Mario Kart 8 Introduces Expanded Item Customization

Listening to Nintendo developers talk about how challenging things that other people nailed down over a decade ago (like item toggles) never fails to amuse and sadden me.

Its even more hilarious when you consider how talented their developers are.

I'd like to hear more detail on exactly what kind of item customization is being offered in MK8, and in what races (eg single or multiplayer, or both). Seems a little pre-emptive to be celebrating the end of blue shells when it's not clear if you can actually play a race with all items minus blue shells.

Too difficult? Then how do other studios manage it?

Other studios that made track editors didn't make a game that looked nearly as good as this one does nor did they have the antigravity gimmick which would probably be impossible to implement as a tool. I mean Modnation and LBPK are great and all but you can't really make anything this polished with them.

User content will never be as polished as developer-created content, but that doesn't mean it's not a worthwhile pursuit, especially in a long-running series like this, and ESPECIALLY when Nintendo has been taking more criticism lately for not changing up their games enough (A Link Between Worlds notwithstanding). Plus, I don't get what graphical fidelity has to do with the inclusion of a track editor?

Hell, in an even broader sense, Nintendo has been having trouble justifying their Gamepad, and this would have been the PERFECT opportunity. It would have made editing a lot easier either through better selection of components for the track or even another vantage point for creating sections (solving the anti-grav thing, which I don't think would have been a problem anyway). Yeah, it might have been hard, but I think it would have been something worth doing. I'll add it to the list of things that is in Smash Bros but not Mario Kart for some reason

They would have to make a set of tools completely different from the ones they used to make the game. It would take a lot of time and effort. Other developers who did this made the track editor the entire game and the official tracks weren't anything special. Assuming that they had the time and resources without hurting development of the official tracks, the track editor would be vastly inferior to the official tracks.

- It's amazingly stupid to allow no items. It's like taking away a good part of Mario Kart's DNA. We'll got the same BS than Smash Bros :/

- Anyway, it takes too long. I always think of Perfect Dark's customization as an exemple. Only Smash Bros come close. And it's pathetic how they talk of it like it's the next big thing.

I love options. Giving me more options as how to play the game is never stupid!

If possible I will make myself a nice little item-selection of only green shells, red shells, fake item boxes, mushrooms, bananas and the boomerang - maybe lightning if it's in the game. Let me limit the player count back to 8 for offline play while we're at it please..

I will finally have my modern mixture of SNES and N64 MK without the Blue Shell!

What! Way to twist words! He never said there was a challange, he just said they put a lot of thought on items for balance.

They should go full-on Bomberman-style customisation. A handy list of what's in and what isn't, as well as other absurd modifiers and handicaps. It'll spice things up significantly. Races where everyone is at boost-speed all the time. Races where whoever is in the top five racers gets mini-mushroomed/lightninged into being tiny. Disabling the forward acceleration button, forcing you to only drive backwards. Possibilities are endless.

Options are cool, I thought it was clear in my post that I only find stupid to allow no items at all - Other item customization is cool of course (and my second point made it clear that I love that).

Taking away items is taking away the crazyness and fun of the game. For people who like only racing, there is the time trial mode. Mario Kart without item will likely be bland and boring, and become another random racer. And seeing Smash Bros, I fear online games will be flooded by no item races and hurt the series appeal. Well, at least this time they can patch it if there is problems.

It was already possible to do no-item races online in Mario Kart 7 (you just have to create a community and select “no item” in the item settings). Guess what, they weren't very popular. I don't think there's much to worry about.

Ever try them???

It sucked all the fun out of the game for me.

I hated "only banana peels" the most though.

Play as Donkey Kong on DK Jungle with Banana Peels only for the optimal racing experience.

Yeah, it totally sucks to give players more options.

...

Anyways, people generally play Mario Kart for the item-based gameplay. If they wanted to play without items, they could easily turn to another racing game. Smash on the other hand doesn't play at all like any other game out there, so you have both people playing it for item gameplay and people playing it for comp play. I highly doubt you'll see much conflict over the issue in Mario Kart 8.

Still an extra option. If you don't like to race with no items, don't choose the no item race.
If it becomes popular it means other people like it - which doesn't really hurt the appeal of the series in any way. SSB Melee is still played 10 years after it came out - because of these options and it did in no way hurt the series.

Just because you don't like one specific mode doesn't mean it shouldn't be an option for anybody else to try.

I don't. I play it for it's great driving mechanics and course designs. Turning to other racing games is not an option, because most racing games are simulations and I abhore simulations for their overly complicated mechanics, low speeds and boring course designs (all imo of course).

I've never understood the hate the blue shell receives. It's not difficult to avoid, yet is a great equalizer for less experienced players.

I'm not really happy with the changes I'm hearing about in MK8, sounds like they've taken a lot of the strategy out of the game. If I wanted a pure racing game, I'd play something else.

The way I see it is that its never an issue on single player, you are either so far ahead its pointless or you need to get better anyway. On multiplayer its too much fun not to use.

It's a great equalizer for other unexperienced players. Doesn't help the guy in the back who actually used it.

And I'm guessing a lot of the hatred comes from that nasty flying version that appeared in a few games.

It does if he uses it correctly.... by which I mean don't use it at all.

I've won quite a few races holding on to the blue shell, and either racing my way to the lead, or watching all the other racers panic and hit their breaks while I zoom by them. And as long as you have the blue shell, no one else will get it.

I hope it is a checklist of all items you can turn off and on at will.

I wonder if they may have other options like timelimits, number of bots etc.

Thank fucking god, finally !!!!

Banana, Mushroom, Feather, Star, Green and Red shells.
(maybe lightning and ghost too in MP, that's fun every once in a while)
They should bring back coin hogging for speed too...
Rest needs to die in a fire !

lol considering half of every MK's courses are just rehashes. It's obviously just about the money.

The use of rehash regarding Nintendo games have become a rehash on its own.

Farewell Blue Shell, you will not be missed.

While I say good riddance I shall always remember you by looking at the Blue Shell statue thing that is coming with my CE of the game lol.

A less experienced player who uses it against a good player gains nothing from it. A less experienced player who is in first place has no chance to avoid it coming from an experienced player who will probably close the gap pretty fast.

I think the solution then, is for those less experienced players to get better at Mario Kart, and not complain about the blue shell! ;-)

Some of my favorite MK7 memories involve the blue shell. Now ink? There is an item I'd like to get rid of.

Not happening and for good reason, single player has to be normalized, not customizable.

Considering the star ratings they give to you after a race, blue shells and similar randomisers are absolutely not fine in singleplayer. If they want to have it uniformly (why would the need to? You can have options in singleplayer, too...), they should just turn off the blue shell in singleplayer per default.
