Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

They took a chance with these new tracks for battle mode and they apparently suck so I think Nintendo owes us free DLC of proper DLC arenas.

That would be sweet, but something tells me that isn't going to happen. Does Nintendo even do DLC? I don't play many Nintendo games, but I don't recall ever seeing DLC advertised for a Nintendo game.

As a guardian of an 8 year old who will be playing the hell out of this in my living room, I'm totally fine with the lack of voice chat, its appreciated actually. Don't most people just talk trash in racing games? Racing games kinda brings it out in people.

Let me rephrase that: Characters or cups we don't know about yet. I'm also not complaining about the content, I think we have lots of it and a complete package. The only thing that irks me is the battle mode and I think it would be a good idea to bring that back later as DLC with new characters that are missing atm and maybe a new retro and a completely new cup.

Personally, if they bring DLC into this I hope it's purely characters and battle modes. I think 32 tracks online is the perfect balance for having a lot of variety in every play session, but never going too long without seeing any one track. That way I still get to play them all, my favorites are guaranteed, but I never get burnt out on anything. If they add too many this balance may be thrown off.

Plus, if they give us ever more retro courses than they're limiting our excitement for them in the next game, and I doubt that's something they want to do.

But that's just me.

Nintendo has released DLC for Pikman 3, so it could be a matter of them inching into adopting it more often since then.

I think that's the Nintendo paradox right now, especially on the Wii U. Nintendo makes excellent quality games that most people don't care enough about to buy their system, probably because they've already played them.

I am thinking...
1) People are oblivious that Wii U is a new console and not a controller for the Wii
2) Not enough of a library in order to upgrade due to lack of 3rd party ports
3) For 100 more, you get a PS4 or a Xbox One

Pretty much 2 and 3 were Gamecube issues and 1 is poor marketing.

They do! They even have a season pass for the new Mario Golf, and Fire Emblem and Pikmin 3 had extensive DLC as well.

After watching this, would you prefer a prettier MK8 or 60fps?
People are way too obsessed with "pretty." Games like 3D World, Tropical Freeze, and MK8 are all gorgeous in their own ways, but also don't push the visuals too far as to sacrifice 60fps. 3-4 player split-screen aside.

Honestly, Nintendo "gets it." You can have a nice, refined and polished look with some great effects without sacrificing performance. It's just that there's so much emphasis on "teh pretties" in gaming that people are willing to take the framerate hit even if it's a general detriment to playability and fluidity.

Mount Wario is something else, man. I love downhill courses, especially the latter portion of DK Mountain in Double Dash.

Great episode of Doctor Who btw, definitely one of my favourites

I think MK8 has some of the strongest new tracks in the serie: Mount Wario, MK Stadium, Sunshine Airport, Electrodome and more, they all look like pure fun. Sure the HD spectacle adds a lot, but there's some really serious top notch design there. I cannot wait any longer

It is a shame that Battle Mode is not looking great but I honestly haven't enjoyed that mode at all in the recent Mario Kart games. I think it was at its best when it was 2-4 players and you had to be far more tactical with your use of items.

Nintendo has been doing DLC for a while now. Animal Crossing periodically offers free new furniture, Fire Emblem had a load of new maps and characters, New Super Mario Bros 2 had new levels, Pikmin 3 has some fantastic new stages, New Super Luigi U was an entirely new game sold as DLC for New Super Mario Bros U, Mario Golf has 6 courses and 4 characters... Yea. Nintendo like DLC when it fits. :)

This game is hot! This game is bought!

Wii-U just needs a killer new Zelda Entry and a new Metroid game and I'm done. The magic of Nintendo's First Party efforts never stops amazing.

I was never the biggest battle mode fan before, but it seems I'm the only one who thinks it being on actual stages is a lot better than on separate arenas.
according to andre from gamexplain the battle mode is actually alot of fun.

It will be almost June, so probably it was picked in order to have a steady release schedule after it, with next game coming probably at the beginning of July and at list 1 per month after that.

Children also get out of school at the end of the month...well at least my son does. He wants the game.

They just did DLC for Mario Golf, so anything is possible. Maybe there will be DLC battle modes, who knows?

I have always been a bread and butter Mario Kart fan -- battle mode was just a fun distraction from the main game, never the focus. So it doesn't really bother me that much that it was gimped. The 32 tracks look spectacular, shaping up to be the best in the entire series. I can't wait to
fly down the waterfall in Shy Guy falls.

That Wired article is embarrassing. Almost as much as when the same writer called Mario Kart 8 "vaporware" a little over a year ago.

Again. I played all with the same Mii build as last time!

I'm working on my review currently, but it's going to have a similar score to these in the thread. Absolutely love the game. I loved Double Dash though, and it seems like many didn't.

Whoa, what the hell? This sounds like a guy who hates the regular racing mode because he sucks at it or something. MK has never been about battle mode and it's never been it's "best feature". People who believe this have either only ever played MK64 or don't like racing games.

I can't read any of these while at work so I have a few questions.

- What is wrong with Battle Mode? I get that it doesnt have arenas but what is wrong with that exactly? I see a lot of you discussing it.

- I have heard a few people comment on the lack of content. How many tracks are there? What are they referring to?

- A few have mentioned the unlockables and how the game "wont last long". Is this true?

Gimme pretty, 30fps plays just fine.

MK8 is pretty either way though so it's all good. :)

Pikmin 3 had some dlc maps

Fire emblem had quite a few dlc maps

Mario golf has tons of courses and a few characters

I havent seen any video from this game since its reveal trailer years back so I cant wait to play it. I was going to get it regardless but man these reviews are making me so impatient. Trying my best to not watch any of these videos so I can enjoy the new tracks spoiler free.

60fps...Gat damn Nintendo.

I reviewed it, so I can answer your questions directly.

- Battle Mode drops the specific arena-style course and instead takes place on the flatter racing tracks. They don't work as well.

- 32 tracks seems fine to me. There's some tracks I wish they had brought back and I wish they had played with the basic formula more (like Mount Wario), but it works and there's mirror mode as well.

- Depends. 32 tracks, 30 characters, and a bunch of kart bits to unlock. You could get tired in a weekend if you're playing casually, as it doesn't take long to unlock everything, but MK fans will find a lot to enjoy here.

You are a stronger man than I.

Interesting thanks for the reply. 32 tracks seems like a ton.

...you crazy. CRAZY. MK64 battle mode was the gift of the Gods. Block Fort with friends was synonymous with frenzied chases, sharp turns, bananas treacherous dumps and runs to the corners when the red shells were coming. and that Star...I felt like Godzilla on a kart when I had it.

Just imagine... MK battle mode with destructable environments... Bob-ombs only

I just watched the Gamespot review, and did he seriously complain about having too many options in kart customization? I was under the impression that a lot of customization options were always a good thing.

The rest of the review was fine, but that part really stuck out to me.

Man, you gotta hand it to Nintendo. No matter how bad their sales can get, they NEVER disappoint in terms of quality. Even at their worst (Super Mario Sunshine comes to mind) they make some of the best video games in the world, to this day. Sure, sometimes they can be a bit behind the times, but they don't deserve the lashing, bashing, and thrashing they've been receiving recently.

Just look at some of their recent games:

Pikmin 3
Super Mario 3D World
Link Between Worlds
DKC Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 8

I mean, the quality of these games is absolutely astounding, and the general consensus is that critics AND fans are both on the same page regarding that.

TLDR; I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT TO PLAY THIS GAME.
