Genshiken volumes 1-2

So this started not very well. The first chapters are bland, the blank slate otaku MC isn't uninteresting and not really relatable. I didn't know if I was supposed to laugh with the characters, laugh at the characters, or just don't laugh at all. It's near the end of the first volume and onwards when things warm up, as the group dynamics are already established and the author starts doing a few good jokes in some chapters. I liked the super nonchalantly solution to the romance between the couple, an original way to do it instead of dragging it on for several chapters without no end.

In a way I think that ironically, the real protagonist aren't the otakus but Saki Kasukabe. Lots of chapters are seen from her "outsider" perspective and most of the humour comes from the contrast between her and the rest of the crew. And you want to root for her after seeing how hard is having that boyfriend. For example, she put effort in learning a video game to be closer to him and have something in common, but he is autistic as fuck and just destroy her without thinking that maybe he doesn't have to use all his skills against her gf, in her first time playing. Poor Saki-chan!
And she hiding in the mattress and saying she's cosplaying a puyo piece was hilarious.

edit: Kasukabe, not Sasahara!

I guess sasa-yan is a bit of an MC... but he doesn't really become the true focus until a new character is introduced...

The best part of that is the after page;

"He didn't have the heart to tell her that's not what it's called..."

Did you notice how much Saki's design changed just in the first volume?

Poor Saki-chan!
Being Saki is suffering

Well, she did fuck up monumentally. And it's not like she's a jackass, really...

I really couldn't get into the new genshiken. It's just... I dunno. I guess the original series really was about its character dynamics, and I don't really like the new characters much.

The Genshiken look at computers is mystifying. Only otakus buy computers in Japan, and they do it only because the doujinshi (porn) games? it occurs in 2003, at that time computers weren't so weird!
Even knowing that normal pc gaming isn't popular there because consoles and they used mobile for internet since early, it's a bit weird.

I love letting this manga lapse for awhile, and then reread the whole thing just to catch up on what I missed.

I swear that this gag is my favouritest thing ever.

Yup, even if it's to make the scanlations more regluar due to increased popularity. (though roselia scans are doing a great job).

Might be the first current anime in a while that I follow closely.

Genshiken volumes 3-4

Several hijiks continue, the tone is mostly light and comedic in volume 3. In 4, the tone is mostly the same but there are some more serious moments, from one where Saki went full dere and cried, to a little sad and pathetic when they go straight to the point:
she is passing her time with a bf that loves porn games and guys that buys, collects, shares lots of porn. In fact, it's refreshing that they don't beat the bush around and it's honest about it.

A short chubby girl and a tall skinny girl join a swimming club. Alright let's see where this goes, the protagonist is incredibly cute, which helps endure the neverending fat jokes and food jokes.

Mr Childhood Friend doesn't like people looking down on his future waifu

I also like that while the guys don't aggressively deny and hide what they do, they also haven't (for the most part) gone off the deep end and become completely shameless either. Usually a short embarrassed laugh and affirmation

Emeth Meth 01

Stupid golem cockblocking.

I do think the author realises the connection between emeth, meth and golems, but the series doesn't hint towards death of any kind. I suppose the MC wants the golem dead because fuck that cockblocking.

Love in Hell volume 3 [END]

Let's start by saying that I found this short series quite good. Great even.
It manages to stay funny throughout, pull out a cool end and still put in some dark sides to the story (little girl in volume 2, the truth about our dear MC's sin in volume 3) which manage to work quite well with the way the whole story is told.
Talking about the end, it was pretty cool to see Rintaro's action AND what his actions and choices landed him into. Someone might say the end was too good, but me? I think it fits perfectly.
Talking about the art instead, cute and nice looking I think are pretty apt words for it. Koyori is the cutest demon around (and seeing her with her off-duty clothes or that "trust me" face was hnnnnng to the max) and Rintaro manages to show some awesome facial expression changes (he's such a warped fellow, in some ways).

I wish there were other works of this author, because I want more of it.
I also recommend everyone in here give it a chance, as it got a bit of everything (yes, also sex
though not what you'd expect?
) and I found it both a funny and interesting read.

I do remember the end feeling somewhat rushed, but yeah, it's a fun read.

Damn, I'm starting to like white hair girl. It was nice seeing Dio's supposed death had an effect on her, despite her having the cold and competent archetype. And then the teacher transforming into a demon thing forces her to give up the pretense entirely. Good development.

Now if only 51 gets translated soon.

That is one cool mug. I like the gradient on that shirt's line art, but it looks like it'd be hard to tell what's going on when it's glowing in the dark.

when will this end

They sell t-shirts in boxes?

I think they only do that when the shirts aren't being sold in a clothing store. In this case, the store has clothes, but they are on a different floor. It's just so it goes along with all the other JoJo stuff. Now that I think about it, the only shirts I've seen in boxes are anime/manga/game related. They just try to hide the shame with cardboard.

Kingdom 379-380 - Moving into this pretty fast too. I still appear to be a few chapters behind but eh, I'll wait.

Count 01-05

A guy can see the number of lies someone has told in their lifetime. He then meets another guy who has told zero lies. And then they starting doing it like rabbits.

The premise wasn't bad, it was kinda cute.

Does your teacher's name start with an O?

Are you a delinquent who the teacher is trying to win over with manga?
