Another Shonen Advice
Last time we mentioned about developing and introducing villains in series with with some tips like early mentions and for shadowing to name a few
Another thing that is very important in the world of ACTION Shonen is world building
World Building most have 4 unique points
- Scale
- Creating the Unknown
- A Sense of Travel
- A Sense of an Living Space/Atmosphere which is interconnected with each other when a significant event occurs
Scale could easily be made but without the sense of unknown wonders and diversity it leaves it quite flat...
These two points need to support each other
Having the unknown present allows the user to be intrigued with the series world and excited for future arcs in which the unknown could be further explored
A Shonen could rely on its good characters but a nicely developed world adds to that fact....
Another thing is creating a connected living space and or atmosphere
You don't need the world to be thriving with life but instead create scenarios where an event in one place is connected with the other place...
OP newspapers are a good example of the world being connected
If you do create a mostly lifeless post apocalyptic place adding a sense of unknown landscapes and or secret location spices the world up with the like of life
(Bleach's Hollow world was a lack of the above point)
A sense of travel/ voyage through the world is the least important of the points but could still add to the overall world building
If the said characters embark to their new locations they leave behind what they are familiar with... hang out with new allies and fight new enemies
Readers usually don't want to see the same old place appearing over and over again
It could be avoided with occasionally visiting the "hub" for only a few times throughout the series but a better way is to leave it entirely by not visiting the same place more then twice
One Piece and HXH do this well with HXH even leaving some main characters behind for awhile before meeting up for good times sake
This creates the illusion that the other characters also have goals and live their lives without the protagonist
Toriko finally left behind there "HUB" areas and also begin this journey/voyage scenario which is great
Bonus Tips
- Civilization and Open Landscape Panoramas are great to show scale
- A new language + culture + economy + politics adds to the worlds believability
- Giving the enemy their own culture is a great idea too
More tips will come soon... Usually at random when I feel like it
