Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

I was never the biggest battle mode fan before, but it seems I'm the only one who thinks it being on actual stages is a lot better than on separate arenas.

Fuck that.

Take one of the cube, speherical or irregular elongated shaped planetoids in Super Mario Galaxy and you are hidden by the curvature of the surface. Battle mode takes place in antigravity mode on the surface of them.

Hell, a toroidal planetoid with some internal tunnels as well as an outer shell would be awesome too.

ie battle mode on the surface of something like that

Or imagine the "fort" map in MK64 but instead of the normal map it's inside a big sphere. Could be cool. I'm pretty sure Nintendo will release some DLC maps for Battle Mode.

Nice thinking. Hopefull they will release dlc for battle mode.
I'm sure that there was no time to implement that.

The only item which i miss is the feather. Would be nice to avoid attacks.

Man, shame about battle mode being nerfed. Double Dash was sooooo good there and Mario Kart DS too, but since then it's been ehhhh. Oh well, I'm still more a fan of the Cups and those look spectacular.

The battle mode being put into the courses themselves is a terrible decision. That will just have people racing around flying past in opposite directions on repeat. All battles will feel the same and encounters will be less frequent

Seriously, this is going to be one of the best deals ever. You get a critically acclaimed game with great online and local multiplayer and a free game. Just wow.

Jesus at that 7.5 NWR review. I don't care that he scored the game low-ish, but the review itself is abysmally written.

Jeez, I know what you mean - 'the heart of the multiplayer is Battle Mode'? Since when was a Mario Kart's multiplayer centred around Battle Mode?

My only issue with the multiplayer lies within the two-player option as the screen is now split vertically and this is not something I am too familiar with. There are no options to change it and you can't each have your own screen with the television and Wii U GamePad. Instead, if you go to the off-TV Play option, there is a splitscreen on there as well and that is quite silly. If you playing alone, it is worthwhile option, but they could have done so much more with the controller.

He goes from talking about vertical split-screen multiplayer and not being familiar with it, to not being able to have your own screen with the TV and Gamepad (a legitimate complaint), to playing alone? Why would you have split-screen on the Gamepad if you were playing alone? Baffling.

That said, 6 retro courses and 2 modern courses for Battle Mode is disappointing, hopefully Nintendo'll correct that with DLC later.

Do all these reviews cover the netcode and / or quality of the multiplayer experience?

I think Mario Kart 8 has reviewed as well as everyone expected.

That's exactly what it's like. Also makes it hard for very young players who're getting to grips with the controls.

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding it but the IGN review makes it seem like there's no way to play with a friend in a public lobby. Is that really the case?

A bit disappointing if so because I was looking forward to playing in public lobbies with my brother.

2 players local can play online together.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I meant online, not locally. We don't live nearby each other anymore and have separate Wii U's. Wording of the IGN reviews makes it seem like we can't invite each other to a public lobby but that seems kind of strange if so.

What? Say it ain't so.

Oh then I think you can join friends from your Friends List in the Wii U OS.

I HAVE to read the NWR review. At least Neal didn't write it. I'd have to hurt him.

I hope you see this post ;)

Shows how confident Nintendo are with the quality of their product lifting the review embargo this early. Great scores all around but not that it matters anyways, this was a day one purchase no matter what for me.

I'm actually surprised reviews are turning out this well! Don't know why, maybe it's my own personal bias toward Mario Kart games. Regardless, I'm there day one. Already have it preordered.

GameRevolution: 5/5

Nintendo continues to impress me with a knowing awareness of what needs to be fixed in their games. Seemingly minor fixes help to make Mario Kart 8 the most playable and balanced racing game I’ve ever laid thumbs on. For example, you will never wonder what item the racer ahead or behind you is carrying as everyone holds their item while they race. You can only hold one item, so you can no longer drag a shell or banana behind you to defend against incoming red shells.

I’ve played enough Mario Kart in my life to know that this is the best version of the venerable kart-racer since the Nintendo 64 era.

Mario Kart 8 + June OS update = satisfaction :)

That Simon Parkin review is on another level entirely. Beautifully written.

Also, I didn't even know Battle Mode was a main attraction for some people. Strikes me as similar to showing up for Spelunky for the deathmatch.

Also when will the eshop version be available to purchase?I bought the snes Mariokart so that i would get the discount on the eshop version of 8.

My Italian review is up if you want to check it out, it's a solid 9,2

I think I "know my Mario Kart" and this is really the best one since MK DS and probably the most balanced. Too bad for the absence of any new interesting mode and the worst battle ever!
I'm glad to hear this. Mario Kart DS is my favourite in the series but I also know it had certain balance issues (mostly due to the karts not all accommodating snaking). Mario Kart Wii had poor item balancing, but then Mario Kart 7 improved things quite a bit, so I'm glad to hear Mario Kart 8 is potentially even more balanced.
