err black suit is like the safest/most conservative thing you can wear in a corporate/business environment. just don't go black tie.

also what giga said.

this black suit stuff is one of those things that will depend on where you live and where you work. in some circles, wearing a black suit is sartorial treason.

I would say though, if you are wearing black, get something outside of plain worsted wool if possible. A little texture offsets the loss of color depth IMO.

picked up some shoes this month thanks to this thread :D

April haul about $135 for 4 pairs
May one ask where you can buy such shoes that don't look like shit for that price?

Edit: Just checked JCPenneys shipping costs + duty. LOL.

... but I think for a first suit, black would be a bad option. Grey and navy work better with just about every color outside of the greyscale.

This is what I think as well. Something in either charcoal or navy. A black suit can be added later on.

Planning on looking good tonight when I go out for my birthday. Turning 27 on the 27th means...something right? :p

Happy Birthday!

We have the same birthday
I turned 23 today

What is the consensus on Toms shoes? I was thinking about picking up a pair of slip on shoes for the summer, but I don't want to waste my money if they're crap. How is the quality? Are they comfy?

Can't stand that obnoxious branding on the back of the heel. Get that shit outta of here.

RE: Black suits. I hope we're distinguishing the difference between navy and black suits. I'm talking jet black suits, not dark navy that could possibly (and often is) be mistaken for black.

+1 black suit, especially if you can only afford one right now.

Black tie events, formal occasions, weddings, funerals, interviews -- it works for them all. If you think it's too formal, just wear a colored shirt and and a non-black tie.

I wore a black suit to all my interviews post-graduation. After I was hired, the recruiters complimented me on my attire and said too many mid-20 somethings don't suit up.
I think black can look pretty harsh up against colored shirts, hence my point that charcoal and navy work better with just about every color outside of the grey scale. I agree that black suits have many situations in which you can wear them, a lot of which you listed, I just don't think it's the best option for a business setting (or a wedding for that matter, but that's another story).

This is just not true. Charcoal grey is the safest/most conservative/most versatile suit color and always has been.

Eh? Where is this coming from? I work in finance and wear black all the time. Everyone around me wears black suits.
Again, it can be done, sure. My primary point is that grey/navy is going to look better with just about any color combination. I personally feel like black suits are traditionally saved for formal events and/or funerals and therefore look out of place in a business setting.

I bought a pair of apc petit. Sz 30. Idk what my waist is honestly I lost a lot of weight, gained some back, and lost some again. The fit is tight in the thighs, the waist is fine. I've heard apc is slubby. So I hope they don't stretch too much. Ill post pics in a second.

They obviously need a hem too but I do like stacking so ill get it hemmed to a 31 or 32 (I'm short).

What do you guys think? I'm also losing weight nd plan on losing another 8 pounds so ya.

Any alternatives?

They suck.

Why do they suck?

They fit terribly. The sizing is very weird, also.

Hmm...but if you can get the sizing right are they okay?

Can't stand that obnoxious branding on the back of the heel. Get that shit outta of here.

That actually doesn't bother me at all.

Try Sanuks instead.

Those are fugly. :( But thanks for the suggestion!

Casual shoes are difficult. The only good ones are the $300+ ones.

Can't say that I agree. I don't have anything against grey or navy suits (I love grey suits), but I feel that everyone should have at least one black suit because it's so versatile.

Just from my own personal experience working at a financial institution (and being surrounded by other institutions, consulting firms, etc.), people wear black, navy, and grey. They all look fine and no one looks out of place.

just get some slip on vans/pointer/etc. toms look like doo doo for the most part and are a step up from what you find at walmart. if you want something for the beach get a pair of soludos or something.

I'm not sure Toms is even much of a step up from what you'd find at Walmart.

I seem to remember you posting a pair of Tom's in the past that you said you wanted in one of the other threads! Busteeddd! :p

Thanks for the suggestions. Soludos are good then? I was looking at them earlier but they looked cheaper and lower quality than Toms.

I'm not sure Toms is even much of a step up from what you'd find at Walmart.

So they're shitty quality?

you must have me confused for someone else. Some of their laced shoes are ok, but the standard folded slippers are meh city.

soludos aren't super high end but they are a better design, IMO. which at that kind of price point is all that matters, really.

Mea culpa. Wasn't it you who wanted those blue Toms with lobsters on them?

I see your point. They are pretty cheap, so I guess it doesn't matter if they're not super high quality.

Not a fan of espadrilles, personally. Would prefer boat shoes or suede bucks for the summer.

Suede bucks are a good idea!

to expand, there are a lot of others that make funky plaids and so on, too many to list, really. but if you are looking for a slim fit gitman or epaulet new york are hard to beat. I think jkissi (the dude in your photo) used to talk alot on styleforum/etc about taking jcrew and stuff to the tailor and hacking at it. Might be worth a look if you can find some retail stuff cheap. Just make sure it fits in the shoulder, chest, and armhole the way you want; most everything else can be snipped away.

yo speaking of summer what's the word on slutty tees? alucrid give me your best.

acne limit
john elliot + co
there was some silent on yoox iirc
blkdnm t shirt 5
odyn vovk if on sale, curved seam
geller seconds too, but i don't think anything came out this season

i might try and find some deepish hanes though for when the 100 degree weather gets here, also ordered a size up in asos scoops to see if the arm holes work any better there

that's too slutty. I want to project a reserved and haute sluttiness, like a worldly male escort on his day off, not something from the back of a rough trade classified.

Basically. In fact I would argue that, at times, when I wear grey I totally looked out of place:/

I get what you're saying though luckyboyceo. You're looking at it from a purely fashion/looking good point of view, which is fine and kinda right in some respects. But from a pure business/corporate point of view, you're wrong:p

work in finance too so i guess we're bias lol
