaders of the general sort come through to rampage, and are known as 'Neighbors'. Since their technology is quite advanced (nevermind that they look like giant organic sandworms), weapons from this world are hopeless against Neighbors.

Enter the 'World Boundary Defense Force', BORDER. They appear from nowhere with the tech to fight Neighbors, and have since established themselves in Mikado.

Osamu Mikumo is Glasses Kid. He tries to be cool by being a goody two shoes, and attempts to help everybody. Yuuma Kuga is our transfer student with a DTL-approvable character design. He doesn't give a shit about anything outside himself and his goals. Kuga comes with a flying talking machine called Replica (yes it is that black thing with the -__- face next to the shortie with white hair).

The art is nothing of particular note. Most of the chapter is exposition, setup and character introduction. However, few surprises lurk at the end, and make the characters more interesting than initial impressions would have them seem.

I wish the tech was more 'science' than 'magic', but what the hell. Right now the tech consists of 'Triggers', objects that coat the users in new outfits and weapons.

Verdict: Better than Hungry Joker's first chapter. Hope it survives past chapter 17.

I tried to read X-Men few years back, but I just can't deal with the art. I think it's mostly the body proportions that throw me off.

I'm sure it's not all bad and there's obviously bad art in manga too, but even the big comic series can look really terrible.
Should see some shoujo art.

Antiwhippy

the holder of the trombone
Asterix and tin tin >>>>>> most mangas.

Though I guess they're different from american comics. Being European and all.

Also I have a soft spot for the vertigo selection. The Sandman is one of the best works of fiction created. Then there's watchmen.

I like all the Marvel universe but never really read any comics. Too many reboots, different authors, too many stories...
Most mangas are ONE author (or a duo, whatever), ONE universe, ONE story. That's what I want.

I read and loved Scott Pilgrim though, amazing comic book. The author is Canadian though, not from the US.

I don't read trashy western comics, which are for kids. I only read deep and mature visual novels like Aunt Tits and Food Smut.

I have the same issues. It's why I mostly stuck to the vertigo stuff when I read comics. I really liked 100 Bullets, Fables, and Y the Last Man.

I haven't read US comics in a while.
There's too much bullshit to deal with. Especially with every continuity reboot and stupid decision they pull (Doctor Octopus is Spider-Man now! Buy our book!)
I know there are indie books and I should probably try those instead.

So many series and stuff make it hard to follow and it seems way pricier than following manga. Not to mention, there arent many good cartoon adaptations of comics so theres no incentive or reward for even reading with hopes of seeing it animated.

It's also difficult to enjoy a medium where tracing from porn is an accepted practice.

Sandman, Kingdom Come, Marvel, DMZ, 100 Bullets, Scott Pilgrim is great. That's all on the top of my head at the moment though. Still pressing the A button to get through 999's true ending. Can't this shit go any faster.

I can't read mainstream American comics. Too many different writers, retcons, events happening in other comics. It's just a mess.

Stuff like Sandman and Preacher is really good though.

Team Medical Dragon

There's a certain amount of fanaticism on part of the author, but I don't have a problem dismissing it so far. I think that this level of manga logic is a detriment to what is ostensibly an editorial piece, and brings down the effectiveness of the message. It should have been more grounded and less masturbatory. It's the same lack of tact that ruins so many other manga.

Superior artists and inferior publishing philosophies are the only differences between American and Japanese comic books.

Coming back from the The Amazing Spider-Man 2 plot synopsis thread, I'm really wondering ... do you guys read US comics too?

I used to. I was into X-Men mainly, with a bit of Wolverine and Lobo and some side stuff like the Infinity Gauntlets saga (I love Thanos to this day) and X-Force.
I've lost interest over the years though, as the plot doesn't have an end and stories don't really have resolutions, not the type of resolutions I like anyways.

Natsu had the best lines, loved it when he fended off the anti mage forces like they were simply fodder, smiling too. Gajeel and Rogue stuff was splendid. I wish we get to Shadow for a bit more but really definitely a huge improvement on Rogue and one of the best antagonist designs since Seigrain or Sting.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

I've read Kingdom Come and some of Sandman. I know how great Sandman is.

One Piece vol 1-3

Dropping. This clearly isn't for me. I hate everything about the art, from character/world designs to the action scenes, I hate Luffy, and I hate the inconsistent tones (everything is super deformed and fun, and then you have a bunch of soldiers ordered to commit suicide and they do it?!?). I'm probably going to try to catch up in Naruto instead (I stopped reading in 2005) so I can say I'm current in at least 1 of the big 3.

I'm not the biggest fan of American comics, but there are some I am passionately in love with. The Punisher stories published under the MAX imprint, especially Garth Ennis's run on the book from 2004-2009, are all incredible, and I'm a sucker for entirely painted comics, like Alex Ross's Marvels, or even X-Force: Sex and Violence.

Dragon Ball Z Full Color

I decided to check this out as the digital version is 99 cents atm on Weekly Shonen Jump, and it looks really nice, and well, colorful. Although I have to say it is a lot more brighter than the anime while I think it could use some better shading.

That's not inconsistent, that's One Piece. You're prejudging the plot by the art, which is the wrong approach. I wasn't a huge fan of the East Blue saga either, but at least stick with it until the end of the Baroque Works saga before you ditch it. That's when the manga starts to show its potential.

