Mario Kart 8 Introduces Expanded Item Customization

I have zero friends with a Wii U so I will be.

It'll probably be to unlock stuff, practice races, etc.

At any rate, no one with a WiiU should be stuck with AI only unless they have some aversion to online play, or cant connect online.

Only Nintendo can generate this much interest in a customize option for a versus match, something other videogames have had for decades.

I wish they implemented a defense move instead of turning items off. The shield in Modnation for instance. To me that is preferable over turning off blue shells.

As much as I hate getting hit by blue shells, them being in the game makes me always want to have a giant lead so that when I do get hit by one it doesn't totally mess me up. So yeah I'll keep it on.

Funny how in smash I'm a items off, 3/4 stock player and people are always like that sucks the fun out the game, here I am defending blue shells and saying play with all items in MK lol.

Only Blue Shell item will certainly make it worth a try at least....
Kinda like the smashball only option of Brawl....

Only Nintendo can generate this much interest in a customize option for a versus match, something other videogames have had for decades.

Considering item customization is not anything new to Mario Kart, this kind of post read like driveby trolls more than anything....

So this was complete bullshit. Today we learned the system is identical to MK7 (options= All Items, Shells Only, Bananas Only, Mushrooms Only, Bob-ombs Only, No Items); only thing new is that Frantic Mode (which was already in MKWii) can now be selected online.

Talk about """ expanded """ item customization. Very disappointed.

Yeah, I knew this was coming when they pussyfooted around the question in an earlier interview. It's disappointing. I don't know why they don't want to give us the option to pick items we don't want, it's kind of silly.

Based on the last direct, the balance sounds far better now. Better items when in the lead and the ability to destroy the blue shell.

Problem is that in recent Mario Karts (or: every MK after SMK) tracks are so easy to navigate that the leading racer will never get caught unless something like blue shell appears. It's the same old topic of making games balanced for everyone, etc. which has been Nintendo's main concern especially in the Wii era.

If it's anything like Smash Brothers with no items, it'd be a boring husk of a once-fun game. To each his or her own, but I've never understood the need to suck all of the fun out of these games.

You are basically saying the fundamentals of Smash (movement, attacks, character vs. character interaction) are crappy and it needs a bunch of flashy random events to cover up for it.

you have the horn to blast away blue shells now too, so even in you can remove the blue shell only that makes it a bit less dramatic for this game than we all think right now, doesn't it?

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but I don't see why they can't just make it identical to Smash Bros' item selection system. Have an on/off toggle for each item, that way everyone can play exactly with what they want or don't want.

Listening to Nintendo developers talk about how challenging things that other people nailed down over a decade ago (like item toggles) never fails to amuse and sadden me.

I agree on the topic of item toggles but a course creator? Easy?

He doesn't even say the actual feature would be tough to implement on a base level. He says it would be tough to make it feel rewarding. Which totally makes sense - have you ever played a user-created stage in Smash Bros Brawl? It's not worth the effort if you don't put in a huge amount of customization options...props to scatter around, etc. Mario Kart 8 looks like it has some of the best tracks the series has ever seen. There's no point putting in a course creator that will create tracks no one would want to use. It would have to create a worthwhile track, and I think that creating such an option probably does take a lot of time.

I don't get what's so amusing and saddening about holding off on a feature until it's strong enough to be a worthwhile addition. Unless you skipped that whole interview and just think "lol they're lazy"

So we know if the preview version was the release version of the game? I'm more positive about another selection of options making their way in than battle arenas...

I'd be happy with an extra 'basic' option, that enables bananas, shells, the star and mushrooms. I don't think the extra sets as of now make sense besides trying them once or twice. Pure chaos or too limited instead of offering a different play style..
