Book Girl and the Undine Who Bore a Moonflower (Light Novel) - Boy, that title is a mouthful. So Book 6. After the events of Book 5 that wraps up all sorts of angst and drama and pasts and stuff and ... wait, what's this? He thinks Nanase
hates him? Not friendly with anyone? Summer vacation? What the--oh it's a side story that takes place after Book 2 but before Book 3.
welp.
Anyway, it's Maki's backstory time about her family and her own inner turmoil and hatred (because everyone hates something). When we get into japanese authors and books that I know nothing about, I really do appreciate the recaps of their books (and, hell, lives). But it feels like I often miss things by not knowing the books since there's final reveals tied with their endings. Then again, the details here were pretty easy to catch onto regardless of the book involved so it was more seeing why the pieces fell where they did and not so much trying to figure out the pieces. Knowing the full story probably doesn't change anything. I suppose that's sort of been the case for all the books thus far, really.
The story centers on a "cursed past" of Maki's family: A girl drowned. A mansion of corpses. A ghoul cursing the land. It reminds me partially of Higurashi, which I find fitting for the reading today. In all of this is, of course, a story of lovers and the tragedy there. The final reveal feels a bit sudden / info-dumpy and there's some serious "all according to keikaku" going on, though. Doubly so with the use of
Kyoka Suigetsu as a theme behind the mystery. I couldn't remove the Aizen smirk the entire time. It haunted me. I'm not even sure I fully grasp everything revealed, actually.
However, for a side-story that takes place where it does ... there's some really weird things brought up. It leads nicely into Book 7 with all the Tohko flags raised and some mystery of hers but ... it feels weird? Like, there's
a lot of flags raised and that's definitely not there this hard in 3-5. Some other character interactions that make some 3-5 bits different (and/or I should reread in a new light) as well. Honestly, if not for the timing (Summer vacation) and the afterword at the end, I'd probably have just thought it as a proper event after Book 5 really.
All-in-all, it's not a bad entry but it's a bit of a let down coming from the prior book. The mystery itself is bittersweet as hell (once you overlook all the dead bodies) and there's some implications in there that make me wonder if there's stuff in Books 3-5 that this book "introduced." Also, the Book 7 tease at the end can go fuck itself because I really want to sleep and this clearly does not agree with me and my plans.
Yea that first pairing was a doozy lol. The last pairing had some similarities but its effect was way less.
If i had to be critical it would be the MMO story mostly due to the length and not showing his reaction to her being that character (funnily enough there wasn't even an epilogue chapter with those 2). Also in the last story the dude's "running away" was sudden tbh.
Yeah, I went into it thinking they'd all be like Chapter 0. "Forbidden" romances and other unexpected pairings. Instead it was .... basically some normal pairings. And, yeah, the second story drags a bit with the "drama" being pretty meh. Overall, they felt like the weakest characters.