Bad move, really.

I thought it looked alright not needing any improvement, I think.

You know, I never noticed Piccolo having four fingers before until now.

But yeah, this is pretty great and I look forward to seeing the Cell saga colored.

This is probably the biggest problem I have with US comics. When I tried to get into X-Men, I didn't know where to start. Everything was so confusing and I was told just to start somewhere with some series from some autor.

Coming from manga, where one autor writes one story that takes place in one universe, with one or two sets of characters, it was pretty weird.

Should see some shoujo art.

I've read 7 Seeds. Everyone looked so fabulous in it!

Kintoki (one shot)

Way late reading this. There wasn't anything special but Kin is kind of a nice character with good ability. I think the writer reused a joke from a previous work (are you a girl...I couldnt tell, etc) but it had decent action. I do wonder if they'd be able to find the rest of the clan.

What do you mean by that?

Their obsession with proving a point about Japanese medical practices creates a pretty unbalanced and sometimes thoughtless story. The reality of the situation gets tossed aside for the sake of the agenda, and it's pretty transparent. It's preachy.

There's actually one point where a doctor that did everything in their ability according to the proper procedures was presented as medically negligent and immoral because they didn't think up an abnormal technique on the spot. It's one of those tropes where the author forgets that they're writing for a seinen audience that has critical thinking and tries way too hard to establish a savior figure against the crimes of society. This sort of binary storytelling doesn't really grab people once they've moved on from a certain reading level.

He gonna cry in the car
*ahem* I'll now attempt to diagnose the level of expertise several peeps here had in tag in their childhood. I'll only do those I know I can attempt, no wild guesses, sorry everyone else. Please confirm/deny.

upandaway: the terribelest ever oh my god.
haly: bad when "it", but can magically be clean the whole game if given the chance.
scy: average due to lack of practice. could become pretty good if he wanted.
grimace: fluctuating between really good and a bit bad, loses all motivation pretty quickly.
kurita: doesn't matter, he had fun.
b-dubs: his performance is directly correlated to whether he or one of his close friends started as "it" or not
wiseblade: good all-rounder, but would lose in a second against professional taggers
ignis: always tries out weird manipulative things to make him pull ahead and it never works out. dunno how he'll be if he ever tried it seriously.
kusagari: shh, keep it a secret from him, but any single time he had good performance can be directly linked to someone going easy on him
stat flow: became good through sheer hard work despite no talent. inspiring.
articalys: please come back next week
Stat Flow more like YOU KNOW

Well thats because the author was a former doctor so it criticizes the japanese health system.

Lame. Is the fight choreography any good? Some of Angel Densetsu's later chapters can be really powerful in impact, if not necessarily art.

That last page in particular is excellent.

It's a standard battle shounen. The choreography is up and down and the art is definitely more refined than Angel Densetsu with some really awesome monster designs. It's pretty good. Just don't expect it to be a light-hearted adventure following a nice guy with a mean face.

Anatomy man, how does it work?

Oh please. One Piece violates this every week... not to mention half of the filth posted in here. Comics and manga do this all the time.

Of course, there are comics and manga that don't do this as well.

There's a lot of good stuff in comics, especially Batman. These are all short series or stories that you can buy in volumes:
Hush
The Long Halloween
Justice League - Doom
Court of the Owls
Batman - Year One
Batman - Death in the Family

And that's just Batman. There's a lot of good shit in comics that manga can't touch and visa versa. Something for everyone.

There's nothing wrong with the research, I enjoy it a lot. It's the presentation of the story that bothers me. It's beginning to ground itself, but there still elements that take me out of the story. Some are just nitpicky like an ER manager having hair halfway to the floor flying around, but some are more crucial issues with pacing and structure and character that bother me. I actually think that the way it's formed makes it a less effective critique. It could even be a lot harsher and be successful but the way it is now kind of fails at the editorial level.

Kuroko no Basket 200

Well the game isn't over yet. Kuroko is in charge to finish the game. I really like the end of the chapter when
Kuroko goes up to Kise and says it's over. Kuroko vs Kise 1v1 would be good way to finish the game.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Is that suppose to be an example of tracing or an example of bad anatomy?

Tracing, I'm pretty sure. The anatomy comment was more along the lines of "apparently anatomy is so hard they have to resort to porn stars for female poses". If I wanted to make fun of comics anatomy I'd post something like:

Bonus:
Oh please. One Piece violates this every week... not to mention half of the filth posted in here. Comics and manga do this all the time.
Tracing porn stars in manga is rarely so obvious. At least, I can't think of any examples of the top of my head. If tracing porn is as common in manga as it is in superhero comics, at least the authors have the presence of mind to trace for smutty panels, rather than trying repurpose the silhouette of a girl getting reamed into some kind of action scene.

Traced to hell and back, probably, but at least it fits the scene:

I suppose since its a manga there are some liberties taken to make it appealing to a broader audience since I dont think its supposed to be an editorial piece.

I like the ER manager as he stands out because of the hair. The manga gets very political in the reform elections arc.

The ER manager is my favorite character, but that hair is absurd for a manga that takes so much care. And it's absolutely an editorial, but like I said, obstensibly so.
